I've read many threads on this topic before trying to paint my first blank. I went to the store and bought automotive spray paint and clear coat. It has dried for about a week, but when I apply permagloss the paint smears and looks terrible. What is the best way to do this?
Thanks, Brant Re: Painting Blanks

Permagloss has a VERY hot solvent and may not work with some paints. I always test a paint/clearcoat on a piece of scrap blank first. Some automotive paints also require a heat cure to set properly and that may not be a good idea with most blanks.

Would duragloss work instead of permagloss? Or is different paint the better answer?

You should never put a 2 part anything over single pac paint, single pac air dry paints are chemically weak and will re-wet easily. Even if it did not smear it would "fry" the paint underneath causing it to stay cheesy under a hard crust. Can you tint the permagloss to the colour you want? or try spraying with a 2 part polyurethane paint. Cheers Paul. Re: Painting Blanks

Brant...
I have painted numerous rod blanks over the years but have never used permagloss...only flex coat...never a problem. Usually I only clear coat over the paint [Merricks Tackle has a spray can epoxy rod finish that is great] A little hint...when using flex coat use your finger as a squeegee and the finish will look good and no build-up of finish.
