Tip on 3D tiger wraps

I'm sure some of you have tried this but I got such good results that I thought I'd post it here. I'm building a simple but elegant black and gold 1" dia surfrod and wanted a gold/black 3d wrap. I did a sample wrap the usual way, black and met gold underneath with a black top wrap with a dummy thread and didn't get good results. It came out dark and the tiger stripes were kinda plain. I did disort the bottom threads. All threads were size D. I did another sample wrap with the first wrap as usual and then used a size A black thread and a D size dummy thread. That was it so I finished the 9" wrap on the blank today and it is really nice. The stripes zigzag up the blank about 4-5" before turning back down to the begining. Not to mention all the "fisheye stripes" encircled by multiple rows of stripes. Needless to say, I love it, and it's much lighter too so the stripes are really visible. I know it's probably been posted here before but I didn't see it. Hope somebody can use this. It's called the "Kcon 3D Tiger Wrap" LOL! (My handle on the local boards is Kcon)................Kyle

The key is always to use a bottom layer that is very high in contrast - black and gold do not meet that criteria. The article spells this out plainly.

Either way, thanks for sharing your tip on mis-sizing the thread sizes. It may help someone wanting to try that variation.

Sounds like you struck gold, LOL. If you don't mind, post some pics of that wrap, you've got my curiosity going now

Thanks Tom, I knew it was going to ify so I did a sample ahead of time so I could figure out if it would work, or not. A little experimenting paid off. Steve, my lousey camera may not pick up the stripes, but I will give it a try................Kyle

It would take alot of size A thread to fill a 1" dia x 9" long butt wrap. Since I'm not getting paid too much for this wrap I couldn't spend too much time on it so I did this easy tiger wrap to save time, but still look good. On 14' surf rods I use size D thread most of the time, unless it's for tournament casting rod..............Kyle

I don't remember the exact figure but I put something like 1- 200 yds, give or take, on a surf rod underwrap once
