I have used heat shrink tape before. You can fish with it if you like, not to mention casting with it. I once saw Nick Meyers of Breakaway at a casting tournement with his guides heat shrunk on to the rod, and he casts about 700'...............Kyle

I'm building a memorial rod for Artie Hebert. For those that don't know, he passed away about a month ago. He was a professional rod builder and also made videos available at Cabelas. He "invented" a special rod for shark fishing the Texas coast. It is a cut down Breakaway Stinger, from 14' to 10'. It is the best rod design for dealing with the sargasm that we get here while shark fish

When you all say "straightest access" I assume you mean to put the pieces together so they form the straightest rod possible, forgetting the spine? Right? Thanks, Kyle
Ps, The reason I was thinking about the extra fighting grip was because I expect to catch fish over 100#s with this outfit, but it sounds like I might just create a weak spot for the rod to break at

Forgot to mention the fighting grip. A 5" cork grip about 4" above my regular handle would be great for my application(BIG FISH!!!). I also heard a test that doing that would snap the rod because the rod wasn't built for a fighting grip like the sage rods that are "supposedly" built up under and in front of that fighting grip. Loomis(the blank I'm using) said not to do it af

I have been building rods for 17 years, 7 as pro, but no flyrods. I figured I might learn something new by buying a couple of fly rod building books. Now, while I repsect the authors, I found that the 2 guys put their guides on oposite sides of the blank from each other. And some of the reasoning was way off.
For an accurate cast the guides need to be on top of the spine (rod bent toward you

Hey Tom, I was also wondering where you got that woven graphite tube that you used for a flyrod handle in vol 10 #5 ? Thanks, Kyle Ligon

Hey Tom, I can't find you contact info so I'm going to post it here......
Thanks Tom, I allready did the search and looked for that back issue (vol2 #1)and it isn't listed in the back issue list. How do I order that issue? There is no contact button on the back issue site. Thanks again, Kyle

71. Feather inlays
Does anybody know where I can get info on how to inlay feathers? I couldn't find anything about that in the magazine copys that I have, and I did a search on google but didn't come up with too much. Basically, just lay one feather at a time and use cp to temporarily hold them on the rod untill I have all the feathers on the blank. Then epoxy them. Any advice is appreciated..............Kyle

Thanks for the great replys guys, I think all my Qs have been answered, except for the last one about the fighting but. Is anybody familiar with the retractable 4" butt from the company the starts with an "M" and ends with "errick" ? It looks nice, but I can't tell from the pic in the catalog. Thanks again.............Kyle

I posted the same Q here awhile back so I switched to Threadmaster and have been happy with it so far (except for the price!!!). It is supposed to last 100 times longer before it yellows...........Kyle

I just made one out of 2 pcs of MDF glued and screwed together in an "L" shape. I used a table saw to cut a "V" notch in the longer section, parallel to the upright section(about 2" high), and the center of the groove is the same distance from the upright as a drafting template. Just lay the rod in the groove and lay the template on top and that aligns the buttwrap. I bel

I have been building rods for 17 years now (7 years professionally) and this is my first flyrod(been flyfishing for many years, just never built one myself). It's a 9' - 12wt GLX. I want to keep the wt low as possible so I was thinking of using the fuji single foot titanium SIC guides. That would cut in half the amount of epoxy and thread as compared to double footed snake guides, and the guide

Tom, are those Pfuegler Trion reels waterproof? Mine have to be able to be submersed regularly due to offshore fishing in my yak. I fish in seas 4-6' high so they get very wet at times, especially if the yak gets dumped with the rods strapped onto the yak. Thanks, Kyle
Spencer, do you have a source for your favorite 12wt? I googled around and didn't find what I wanted, mainly cast or spin bl

I'm in the market for a couple of new fly blanks, and reels. One is going to be an 8wt- 9' for redfish, jacks, and trout in the surf and bays. I allready know what I want for it, and that's a GLX fast action blank. The other blank is where I'm not sure. It will be a 12-14wt - 9' for catching fish up to about 100#s form my kayak offshore, in the wind, lot's of 15 knot winds!. I looked at a 12wt GL

79. CP question
I rarely use CP and had swiched to Gudebrod(I think it has acrylic in it which makes it better???), but since it's been on the shelf for a few years I was wondering what most of you all use so I can get some replacement CP. I will probably be using it for asthetics only, but who knows depending on the answers I get here. Thanks in advance...............Kyle

80. Re: Thread types
Thanks Billy but there are strength issues to deal with too. Yes, I can overwrap but again, that just takes more time. I also need consistency in thread height if I want to use some D mixed in, but I know what you're saying. Thanks again, I'm just trying to find everything MY WAY, LOL!
What Dave said??? Thanks, Kyle

I believe, but not positive, the Rainshadow SU 1509 rated 5-12 OZ is the new Breakaway 2pc/1pc. If it is, it should do the trick. Ask them if the butt is about 4' and tip about 9', if that's the case it is the new 2pc/1pc. Many of the new Breakaway blanks are made by RainSadow and start with SU. The 2pc/1pc used to come at 13'2" and you were supposed to cut some off the butt. I never cut min

82. Re: Thread types
The Madiera is the only one that I saw that has multiple shades of each color, which is what I want. The only problem is that I cater mostly to Beach Sharkers, so the rods are big and fairly long(10') blanks about 1" in diameter so I really need size D thread, or else I'll be doing alot more work. Does anybody sell size D and in multiple shades of the same color? Thanks, Kyle

Thanks, I assume poly threads will act like nylon thread when epoxied? I mean, almost dissappear over a black blank if no CP is used? Thanks again, Kyle

84. Re: Marblizing
Thanks guys, this all sounds pretty easy, and I've played with mabling paints a little in the past. Does my system of marbling over lightly epoxied underwraps sound OK? If I split the underwraps and marble on the black blank in the middle of the split under wraps I'm just worried about being able to see the inside edges of the underwrap, and I would also be marbling over a black blank, and it s

85. Marblizing
I also want to try some marblizing on this next rod I'm doing for a client. Is the method described above in the library the basic method used on all these pretty rods in the pic gallery?
Also, my plan is to put Marbling under the guides and maybe some flames here and there. I'm gonna start with Metallic Silver underwraps(this is an unlimited class rod). Epoxy a thin coat coat over those wrap

87. Thread types
Been looking at all the new pics, I've been away from robuilding for awhile and everything seems new. Anyway, I'm seeing all these pics (on this board)with, I think, Rayon thread that I had started to experiment with but that was when I quit for a few years back. There are multiple shades of each color. Do these threads come in NCP also? and , again, where's the best place to buy from? Thanks ahe

I cater to beach shark fishermen mainly, and with all the sargasm weed here in tx the higher the better, untill it comes to fighting those big fish. I make unlimited class rods for these guys by cutting down heavy 13'-14' surfrods to 8-10', and it works great, even for casting off piers, but not the beach due to large baits where we kayak them out. Just a suggestion since I'm dealing with the sam
