It would take alot of size A thread to fill a 1" dia x 9" long butt wrap. Since I'm not getting paid too much for this wrap I couldn't spend too much time on it so I did this easy tiger wrap to save time, but still look good. On 14' surf rods I use size D thread most of the time, unless it's for tournament casting rod..............Kyle I don't remember the exact figure but I put som

Thanks Tom, I knew it was going to ify so I did a sample ahead of time so I could figure out if it would work, or not. A little experimenting paid off. Steve, my lousey camera may not pick up the stripes, but I will give it a try................Kyle

I'm sure some of you have tried this but I got such good results that I thought I'd post it here. I'm building a simple but elegant black and gold 1" dia surfrod and wanted a gold/black 3d wrap. I did a sample wrap the usual way, black and met gold underneath with a black top wrap with a dummy thread and didn't get good results. It came out dark and the tiger stripes were kinda plain. I did

That is nice to know Tom, I have always pointed out that I have always had a fishing/hunting license and told a few people that I have met over the years(that have never bought a license) that the money for those licenses goes to a good cause and I am happy/honored to pay it. Haven't missed a year since I was a kid(47 years old now). Now I feel better about paying FET because I do build rods fo

Does this mean that if I throw a barbeque, cook the food, and my friends pitch in for the food I now have to declare this ? It's not the perfect analagy but it's not far off if you are just building a rod for a friend ...............Kyle Of course, I never make my friends pitch in for the pig or brisket, but still? I bought the rod parts(the pig), built the rod(cooked the pig and performed

That was a guess because I haven't seen it lately. After looking at it they are 2.5"-3" and the stick is closer to 4'. Is this really a pertinent question? LOL!...............Kyle Ps, I didn't bother counting them either, again, an estimate, does it matter? Reguardless, it's a cool looking stick painted black for doing test wraps .and the different 3D wraps are all butted up against

Thanks, Like I said , I did a few full size wraps back when the RMM issue came out. Along with a 3' stick that has about 2 dozen 4" sample trys, all with different types and colors of thread. It's a really cool looking stick!. I could probably sell it to some parents for their kid like I once did something similar with a sample wrap stick at a garage sale, LOL! (It wasn't for sale, but a kid

I can't find my RMM about 3D tiger butt wrap and was wondering if this was the basic idea. Wrap 2 contrasting threads up the rod, epoxy, and then wrap a black and a dummy thread back down the rod (opposite direction) and remove the dummy. I've done a couple dozen of these but it's been awile. I know to epoxy between the two wraps. Just checking before I do it. If my directions are correct all

That's odd, because I didn't write the second part of my post, and it says "Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/09/2008 11:01AM by Moderator." at the bottom? I'm not the least bit upset, just confused now??? Anyway, it doesn't matter now and my quesion was answered................Kyle I also thought it was odd that Tom would recommend Tich as being titanium, I knew he knows that

Spencer, I used all sic tit guides on my 12wt because I plan to use it for fish up to 100#s+, and I also have a ton of braid backing on it. This new rod is an 8wt for saltwater use. I thought the titanium tip would be heavy enough for fish up to 30#s or so, but I haven't used a tit wire tip before so I don't know what the wear resistance is. Again, the backing will be braid since ya never know wh

I heat all my epoxy finish even if it doesn't have any bubbles because it will give you a more even finish, but like above, don't over heat and always do it while the epoxy is still wet. As for preventitive mehods, I recently made a moterized epoxy stirrer like he ones you see on the market. I thought it was just a gimmick tool until I tried it out.. It mixes the epoxy in just a minute or two and

Hey Tom, the csfg are tianium carbide, which I thought was just a coating over SS frames. Am I wrong? I want solid titanium for use in the salt just because when I grind down the feet the coating will be gone in that litle part. Also, solid titanium is lighter, which is just as important. Thanks for your help. Bill, I've been wanting to try out Recoil guides and they have everything I'm lookin

I fish offshore in my yak so I need a waterproof reel for punching through he surf. After searching for awhile I found Danielsson-flyreels(.com, with 3- s's). They are expensive, but are good to 300' deep(incase I take it scuba diving with me) and have wide arbors in both directions(arbor is wide and so is the reel). They have been dunked in salt repeatedly with no problems, and they are a dream

Does anybody know where to get single foot titanium wire fly guides without ceramic inserts? Preferably wholesale? Including the tip top. Thanks, Kyle Try the suppliers on the left,- Anglers Workshop- Bingham Enterprises- Custom Tackle or any other of your favorite suppliers, look for part # CSFG - I believe it is a PacBay product.

Thanks guys, I will try the u40 and the chromaseal. But the way the blank seemed to bleed through and left a marbeling affect I am 99% sure it was the blank. I have a large supply of Allstar blanks in stock so some experimenting with other CPs is in the works. Thanks again.................Kyle

I never thought of that Jim. While I think they were(are) both Allstar blanks, that is what it looked like(marbled, like the blank bled through). Like I said above, it looked a little marbled, and that would explain it..............Kyle I take that back, the second rod is an Allstar and the first (the one with no problems)was a Loomis GLX, which might explain it

Thanks Billy, I'll definately do that but that doesn't explain why it was fine the first time and not the second. One thing I didn't mention was There was a different brand of thread on the two rods. What brand do you use now? Thanks..............Kyle I've always heard good things about Diamondite, which is why I was trying it out. I'm certainly not bashing Diamondite, there are several varia

I've been building rods for 20 years and this has never happened before (of course, I never use CP, only 5-10 times total but never a problem) . I bought some diamondite CP recently to try it out. First try was good, but I put it on a set of shaded wraps (from white to purple) and all the wraps truned mostly black with some purple showing after the epoxy was applied. I thought maybe the dark bla

I have Billy Vivona's "Decorative Wraps" book, and Clemen's "Custom Rod thread Art" book and I can't find the "Scales" butt wrap instructions. I am experienced, but instead of figuring it out, I'd like the easy way out, instructions. I think I know how to do it without droping a thread each time (that's my guess on how to get the curve of the scale), but a little h

I have both and prefer a nice sable brush(in different sizes) for finishing all my threadwork (there are exceptions though). I can make a good brush last for many rods using a good brush cleaner (never regular alcohol). The spatulas seem harder to use in my opinion, but it's just that, my opinion. I know there are others that prefer the spatulas. It's whatever you get the best results from. Somet
