I'll try the urethane over the threadmaster and compare it to TM alone, and also w/out TM at all. I'll check for scratch resistance and for looks. I haven't used Diamondite yet, but I'll give it a try too. Thanks..........Kyle

I've done alot of experimenting with foam core handles so far, and instead of using spray urethane I have been using a thin coat or two of the light Threadmaster as the final coat. It seems to really give a full luster to the graphite underneath. It makes the handle look like it has a deeper coat than there really is, just like the clearcoat on a car. More so than just the spray urethane. Makes s

I love the Fuji LCSG series for my surf casters, which is what I build the most. They look cool, work great, and are very stoutly built. Conoflex uses them on some of their rods...........Kyle

I have thought about paint as under wraps on my light rods. Any larger rod that requires true under wraps I always use a light metallic color like gold or whatever and it looks awesome. Not being a CP person I have been thinking alot about paint lately. The last rod I did I used met. gold under and red nylon over which gives you a candy apple red finish, and it does look awesome! I love the way y

Thanks guys, that is what I was doing when I was experimenting with the guides. I think I'll probably use a 2 footed boat and trolling guide(LRSG ) for the one transition guide if I need it. We'll see what works the best. This is what I was thinking would work anyway......Kyle
The problem that made it awekward was that the 3 footed transition guide looked like it needed to be smaller and with

I'm not familiar with the "simple spiral" wrap . Do you not use a transition guide???.....Kyle

I had a request for that, has anybody used 3 footed guides on a spiral wrapped rod? If so, do you recomend a 3 footed guide for the transition guide(s). This is going to be a heavy duty shark rod, and not for casting, basically an unlimited class rod. I played with them on the blank and it seemed a little awkward, but I still need to experiment some more. Any advice is appreciated..........Kyle L

When I use the "Concept" , and have since it came out, due to it makes so much sense, my last few guides, all the same size, are darn close to equadistant. I adjust them a little acording to the action of the rod, but it probably doesn't matter since you get to use an extra guide or so in the process..................Kyle

I build alot of surf rods for tourament casting and fishing. I usually make the tip one size larger than the smallest running guides. I usually use #10s for the smaller guides and a 12 for the tip. My knots have no problem getting through the guides or tip top. Artie hebert (may he rest in peace) used to build all the tourney rods for the SFCCI and he taught me that. His theory was that your rod

I managed to make a couple of sample handles that came out pretty nice except for one thing. When you tuck the sleeve into the handle, how do you drill out the extra graphite that is in the hole and keep it centered in the handle? I tried drilling out the handle first to the diameter of the blank and that din't work, and yes, I have the spade bits with the 1/4" pilot tube on the tip, but wit

47. Graphite handles
My urethane foam came today and I'm getting ready to make some new handles. In the RMM Tom says he sprays the finished handle with urethane spray. Is that spray uv stable? I assume it is since that was recommended, but since I've seen so many yellowed rods over the years I'm just being cautious. Thanks, Kyle

I use black elect tape whereever something needs protecting, like the seat itslf, and in any other places. I've had masking tape get sanded through, and elect tape is tougher. You can clean off any residue with alcohol......Kyle

Years ago I did a gold metalic weave and somehow a black crosswrap thread was misplaced. (didn't see it until the end of course) I just took a gold metallic pen and colored the thread gold. Unless you knew it was there you couldn't tell it was there, nobody has seen it and said anything to this day (17 years or so)............Kcon

I'm building a memorial rod for Artie Hebert. For those that don't know, he passed away about a month ago. He was a professional rod builder and also made rodbuilding videos available at Cabelas. He "invented" a special rod for shark fishing the Texas coast. It is a cut down Breakaway Stinger, from 14' to 10'. It is the best rod design for dealing with the sargasm that we get here while
