Up to now I've turned my grips on a mandrel. I mostly do fly rods. Now I have a lathe with a bore thru the headstock and can turn my grips pre-bonded to the blank. How do I protect the graphite blank when I grip it in the chuck jaws. Any other words of wisdom on the process? Do you normally support the end of the reel seat (fly rods) with the tail stock? Thanks

well since it's the new year i think i need to get a real wrapper instead of this hand wrapper. it works fine and does it's job ok but i can't shave cork or hypalon if i need to adjust a grip after it's on the rod so if you had your choice what rod wrapper would you buy. i'm also getting a lathe here soon so i can turn handles so bear that in mind

Santa brought me a brand new Rikon mini lathe and didn't even scratch it getting it down the chimney! Also got the newest issue of Rodmaker mag and have to say it's the best issue they've ever done. Now the question, on the urethane cores, how hard are these to shape with just sandpaper? I don't have any turning tools yet--- Santa forgot those--- but thought I might put in some turning tim

Years ago Dale Clemens used and sold what he referred to as a super chuck. This was for a very simple lathe to turn handles. He used a shaft holder(sorry, don't know what it is called), motor and super chuck. There were also three rod supports. My question is: has any one used this setup and where can I buy one. John

Have been using the C3J-4 from Penn State, am happy with it. But have a need now for another of the same 3-jaw self-center chuck type, but able to handle material around 2-21/4" diameter. Penn State may have it, but if they do, guess I just missed seeing it. Would appreciate any leads on what would be a good one for my Jet. Just on a side note, anyone interested in

Has anyone used the Penn State kit to add variable speed capability to their wood lathe? Been considering it for my Jet Mini and I see it's on sale now. Would like to hear first hand reports before going down that road. Dave

what is the simplest and most accurate method you can use when drilling a hole in a solid cork or eva ring, or a poker chip, to ensure putting the hole in the center of the ring so you can mount it on a mandrel? i don't own a lathe, only a small drill press. thanks john

I have been trying to setup my jet with the extended bed and can get the joint flat and straight but when I put on a straight edge there is a .004 gap at the joint that extends about 2 1/2 " to each side of the joint, is this tolerant, or should I do more adjusting, and any Idea's on what to adjust.

Does any one have pics of turning tools and which do you use most? Just got my Jet mini and am not totally sure of which tool is what, I can see round, but not sure what is skew, parting and the the rest. I love toys so give me all you got and I'll figure it out from there.

If I've counted correctly, the 2007 ICRBE featured 38 vendors in something like 60 booths. For 2008, the numbers are already pushing past those figures. Currently, I have paid contracts in hand from 44 vendors. We've pushed the number of booths to 80, which is about all the hall can hold and still feature those wide aisles that everyone liked last year. I should see contracts from 3 new and so

Hi all I am looking for a small lathe. I did the searches & searches and learned a lot. But still need to ask your opinions. What low cost lath to get I saw the grizzly which looks like a possibility. Give me some more suggestions. I'm pretty good at making things but want to keep it pretty simple and defiantly low cost. Thanks for all your help

I don't know if this will have useful information for anyone, but this morning while I was watching the "New Yankee Workshop" on PBS, it was announced that next week's show (May 19th) will be devoted entirely to lathes. This was aired in central Virginia. I have no idea if the program is shown in everyone's area, or if the same programs are aired in all parts of the country. I inferr

I got the Custom PowerWrap with the 3 jaw lathe type chuck upgrade. I haven't been able to pick up a chuck for my Jet Mini(midi?) lathe yet. I was wondering if the CPW chuck is easy enough to take off and if it will interchange with my Jet lathe. If so, then I can get started playing with my lathe. I was looking at the chuck, but don't really see how it comes off the CPW and don't want to scre

hello all, I recently purchased a jet mini lathe and am getting ready to experiment with wood handles and reel seats. I have noticed however that the lathe makes a slight squeaking sound when I turn it on. I disengaged the belt and still heard the sound. So my conclusion is its something in the motor. While I'm anxious to get going, I don't want to ruin my new toy. Should I be concerned?

I just got a Jet Mini Lathe as a gift. I would like to try a duplicator. I have been turning mostly burl cork, or burl and natural cork spinning grips. Will a duplicator work well for this? Any recomendations on which ones are the best or easiest to use would be great. Thanks, Marc

Is the bed extension the same for the old version of the Jet Mini Lathe and the new indexing version that recently came out? I imagine they would be, but I can't tell what the difference is by looking at pics online or know what "indexing" is. I picked up a few of Andy's mandrels, but don't look like they fit. Rather than pay shipping to send back to get cut was thinking it may just

How tight do you make the cork grip on a pre-made handle fit on the blank? When I drilll/ream out my factory cork handle it can be made very tight or a bit loose on the blank. Do you leave a bit of space for the epoxy? If so, how much movement or space do you leave? I'm afraid my first two handles might have been too tight. I've been careful to try to not make the lower end of the handle tighter
