I vote for USPS but only if you use a tube. I have pictures of two triangle boxes that have been smasned as if stood on end and heavy stuff sat on them. Box actual open at a point in the crinkle as a slit across the box. This was mentioned above in a shipment with a triangular box. But if in a tube I go with USPS. I have big probs with UPS and won't use them. Won't bore you with the long story bu

I got it. Thanks Tom. I was just wondering with the longer rod and the action of spey, if the heavier load with longer line....if the spine would indeed have a torque problem. Sounds like much ado about nothing....just as in single handed rods. Thanks again.

I am one who does not worry about the spine on single hand fly rods. However up into the long spey rods I am not so sure. The actions they go through perhaps the spine is very important. How in the world would spine.....well....actually how would you place the guides on each section of the rod in relation to the spine? It could be so different thoughout the whole casting process. How do you spine

You would not have to necessairly have to have a pink winding check. However there are many ways to create a winding check. You don't have to just buy one. Find a ball point pen in pink, or maybe in the color that matches the thread wraps, cut it to fit, polish it and there you go. I want to relate our story as my wife didn't make it through the breast cancer after a four year battle. This is

Agree with Mr. Kepka. CA not bonding hard plastics. That is for sure true. I found that out by using it multiple times and having failures. I had a mindset that super glue would bond anything. Nope. For sure not hard plastics. For solid hard plastic I have better success with plain old pvc pipe glue.

Oh don'tthink I never use the sponsors. I do. I look to them first. I have several Batson blanks in RX6,7,and 8. I have a Tiger Eye, a Beulah, and I don't remember what else. I just looked and I have purchased at the very least from ten of the vendors at the left. So don't think I don't favor the sponsors because I do. It's just the first blank I decided to build on the butt diameter was sooooo

Well, a shot in the dark. I have some "Liquid Stitch" from Wal-Mart I am going to try on a knot. I like UV Knot Sense but it is not at HD. Also with UV Knot Sense if you are tying a knot at home after dark....it is not going to dry unless you have a UV flashlight. Heat nor any other light will NOT dry it. Gotta be UV rays from the sun or a UV flashlight. I got one....from Umpqua I think

I have not had a very easy past few years. I say that to explain why I haven't built any rods but keep talking and asking about them. A lot of things got...and still get in my way. I still want to though. I bought several cheap blanks when I first learned it could be done. So I have plenty to learn on. But they are all cheap. My friends 5/16" rat tail file on a lathe was not even big enough

Where do you get those great lightweight blanks that I sometimes come across but don't know where to buy? I saw a couple of rods a few weeks ago in Sportsmans Warehouse. A 3/4 and a 4/5 wt for only $37 each. Wish I had bought one of each. Light as a toothpick and already built! For that price.....a bargain. Where in the heck can I buy such a light blank to build rods on?

I use furled leaders and therefore have absolutely no need for the nail knot. So I do not use any knots that require a tool. For the line to leader connection I use the Castwell knot from FAOL. It is not very pretty....but it will hold.....I can probably tie it in les than 15 seconds..... and can tie it in the dark. I sometimes coat it with something. But have been thinking about trying to cover

I really like the Story Pole technique and am really glad it appeared in the Rodmaker Magazine. I did notice in picture #6 he ended up with the 7 guides plus a tip top as he intended. I just needed a little help with it. And yes Bob, you have perceived it correctly. My arms are a little short with sorta broad shoulders. According to the golf pro measurements my arms are 1/2" shorter tha

Tom, By jove "I think I've got it" BTW the Sage reference is still correct. I was not using the Sage to compare spacing of the guides. It was a quick way to measure the distance on an existing rod.....from the butt to the furthest end of the grip (which would include the reel seat). On this rod It is 3.5" of reel seat and 6.5" of cork grip. I was simply considering tha

Just received Rodmaker Magazine. Article does not make sense to me. Measuring from the first butt guide to the tip top of a 6' rod is only 25"?.. I got out my Sage 3wt and measured from the butt of the rod up to the end of the cork grip and got 10". I like my first butt guide 14" above the cork grip so I am at exackery 24" to my first butt guide. On a six foot rod that would l

Ok. Dummy here. I use dental floss....with nothing attached to it. So......think about a dental floss with a loop on one end. That's all I know. What's with the beads and swivels? I don't understand how they can be on the dental floss or thread when you want to feed it through........maybe I am getting the idea. You don't have to feed it I guess......I guess you WRAP the thread over the floss. Th

