Perhaps I have realized my mistake. Because the 9' rod's reel seat and grip = exactly one foot......and that portion is held flat and flush against my cd bookcase top.....I did not use 108" for my calculations. I figured I am only flexing the section of the shaft between the cork grip and the tip of the rod. Therefore I used 96" to make my measurements and deflect the rod. Was I sup

I thank you for your help. I am not questioning the numbers of CCS. I am questioning my testing methods because the conclusions I reach are so far removed from what I would expect. Therefore I question if I am doing thing correctly.....I am I making some mistake that I can't seem to figure out. I am perplexed and the spread between my use of CCS, the results.....compared to stated information. Pr

Then the CCS system has absolutely no value to me at all! It appears from your answer that any rod can cast any line and there is no such thing as an action that relates to flex......I wasted my time? The material I read states a moderate rod has an action angle of 59-63 degrees. You statement says there is no such thing. The material I read said 32 pennies equates to an ERN of 3.72, that ER

Hello. I just did CCS testing on two rods. Thought I knew what I was doing. A custom rod marked 5wt came out to be a 3.72 ERN or a 3wt with an AA of 60 which makes it a slow to moderate 3wt. It took 32 pennies to deflect it. THEN comes the doubt. For comparison I CCS'd an Orvis TLS Power Matrix....9' Tip Flex (9.5) 6wt. My test came out to ERN of 4.6 making it almost dead on a 4wt rod! Took

I saw a feather on a rod. Fellow told me how he did it. I have not done any decals so I am no person to consult. However I know what what he said as to how he did it. He stated he used CP to place the feather on the rod. When it dried he covered it with a polyurethane. It looked splendid. Just fyi you guy all know all that stuff

I have the same issue. I have a 10' 5wt which is no longer 10' . Went fishing with a friend. Parked about 300' from waters edge. I keep my rods in cheap plastic gun cases with foam liners. I took my rod out and assembled it and set it aside. The friends wife thought she was doing good......she.... unbeknownst to me took one hand and grabbed up several rods and walked them to the lake with some

Here's a link to the Grizzly Hobby lathe being talked about. They used to sell it at a higher price with the drill. Seems they only sell it as a lathe now...and you have to find/buy a drill for it. But it is the lathe being referred to. Just fyi

Lots of good info. Only one way to find out for sure..... I actually have been considering this thought for about 3 years....for a "single" hand fly rod. Just not that much of a craftsman. So haven't thoughjt about the best way to build one for trial. I don't think the line is going to wrap....on a single hand rod anyway. The load on the tip should controal where the rod axis i

I have an original Grizzly Hobby Lathe I "might" part with. Never used except to turn on the drill to ensure it works. New and sitting......I don't really know in my mind if I want to part with it. So I guess I shouldn't be saying so. But I do have another lathe, also unused that is a China lathe. Much bigger and originally a 40" bed. But wouldn't take American accessories. A frie

I am sure I have seen them either on Mudhole or Jann's Netcraft. Sorry I haven't taken the time to research it for you...but have seen themonline. I personally do not like metal reel seats. I know the reel on the very end of the rod is a sweet feel. But I like 10-12" TN handles with slip rings. I can slide the reel forward or aft....and get balance with a reel if it is not too far off. Thank you Tom. Excellent explanation. I actually have considered guides that rotate. Just haven't quite figured out how to build it yet. I think it would be an interesting project. The final product might be what I was seeking....or might be laughable. I desire to build a grip of a TN handle with slip rings. Perhaps a 12" grip. But somehow mount the grip on bearings...so the the grip

I don't know as much as you guys. But I can still have an opinion. I do not believe a rod is going to fail because the guides were put on some wrong axis of the blank. I have never had a rod fail just fishing for the species that I want to with that particular rod. I think failures come from damage to the rod, nicks, hits with a beadhead fly, etc. Some defect introduced into the rod. As a fly rod

I have a 13' fly rod blank I intend to build it into a two hander some day. Meanwhile, my favorite steam opens up in a couple of days. I would like to mount some temporary guides on this blank to go fishing, sorta Tenkara Style....or dappling if you will. But later on I want to take these guides off and build the rod. I am going to use cork tape, or waterproof medical tape for a temporar

