Hi, Thanks guys. Makes sense. I just built up a new high end 3wt blank. I had SA XPS 4dt loaded on my reel (this is the line that I thought I would use on this blank all along), so I took it our to the park and had a few casts. The rod loaded very nicely, but it just lacked something...it seemed that something was wrong. Then I put another reel on with Airflo Technical series freshwater DT3

Hi All,
As I understand things there is a scheduled weight (measured in grains) for a designated line weight. For example, a DT 1 should be 60 grains, a DT 2 should be 80 grains and DT 3 should be 100 grains. My questions are as follows:
1. Do WF lines carry the same grain weight; and
2. I would be grateful if you would post any grain weights for 3 and 4 wt lines that you know of (to

7. metal lathes
I saw the link below on wood lathes and it got me thinking...any ideas for a suitable lathe that I could experiment turning reels on? I know its probably really expensive etc but I am just interested to hear what lathes are likely to be suitable candidates to turn a reel on.

Hey Cody, sounds like the rod will look stellar once finished!
I have not finally decided what thread combo's etc I'll use on my 000wt but am thinking of just using the tan 290 used by sage (boring I know). I turn my own grips and am always on the prowl for the highest quality cork available, but finding it is really difficult these days. In the circumstances my rods sometimes take months t

I dont intend to be drawn into the debate. Just wanted to say that a day or two ago I e-mailed Bingham - it was a minor e-mail far less important to them than actual orders. However within a few minutes I had a pleasant response from Karen. This was teh first intereaction I have had with Bingham and I must say I was very impressed. Perhaps others have had negative experiences but for what its

Hi Everyone,
Is there a trick to building a tapered ramp of thread from the top end of a cork fly rod grip to the graphite blank (ie instead of having a winding check)? Or do you just wrap and wrap and wrap and build up a profile? Just a bit concerned about not getting a smooth uniformed thread showing under the expoxy if I just wrap randomly.
Thanks, Gavin

Hi Bill, thanks. You probably are right, I too have heard that the slide bands can be a pain in the @#$. I spoke to Dan at REC yesterday and he suggested that I try teh AUSL aluminium reel seat. Insofar as weight is concerned I weighed -
1. Bellenger UTLB660NS - 31grams;
2. REC PLRN - 15grams; and
3. REC ABGS - 23grams.
Having used an AUSL on a previous build i know it is smaller a

Hi Everone,
Looking for as light a reel seat as possible for a 000wt. If any of you have the following reel seats and know their weight I would be gratful if you could post them:
1. REC NSXL;
2. REC NSUSL;
3. Bellinger ULTB 660 NS;
4. Struble U24; and
5. Struble U25
If you know of other lighter seats please also let me know.
Thanks,
Gavin

19. guide sizes
Hi All,
I am preparing to build up a new sage. I went onto their website for guide spacing suggestions and sizes and I see they refer to guide sizes with a "t" at the end (for example "2/0t". What does the "t" mean? I cant seem to find any listed on the sites that sell H&H guides.
Also I noticed that H&H make lite wire guides but they only go up to s

If you had your choice of a premium 3wt rod what rod would you build on and why?

If anyone has built on a cts blank in lower line weights (ie 0wt - 3wt) I would love to hear your reviews. In particular how the blank fishes and compares to some premium brands.

27. 0wt and 1 wts
Hi All,
I am looking to build up a 0wt or maybe a 1wt fly rod. I am aware that presently Sage as ultralight sticks, but I am looking for something a bit longer (ie 8'1" to 8'6"). Preferably a premium blank. Any suggestions.
Thanks.

Hi check out CTS for a moderately priced but good blank - they have the full range. On the really high end have a look at Burkheimer. I spoke with Kerry the other day and he tells me he is busy working on a new 2wt blank (seem to recall that there were 2 lengths). Knowing Kerry's rods it will have an ERN of 2 so it will be very close to what you are looking for. Remember the TXL range of an E

30. shrink wrap
Hi All,
Anyone got experience with using shrink wrap on cork grips? I have never used it before and am considering putting some on a a very high end cork grip while I am building up the rod (so I do not dirty the grip in the process). Do you just hold it over a flame and does just take teh shape of teh grip and fit smoothly over the grip?