On a fly rod put it straight down as Tom said. Period. There is no other better place. On top or sides you line will loop over it. Totally true. Straight down......The line comes off the bottom of the fly reel. The hook keeper on the bottom of the rod just in front of the grip is not going to get in the way of anything. It is no where near where the line is coming off the reel. Put a temporary gu

Tom, Thank you. I know I read the issue. But must have not noticed what you pointed out. Thank you for assuring me it will work and the difference between types of ring material. That is all the information I needed. Mucho thanks. Not that it would be the end of the world if I just tried....and messed one up. But asking is more fun. Also thanks for pointing me toward the article. I wil

I would like to build a foam grip TN handle style. I would like to make a 10 or 12" with a sleeve. I haven't made a foam grip yet. Will slip rings hold and be effective on a grip covered with a sleeve and coated? If it will work.....then.....how would you suggest getting the slip rings on?

Walt, Thanks for the reply. I already had those questions in my mind. Bear in mind I am not experienced at this. I myself have wondered if I would want to balance a rod with a reel.....empty, or a reel with line on it, or a reel with line with line hanging out the end of the rod....or.....since most false casting or final casting is something longer than 25' in general.....would one be spending

Tom, That was exactly my point. I don't think most people count the footage on their reels. Maybe for bream they buy a small reel, fill it with backing and line and go fish. (not even knowing how much backing they have used up) Arbor DOES have a lot to do with it. That is my whole, well, part of my point. I can still fish for bream with that reel, but I feel ridicoulous with it. 485' of line t

I know....this is a rod BUILDING site. Should be a lot of knowledge out there though about my subject. My wife passed last year, and a bit too early after the funeral I had a chance to go sit on a lake for six months out of state. Friends encourage me to get away for awhile. In that process I purchased a lot of rods and reels off the internet. Think subconciously it was a way of coping. Problem

I would also say go with the dream reamers. Just becasue I have read a lot about them. Just don't have the bucks right now...so $7 tape and some old rod sections will do the trick just fine. However, again....'tis for hand reaming. I don't do any power reaming. Either way the dream reamers are the best. What I posted was...well.....second best maybe. But definitely economical.

It's late. I'm brain dead. But....too late to look up the guides n a catalog but I do not think you can use the same size wire snake guides as single foot ceramics. For example if you order a number 6 wire snake guide and a number 6 ceramic single foot guide they will not have the same size hole....or opening if you measure them.....I think. Anyway I built a 9' 2pc 4wt. Used Fuji Alconite black s

I am not as knowledgeable as the other guys here. I think Rainshadow means a fly rod blank. Not sure if they use that name in both spinning an fly rods. But....from what you stated you want a small package rod. You could get an 8" straight cork handle with slip rings from Jann's Netcraft. With slip rings you could either mount a fly reel on it and fish, or a spinning rod that mounts on botto

Calvin, thanks for the question. Thank all for answers. And Eric thank you very much for such an emotive explanation. What a great post to explain the process so well. I really like that. Sorta like....here's the material list....go make a fly. Then there are the Step by Step instructions on how to make a fly. Eric, you did such a good job it helps me and probably others tremendously. Thank you Mike for taking the time and the help. I will follow up. I figured it would not be as easy as just ordering the parts you listed. Yes, great parts list and I needed that. Now I just have to find out how to fit them to my machine. Hopefully I won't have to bother you as I sense you are a pretty busy person. I think I want to learn how to do marbling also. I'll check out my lathe. The ro

I have a new lathe also. Do not know how to equip it Mike. It is a cheapo bought new from a flea market. It has 4 speeds (up to 3,000 plus)and seems to run fine. It is a 40" lathe. I have to take the cover off and change some belt to change speeds. According to the manual. Haven't had the cover off yet to see it. But I purchased a router speed control from Harbor Freight. It has a low, mediu

Well, if you are talking about power reaming with a lathe, or drill or something....I don't know. I do not know the answer to your heat question. As far as using it by hand it worked quite well. I had no problem. I say had....because I don't have them....have purchased the tape and have plenty of junk rod pieces to use to make the reamers. I purchased the step tape because a friend made his that

Buy the 3m RV steps adhesive which is self sticking. Cut into strips and spiral wrap around an old rod section to look just like the one explained in the library. No epoxy needed. Just wrap it on and you're done. Do about 3 different sizes. Jim
