Does anyone have any ideas, or has anyone used a material other than metal for a pair of sliding reel seat rings? Its for an 8' 3wt Im working on. Wanted to make something custom instead of metal. Re: Fly Rod Reel Seat Rings?

Thin wall plastic tube is possible. Anything that has a little give or stretch to it should work.

Suppliers also carry the graphite rings. They can also be painted Bill - willierods.com Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/10/2010 07:39AM by bill boettcher. Re: Fly Rod Reel Seat Rings?

I have some graphite rings, and aluminum rings I purchased from Jann's Netcraft. I like them both. The graphinte have no give to them. But being on cork, which DOES have give to it, I think they would work just fine. However I have a Pfleuger Trion and the graphite ring does not completely go on it and set all that well, while the aluminium one, which has some flex in it, fits for the Trion nicely.
I purchased a wooden reel seat one time while traveling. It came with PLASTIC rings. Now this is what you definitely do not want. The groove in the wooden insert of the reel seat was not an exact fit for the foot of my reel. It has excess space on both sides of the reel foot. The plastic rings had give, the wooden seat was solid and had NO give or flex in it. The reel would keep falling off every time I tried to fish, within 3 strokes. I had to tooth pick it, and tape it and such. So, flexible plastic rings on solid material does not work....at all. Just Fyi I prefer cork grips with slip rings as opposed to standard reel seats. So.....if you create something new....I would love to hear about it. Jim Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
