Does anyone have any experience with the Mud Hole Lathe that they are advertising?

i haven't personally seen one, but most of the smaller lathes are very similar. i would not be surprised that they are made in the same factory. i am sure it will do fine for most handle work. just remember that the lathe is only a small part of the investment in turning. you will need a chuck, tools, mandrels, etc.

It is the same size and shape and color as the Penn State mini lathe. Not that it has to be the exact same thing as that one based on looks alone, but it at least looks similar. It could be made by the same company that makes the one for Penn State. And Mud Hole is a sponsor so if the unit is decent it merits shopping with them.

Not quite the same - note the switch location difference. However, they are most likely made by the same company.

All of the reports on the Penn State Lathe is that they are an excellent product for the money.
I would assume that if the units are by the same company, that the reviews would be similar.

The lable plate on it say PSI Turncrafter if you enlarge it. I have a Turncrafter Pro and really like it. Worth the money

So it is the same lathe, then? In which case it comes down to money and shipping costs and any specials being offered.

Knowing and dealing with MudHole, I can almost guarentee that the photo is NOT pirated. If it's on there website it is the exact product you will receive. I too have a TurnCrafter Pro, on the advise of Mike Barkley, and love it. The only other things I would suggest you get if they are offered is the bed extension, as that will help with boring your blank, and the variable speed option (again if available. If the one MudHole is listing is the same as a TurnCrafter, those items will be available from PSI.

Does the lath have variable speed motor? I cannot find it in the add. Whar about the extension can you buy that from Mud Hole also?

If you follow the links on Mudholes site it shows PSI as the manufacturer so any extras extended bed etc should fit ,
there have been quite a few problems with VS on the midi lathes as the switches are burning out very quickly or in some cases don't work from the start, it is an easy fix but something to be aware of- note this is not just PSI but includes Jet and steel city perhaps others

I would suggest you get a variable speed model. I found changing speed to be annoying although many people do not find it to be a hassle. I bought the vs motor this year. I have had one for 4 years no problems with a switch--the on off switch gets the most use so it can be subject to wear and tear. I also have turncrafter plus vs and have used it extensively so far without problems (knock on wood). I would also suggest the bed extension since if you plan on doing any boring greater than 6 inches you will need the extra length. What a new user does not realize is that the chucks take up a lot of bed length so the effective bed is much smaller. There are a lot of extra costs involved before you can do anything. If you need more turning addiction, check out the lathes with penturning starter kits included. Good luck!

I added the Variable speed conversion kit a year ago (no problems with the switch) and highly recommend it!! I also highly recommend the extension bed. It makes life a LOT easier! Mudhole also sells the extension bed.