Thank you Tom. Disappointed in only getting one comment. Thought more people were willing to share knowledge about CCS sys. uh.....I am of a mind that the CCS system is NOT going to help me find a rod I like. Because.....I would get the specs on a 3/4 wt rod that I am overlining. .Sooooo.....how would one ake THAT data.....and apply it to a blank selection......and say build a 6wt.....that wo

What a wonderful website. So much valuable information provided by Tom, Dr. H....and members. Example - thread requesting building on a blank for sinko's or something. What great info provided. No guessing, or running you fingers through the yellow pages..but actual advise from people who already have used and have experience with the question asked....and precise blanks suggested to use! I have been interested in glow in the dark material as well. I had an earlier thread about it.. Did not get all the above info so this is a really good thread. As far as recharging.....I have heard that some people carry a flash camera with them. Taike one photo on flash and it's recharged for awhile. I hadn't found what I was looking for. So I was toying with a the idea of a hollow glass bla

Thanks to both Johns and Tom. I have some free cork tape coming in the mail. Will check it out. Great point on the reel seat being inletted. Number of guides to remove...? 2 piece rod out in the camper. I go take a look at the reel seat and guides. John gracious enough to send me some cork tape to play with. I'm quite a rookie who has read a lot more than he has done. So, short on practical exper

Thanks Tom but it's a fly rod. I suppose I could remove the grip and splice on a new one. I just thought cork tape would be easier. But I live in a small town far from a metro area. I have never laid eyes on the cork tape. Thanks Tom for reading my question and answering.

I just obtained a rod I love. But I am not happy with the grip. It is a cigar cork grip I think. You know....tapers down to the rod on the rod end of the grip. It is not only a shape I do not like.....it is undersized. It must have been built for a pretty small handed person, as I do not have large hands by any means. My friend cast it and it was small enough to make his hand hurt. He didn't w

My local small town Ace Hardware has "O" rings. I purchased a larger ring with a smaller diameter O ring from them for a different purpose. I cannot say for sure they have the O rings you want because I only looked for what I wanted. They seemed to have a good selection of O rings though.

I "think" he means do not brush it and brush it and brush it around the rod. I believe the correct way is to hold the brush on the rod thread wrap....and turn the rod.....slowly pushing the epoxy forward as the brush is being held down on the thread. I am quite the rookie so this may not be what he meant. My understanding is that it is the way to apply the expoxy.

Wow. That's the effect I would prefer over just glowing threads. Was wondering how I could get the whole rod to glow like that. That's why I asked about glow matereial. Didn't know about the glow paints and such. But thanks to the posts here sure do now. Seems like my 7'-8" CHARTREUSE GREEN 3pc 5wt blank would be perfect for this effect. BTW you can still get this blank off @#$%& for the $8+

Mr. Spence, and others. I understand all the comments and basically agree with them. I have been so annoyed at how the post office treats the triangle tube boxes and I have pictures. My local post office will just paste a sticker on it saying "arrived damaged" and that's the end of it. I have the pictures and they are crimped at the same spot...which I find kind of interesting.

How about a translucent fiberglass with a fiber optic ....optic fiber in the center of the core or even mounted on top of the rod....fiber optic carries light??? uh.....I was not planning on using a black blank. Got a cheapo 7'-8" 3pc 5wt medium action "chartreuse" blank off @#$%& for $8 and change...... But I do appreciate all the information above. Very helpful. Thank you f

I know I will get shot and slaughtered for this one. But....truth is in the perception. I ordered one blank from Mudhole. Never again. It came in an approximately 4" square cardboad box. Cheap flimsy cardboard as well. Just a bit of paper stuffed in it. With "VERY" little pressure of just picking up the box with your hand.....the box collapses and turns flat! How much abuse did tha

If one was to put the guides on a fly rod with glow in the dark thread at Wally World how well would it work in the night? For night fishing from a pontoon or whatever....do you think it will work to any beneficial degree? How long will it last before it needs to be "re-treated" with a strong flashlight to get the glow back? Or another way....how long does the glow last? Can it be t

Would a 16' telescoping crappie rod work for Tenkara fising? You can still put a reel on it. Only $16.95.
