The first guide is at 3 inchs next 4 then 4 1/2 then 5 and so on it loads great and is a blast to fish with on opening day trout fishing March 1 here in Missouri. Done anothe blank 6 foot used the Morton chart it came out with 11 guides did not like it like the 8 guided rod.

I have built a lot of 6 foot 721 blanks for crappie that the people wanted a 5 1/2 foot rod but after trying the 6 foot 2 pcs rod liked it a lot better. Maybe have him try 5 a 51/2 and 6 foot blank and he may to see and feel all are sensitive but some are more sensitive than others. He then could make a better selection. Edwin Kime

Lots of people sell black cork. Try Mudhole, Netcraft is only a few of the many that sell black cork. Natural cork alongside of black cork makes a nice contrast. Edwin Kime

We use the SP-721 6 foot which could be extended to the 7 foot that you want a really good blank that goes back a long ways. Edwin Kime

What is important is that the hand wrapper works for you. You can always find ways to improve it. What really matters is to find something that works for you, and most important is that you built it. New idea a new concept it looks really great. Good luck on your wraps. Edwin Kime

You can cut a fiberglass blank section and slide it into the butt section of your rod so it goes about three inches past the splits and epoxy it into place. Fill in the butt section with epoxy so that the bottom is solid will also help make it stronger. Fill in the splits with epoxy using wraps to hold them together till they set.,then wrap this section with size "D" thread the epoxy ov

I have a hand wrapper that I made and it was put in the Rod Maker magazine. It has a large hole in one of the end supports so the rod cannot jump out and you can put foam or use a rubberband to hold the rod in place as you wrap the guides. I also have a a motor that I mounted on a piece of sheet metal that slips into the end "V" notch section, the sides wrap around the uprights of the h

I use lighter lines and find that I do not need the larger butt guide on the ultralite rods I like. I Find the larger guides are in the way most of the time for me. Some times their is no one answer for all rods only a guide to start with. I think you need to use your experiance and judgement in matters like this as what work great for me may not be what somebody else wants or may not work for h

I would have a concern that it may pentrate the cork and mess up the glue. You may wan to try a patch first with the thin cork. Ed

You will need some way to hold the cork tight with the reel seat. A clamp is the best way but not the only way as Jeremy notes. Large rubber band works and many other ways may be used. Edwin

When our 5 year old grandson wanted a fly rod we found he could not handle a 7 foot rod. So I built him one on a batson SP-721 6 foot two pcs. rod. He is now 10 years old and still uses the rod great for bluegill and crappie. If you make a rod to big for a 5 year old he will not be able to handle it properly. This all depends on the child some can and some cannot. If he cannot and you give them s

Try the IC-721 6 foot rod but is one pcs. nice blank great for your type of fishing. I fish the same rivers use the SP-721-2 spinning rod and is easier to break down and use in a boat or canoe. Also made a fly rod from same blank to use around the trees were have little room. Hope this helps. Good fishing. Edwin Kime edwinkime@ho

Took our 4 year old grand daughter fishing yesterday. I had built her a new rod for her soon to be birthday but let her use it early. After caughting some bluegill and perch she caught a 3 pound channel cat and landed it all by herself. I had redone a old solid glass rod which was about 4 feet painted the blank blue with red wraps and gold bands on the guides and put a Kansas Quarter on the butt

For me it was better to start with what you are starting with and then add thing as you can. You may not have the the best first rod but it will be one you bilt and I am sure it will work just fine for you. I t will not be the only one you will build. Cabelas has expoxy in packets that help when you start. Also can use perglass which is quick drying but take more coats. Good luck. Edwin Kime

My wife prefers to use Spin/Cast rods and I sprial wrap the rods I make for her. She likes them and prefers them over the normally wrapped rods. The grand kids like the sprial wrap Spin/Cast rods also. Edwin Kime

I like the Batson SP-721-2 2 pcs is great for trout, smallmouth bass, and crappie. Being 2 pcs is easy to transport. Schneider's has some really good prices on these blanks. I got some of mine from him and got some from the show last year. Edwin Kime

I use to do the regular wrap for my wife rods since that she likes to use Zebco reels, but have since gone to the sprial wrap and she now prefers it wrapped it wrapped as a sprial as is better for her for fighting fish. To each his own. Edwin Kime

I have done this but usally put a coin of birth state on the end of the handle. But have also done coins by the reel. Flex Coat will turn a yellow color OK for threads but not good on coins. Best to use a clear sealer like Envirtex Lite pour-on I have found and can be gotten in hobby stores. Edwin Kime

I have used the clips tor holding tubing 3/8 and 1/4 inch and then adjust them to what you want and use thread to hold them in place like you would a guide on a rod. Done this for others hope it would work for you.
