I may be wrong but 811 is alcohol based, is it not? So any paint that will not withstand alcohol will not work with 811 unless you left it dry very well. Water based paints may be affect by water based color preserver until they are very dry. Best to give the paint several days dry time before putting ANYTHING on them.

I am all for any sort of charitable work on behalf of the rod building hobby. But you have to be careful. The RM Library program is legitimate but what about the rest? The DAV program everyone was so excited about turned out to be much less than promised. As things have turned out I find it to be bordering on the edge of a scam. Just be careful. I have done this on a few rods. Both with insertions and over sleeves. On smaller rods I do not think there will be much difference. On larger and heavier rods I would go for the over sleeve every time. I would rather extend a shorter blank into a longer one, then cut a longer one into a short one. If that makes any sense.

I have sometimes wondered why you take the abuse that a few give you publically here when you remove the same type thing when they are aimed at others. Overall you should know you are doing things in the best manner possible. If not, then this board would not be the most often used by the custom rod builders. Stick to the rules because they have helped make this place what it is. Public forum

For most people the human eye is actually a poor tool to use for guide alignment. This is why rod builders with two good eyes still look for other and better methods of aligning guides. The string trick Tom mentions above is good because it gives the naked eye a reference point which makes it easier to see when a guide is not perfectly in line.
