I see that Grizzly has four new small mini lathes listed. The least expensive one is a 10x18 that looks IDENTICAL to the JET mini lathe. Has anyone here seen one or better yet, does anyone here own one? At just $169 if it's the same or as good as the Jet it seems hard to beat and I have a card to get free shipping on it. Anyone have idea if this is a good machine? Thanks for any responses.

Mike Barkley's mishap forced me to look into the archives, as I knew tha tI had posted how to prevent that on several occasions.: TO save a few $$$'s and not buy the appropriate tools for the job, you put yourself at risk. Teh drill stop collars are one way to prevent teh mandrel from slipping, anothe ris to buy a chuck strictly for mandrel turning: THis chuck is solid, so the mandre

QUESTION On turned grips I'm kinda new to turning full length wood grips, I have been making fore and rear nosecones for years. I have used a forchner bit in my drill press to bore the 1.5 to 3" centers and a dremel/drum to fit the blank. My question is what are the best methods to bore through a 8 to 12" full lenght grip after turning it on the lathe? and to taper the bore are you guy

Well it's time to upgrade - In need some help here - Looking at RodSmith Tubular Power Wrapper RW-XL, and the ever so expensive Renzetti complete. Big difference in $$ - Pro's/Cons? I know if I go w/ the Renzetti - it will hopefully be the last wrapper/Lathe I will hopefully ever have to buy. I have hand wrapped for a while and have owned other rodsmith (power wrapper) and Flex-coat wrappers an

How do you make a centered hole on a wood grip? I was thinking about drilling the square wood and installing allthread before turning it on the lathe but then I cant mount it to the lathe on one end. How do you guys do it?

I have been making rods for about 3 years just spinning by hand. I am now looking to buy a power rod wrapper. Are they worth it? I will be making light to heavy saltwater rods. I have looked at the pac bay wrapper but it seems pricy. I am looking to spend about $400. Less would be better but I want a quality one. I will be making rods as a a hobby and for friends.

I am looking at purchasing a mini metal lathe something around 7 X 14. Most of the work on the lathe will be small items like reel seats, winding checks and butt caps but still would like to be able to do larger items also. I know that the Grizzly, Harbor Freight, Micro-Mark, Homier and Cummins lathes are made in China at the same factory. Some have different features but the parts are interchang

I know that this subjuct has come up many times but I have a question to ask. When purchasing a lathe is it necessary to get one that has indexing on it? Looking on line to try and find a good but inexpensive lathe to turn the foam cores. Any suggestion would be helpful.

Not too long ago someone posted about a symbol to use as a way to recognize other builders. The example used was the “Diver Down” symbol used by scuba divers. You know the red one with the white strip that runs diagonally across it. It is a flag used and does have its purpose as a warning to other boaters that divers are in the area. Well you see a lot of stickers or license plates on cars

I want to thank Robert for going way above and beyond normal service. I was lucky enough to win a CTS spinning blank at the Saturday night drawing at the Expo in High Point. Fishsticks4U donated the blank and Sunday morning I went to their booth and found Robert and thanked him. This was a beautiful cobalt blue blank. I mentioned that I only fly fish and he was kind enough to swap the spinning bl

Hi everyone, thought I would sign up after a couple of weeks lurking. I've wanted to build a rod for a couple of years now but I had so many already. Well this spring I went to the basement to get my rods ready for spring fishing and they weren't there. I've looked everywhere the best ones are gone. I'm glad I didn't have anything really expensive. The up side is that now I can build a couple of

I am working on a few Spinning rods, mostly Drop Shot rods or Shaky Head rods and I was planning on using some Moose Skin colored EVA split grips. The problem that I am having is that the smallest ID for the 24" pieces of Moose skin that I can find is 1/2". The blank's OD where the foregrip and rear grip will be is smaller than 1/2" so the EVA will not sit snug on the blank like

Thanks for the Help Best Regards Mark Crouse PS: I had to buy that thing, because you can never have to many toys in the shop, I like in every corner a Lathe.

