CORK BORING

Gidday Guys,

Thought I would approach the wealth of information contained in this forum again as it works every time.

I am wanting to bore some cork out to 20mm dia ID from 1/4 & 3/8 ID tubes I have.

What is the best way to do it? I need it to be very accurate so I don't particularly want to use a reamer .

Cheers
Chris

Center boring on a lathe is exceptionally accurate. Or, you can fashion a cork boring clamp such as that shown on the photo page in the last couple days. This was something of my own design that we featured in RodMaker just about a decade ago now.

The other possible method would be to glue up the rings on a mandrel, let dry, pull the mandrel and then drill with a pilot drilling bit such as those offered by Flex Coat.

The 5/8" Flex Coat pilot bit will get you close, you could then ream to your desired ID without risking to much slop. They also have special order bits you might want to consider

I may take a lot of flack for this. I use a regular drill bit, but I run it in reverse. It seems to give me more control, doesn't dig in , and I can bore it to any size necessary. Its slow, but it works.
