The Diamond 2 (Envirotex) that you mixed incorrectly seeped into the thread and did not set. So even wiping most of it off did not really remove all of it. That is where the color change problem lies. You have wet resin or hardner in that layer of thread and it will not look the same as the thread where the epoxy cured.

Anyone that did not experience Mark Crouse's seminar on using alternative materials in rod building really missed a great deal of information. Not to take anything away from all the other great seminars and presenters, but Mark really offered some eye opening insight into thinking outside the box in regard to the various materials that are suitable for rod building, and how to actually work with

I slit a piece of PVC pipe and use it as a spacer between the split grips. That way you can use your clamp as usual and then remove the PVC spacer afterwards.

The more total surface you have to hold onto the better. A textured grip offers you less overall surface to hold. A smooth surface offers more surface to grip. This is why the Shark skin lines shoot so well. They are textured and therefore there is less overall surface in contact with the guides. For a rod grip you want just the opposite. Where hard grips like wood or carbon fiber are concerned,

Have not seen it but if it hides the keeper by using a tube inside the handle I can see liking it better than the keeper types that protrude. All I have ever experienced with most common hookkeepers is line snarling and knuckle busting.

Guide flexibility does not affect casting distance. I spend a lot more time reading this forum than posting on it. In my personal experience there are ma

Eugene, if you believe that the companies you mention are using cutting edge, state of the art guide trains, well........ I rest my case. Thanks for the discourse.

Eugene, it has nothing to do with guide size, but with numbers of different sizes guides. I consider myself fairly adept at fly casting. I can empty the spool of fly line on most of my rods with only moderate effort. What I have found is completely opposite what you state here. What you call "your" approach is nothing more than the old school standard practice of using every guide size

Eugene I am curious about why you recommend so many guide sizes. After taping some up and looking at the line path I am convinced that using FEWER sizes creates a much straighter line path. What you have listed here is more of a stair step erractic path. Tape them up both ways and see for yourself. I have convinced myself that all these sizes are for the fisherman, not the line or the rod. I now

Since the buy sell page is not part of the sponsor list on this forum and is a free public service, why not publicize the person who knowingly sold you bad goods? I would think that Tom would want to weed out any bad eggs that are using the buy sell pages for dishonest purposes.

He is an oriental rod importer and probably has a long E-mail list of builders and suppliers. The spam goes to an online pharmacutical company. Most likely he got hit with a spammer bot virus that is mailing from his E-mail address to anyone on his E-mail list. See this:

You said that in the 3rd installment of your article series. Nobody here that I know of has accused you or anyone of hijacking the technique. You gave credit that Scott did it first. So????

Really good blog entries the past couple days. Especially today. Goes back to what Dale Clemens advised to, "learn by sharing." Very enjoyable. I have been involved in other hobbies and businesses and still feel that most custom rod builders are better when it comes to sharing information than anyone else. Most anyway.

I would love to see someone make a slow action rod into a fast action rod by guide type and placement. Or vice versa. The action is created by the taper of the rod shaft. Unless you sand into the blank to change the taper you cannot change the action.

The work of Dr. Spolek and Dr. Hoffman are a complete waste of time for the average fisherman or rod builder. Most will never even bother to read that type of stuff. Dr. Hanneman has been the first guy I know of to take such principles and make them user friendly for the audience they were intended for. This is why the CCS has gone farther in five or six years than that other stuff will go in an

If people are going to carry things to the Nth degree, then here are some things to consider if you really want the most sensitivity. Never use a painted rod blank. If your chosen blank is painted, scrape the paint off. Paint increases the mass density of the rod and reduces sensitivity. Scrape the paint off your reel sideplates as well. This will reduce mass density. Consider drilling holes in y

Youtube can be helpful but you must be very careful with what you see there. It is not fact checked and often the things shown are completely lacking in any sort of standard safety practices. Remember, anyone can upload a video to Youtube. I can upload my own homemade wood turning video that contains bad information and shows unsafe lathe practices. I only mention this to point out that there is

There was a rod builder who often graced the pages of Rodmaker that impressed me like few others. Have not seen him around in years. His name was Joe Emig. Not only was he a tremendous craftsman but he also pioneered a great many new ideas and techniques. Is he still active? Not to overlook any others but he was the best I have ever seen. If his work looked as good in person as it did in the maga

That should be a durable coating. I have it on a compound bow and it has taken its share of abuse through the woods. Still looks fine.

I am sure both have their fans. I do know support can be helpful and with Visual Weave you have a company that is not only a sponsor here but which I believe is sold both by Mud Hole and Billy Vivona. So help is only a mouse click away. They were also at one of the big rod Expos a year or so ago. They may be there again. You would have to check the list of exhibitors on the event website for 201

Put the yellow down FIRST and then go back on the next coat and put the black over that. Dark over light, not light over dark. One works, the other does not.

As you increase the deflection amount the tip angle on the chart is also going to increase. Simple geometry dictates this will happen. So I am not sure what your point is here. All the numbers should have increased as the deflection amount increased and they did. There is only one AA figure for a rod blank and it is taken at the distance Tom mentioned. So the first set of numbers can be tossed

Here is what I do and it seems to stop any complaining or fussing later. 30-days unlimited warranty. I will replace any rod for whatever reason. 90-days warranty on defects in parts or workmanship ONLY. After that...... you own it no matter how many pieces you turn it into. NO warranty on anything beyond 90 days. I tell customers that a defective rod is going to break on one of the first few t

Not really a co-op but Clemens Tackle formed a buying club which allowed anyone to buy at either wholesale or less no matter what their level of business was. I think it cost $50 to join per year. So under the name of "B. Creed" or something, the club was launched, builders paid their $50, and then Clemens shut their doors. Nobody was ever able to find the "B. Creed" individua

How much heat are you talking about? I think most epoxies will handle temperatures in the 100F to 150F range without much trouble.

The amount of demand remains to be seen. With the advent of North Fork blanks made by people with the last name Loomis, versus ShiLoomis blanks that no longer carry any blank replacement warranty and which you cannot reproduce for a customer if he wants another, the demand may be a lot less than you think. The same thing has happened over the years with the Silflex and Fenwick Boron blanks, GUSA