I want to make a 3 buff buffing system for my mini lathe and was wondering if any others out there have made similar setups, and if so,how they went about putting it all together? What parts(mandrel, spacers, etc) did you use to mount the buffing wheels and how did you mount the setup to your lathe? I want to be able to polish both the wood inserts and the nickel silver on the seats I have so

I am interested in purchasing a lathe. I currently have a pac bay power wrapper but I cannot get a perfectly even spin on it with a cut peice of old blank and it makes my grips have an uneven diameter. I only make two or 3 grips, all out of eva foam and all with an inside diameter of 3/8". I have no clue what I need or what would work for this? The longest grip I will ever turn is 13"

i am thinking of getting a power wrapper and i am looking at all of them. i am intrigued with the custom wrapper offered by angler's workshop. i would appreciate any feedback on people that have them and use them. i want one to be able to tweak some handles that are already on a rod. so i am looking for one with a good chuck and one that can easily hold up to turning cork and soft materials.

After burning up 2 of the Dayton 1/10 HP motors, I want to have a motor dedicated to turning grips on my Renzetti. $180 is not in the budget right now for the Renzetti motor. Has anyone successfully rigged a motor, like a drill, to their lathe. I'd prefer to not get a mini lathe as I turn some of my grips on the blank. Also, is their an alternative for a wrapping motor that doesn't cos

i have two JET mini lathes and really like them. i had a problem with the switch on my variable speed and called JET. they immediately sent me a new switch. I was thoroughly pleased with their prompt service and obvious commitment to handling my problem. this is the first problem i have ever had with either lathe( i'll have one in High Point for sale). there is quite a bit of talk and questi

Guys, I am looking into buying a chuck for my lathe. Anyone have recommendations. I am new to this and I am trying not to break the bank but I don't want a piece of junk. If it helps I have a PSI Turncrafter Pro Midi Lathe. I also posted a message on the buy/sell page if anyone has one for sale. Thanks, Taos Jones

I have a Jet Mini Lathe 1014. I'd like to have a centering chuck on the headstock. The head stock on the Jet has 4 holes to which a chuck mounts. The 3 jaw chuck I have has 3 posts to mount. 3 posts 4 holes.... Therin lies my dilemna? Is there a adapting plate one can buy? So, anybody got a self centering chuck system on their Jet? What did you do? Email me photos at gonefishing_55744@ho

Yes, we're gonna get one. We turned a cork handle this weekend. We glued up individual rings on a press, including the trim rings. The trim rings, of course, are of a different density than the basic cork rings - "harder", if you will. Trimming the trim rings became a separate exercise because (a) we're using the tips of wood files and jeweler's files as the shaping tool and (b)

I am looking into buying a lathe. Is the variable speed worth the extra money that they charge for them. I am looking at the turncrafter pro. It seems that it is a good lathe at a decent price. Any and all comments are appreciated. Thanks

I've recently run into an unexpected problem with my new JET mini-lathe (1014I). I've had it about six months, and I've put about 10-12 hours on it. On this last project, I noticed some wobble, and I just attributed it to mandrels that were slightly un-true, really hard wood, etc. As I checked closer, though, I noticed that my actual headstock is turning out of round. It's especially noticeab

I considering the purchase of a 14" Jet Mini. The headstock and tailstock both have a 3/8" passthrough for center boring the stock. I'm thinking of turning foam core blocks molded in 1-1/2" pvc and center boring them rather than trying to center the hole when I pour them. Does this make sence? If so, how could I arbor the 3/8" pass through to use a hand drill with 1/4"

Last year I bought a mini woodworking lathe from Harborfreight on sale ...... I really haven't used it yet but I plan to use it for turning rod handles and for making saltwater striper lures. I'm wondering what kind of chucks I need for truning the handles and where I can get them. THanks Rick

I've got a Delta LA200 Midi Lathe and wanted to know if there is a way to turn grips already on rods .I know I'll have to change chucks but what kind do I look at ? What do I use for the section beyond the grip? Maybe some kind of stand [ free standing] .I was turning my grips on my wrapper using a shop vac to catch the dust but it seems like I'm always fighting a dust problem.. OR is there s
