Good point Greg. I dind't think of that. I certainly dont want the guide foot to show on this rod. In the circumstances I am going to use CP and properly coat the wraps. Are all the CP brands the same or is there one that is better? Suppose its a personal choice?

I am building on a green Burkheimer blank so what I may try is leave teh green thread without CP and put CP on the red tipping so that this is visible. Best, Gav

Hi, I just posted a thread ("colour preserver") looking for similar info. I am building up a Burkheimer and it is a very similar green to the colour of Winston's WT. I tried a bunch of combinations this weekend with different finish. The Gudebrof Dark Green with Flex Coat Lite was, in my view, the closest out of all the Gudebrod threads. The red/scarlet/candy apple was way off thoug

Hi All, hope everyone is well. I am experimenting with some Pearsall's silk thread and noticed, because it is not NCP thread, that the colour of the blank bleeds right through once you put finish on. I do want the thread colour to be noticeable with finish on, but I also want to allow some of the blank to bleed through to tone the thread colour down a bit. Do any of you more experienced bu

Hi All, has anyone ever used pearsall's highland green silk on a dark green blank? It is lighter in colour than I anticipated (much lighter than guderbrod's dark green) I just want to see what everyones views are. I will be using either flex coat lite or guderbrod high build. Thanks.

Hi guys thanks for all your feedback. Having looked at the grip again I don't think it needs filling. The flaws are so minor that I think I will just go with the natural look and maybe seal. Best regards, Gavin

Thanks Robert. Do you mean that if you fill those imperfections it does not take long before they "open up" or reveal themselves again?

Hi All, I am 99% finished turning a fly rod grip (reverse half wells) having used the best cork that I could find (6 months of waiting but I got it). Now while the cork is all CG1 there are one or two smallish imperfections here and there. I want to know what your views are about "filling" those small imperfections. If its recommended do you use cork dust mixed with epoxy or do yo

Hi All, I recently received my 6wt sage back from sage after it had been in for a warranty repair. Needless to say it came looking as good as new. How do they get their finish so even? do they apply tape to the end so that the varnish gets a defined edge?

Hi All, I purchased a high quality reel seat, a while back, for a 3wt rod I am building. The seat was ordered with stabilized black ash wood insert. I am only now getting around to building the rod up so the components have been in my workshop for a while. During the time that the reel seat sat in my workshop it seems to have lost some of its allure and has gone quite dull. My question

Hi All, What glues are you all using to glue your checkerboard cork pieces together? I normally use Rod Bond for gluing cork grips onto teh blank but teh cure time is 24hr. Can one use super glue or pratleys etc instead with a cure time of 10-15 minutes? Thanks, Gavin

Thanks Mike, I have just got the blue jigs. Tried with a razor blade and it worked - but it was hard work. Will check out the sites you sent. Thanks, Gavin

Hi All, Anyone tried using old style razor blades for cutting wedges from cork in one of these jigs? If so does a razor blade work well or is a saw a better option? Thanks.

Hi everyone, i am looking at buying a rapidograph technical pen to try lettering on my blanks. What size tip should I get? Also do they come in different coloured inks?

I think that Hardy Marksman is also a reel you should check out. The little one will be perfect for what you need. Also have a look at the small orvis battenkil LA. A friend of mine fishes with this reel on his 000wt and the rod is nicely balanced. The orvis definitely weighs more than the marksman, but not much beats the marksman when it comes to weight.

Hi Guys, Those checkerboard jigs which Custom Tackle sells - can you cut slices (ie 1/4', 1/8" etc) as well as do checkerboard/pie slices? Thanks, Gavin

Thanks Mike. I did speak with Bob, unfortunately they don't have stock at the moment and expect to get only in 2-3 months time. Incidentally, I saw one (looks identical to the Custim Tackle one) in the Merrick Tackle online catalouge - page 23. I dropped them a line, but have not heard back yet. Gavin

Paul, I am a ultra light junkie. In the past I deemed sliding bands on my reel seats as being too heavy and I would just use cable-ties on cork reel seats. I woulds just clip the ct's off after each day on the stream. Over time I came to realize that those few ounces really made very little difference in the scheme of things (especially given the hassles associated with it - like getting to the

Hi all, I am looking to try my hand at a a few checkerboard rings in my next grip. I did some research on the site and saw that Custom Tackle sells a really sweet cork "pie" jig. It is in the photo library. Unfortunately I contacted them and their next shipment is likely to arrive only in 60-90 days. Does anyone know where I could get my hands on one of these (or a similar produc

The sevier blanks are nice - I have have a couple of them. Also have a look at Dan Craft's blanks. I have only tried the 3wt and up models, but I know he has some multi-piece 1wt and 2wt blanks if memory serves.

Hi there, I have been following this thread with interest. I would highly recommend the Shilton SL 5 for your purposes. Some of you may not know the brand...it is a line of reels that has taken the South African flyfishing market by storm and distributors are springing up all over the world (which is testimony to the reels capabilities and performance). I once read a review about them which re
