Once you go past a certain number I doubt there is any added benefit to using many more guides.

Since there is no longer any blank warranty on the Loomis stuff and they are essentially close out blanks now, what sort of discounts will these be carrying?

33. Re: CCS Tool
A small take up rachet and spring scale should be all you need. If blank manufacturers are already using these type devices and they are available commercially, I would just obtain one of those and peel the scale off and attach one that had the CCS penny and-or ERN scale on it. Should not take long to plot the CCS scale on a specific scale. If this is for more powerful rods you really do not need

If a rod was only accurate when cast on the plane of the spine then you would be out of luck for any other cast that was made on any plane other than the spine. Same for the straightest axis too of course.
I would like to ask Lefty or Steve Rajeff their opinion on rod "tracking". If I run into one of the other at some point in the future I will.

Left Krey is a very accurate caster. I asked him once and he said his rods were built on the straightest axis. I believe he was using standard Sage equipment at that time. Steve Rajeff is an international casting champion many times over and the competitions he enters have an accuracy component. It is not all about distance, you have to be extremely accurate as well. His rods are also built so th

I cannot find anywhere that I said that anyone's rod, including Eugene's would be "a piece of crap." Please do not put words in my mouth, Scott. You have made an assumption that is not true. I did not say any such thing. I was certain that Eugene would neither attend or enter a rod, though and I did say that it would be wrong to assume anything about a person's ability to build a rod ba

You can call it a shot, I call it a matter of genuine interest and curiosity. Do you automatically assume that an engineer can build a rod that will outcast or outfish a rod built by an electrician? Would you assume that a rod built by a University Physics Professor will necessarily outcast, outfish, or somehow outdo a rod built by a plumber? Is a scientist guaranteed to build a better rod than a

Gene has carefully thought this out. I will be anxiously awaiting his entry. I can only imagine the technical superiority his rod will possess. If he cannot make it I do hope he will build a rod and send it along for someone there to cast. Reading his posts over many months now has really got me curious about how much better his rods must perform than most. One nice thing about doing something li

Drivel --- nonsense. I assess and measure based on results.
I had a local rod builder explain to me all the mechanics of casting and why his rods were superior to what I was building. I am just a building contractor, he is an engineer. We ended up fishing together a few months after that in a local tournament. When he cast his line sang like a barking dog and he could not get even decent dist

I would to watch such a thing. I think it would expose a lot of the drivel you read here and elsewhere and return some builders to this forum with much more credibility and others with, well, less.

You cannot break a rod in a location where it will just flex away under the load. This is why such load limit failures do not take place in the upper portions of the rod or at the ferrule. You have to reach the point where the blank strongly resists flexing before you can load it to failure.

43. New Delta
Just a mention that the new Delta Midi Lathe has been released. Woodcraft has it listed in their new sales flyer. It is a good looking unit and substantially larger than their previous unit but still just barely portable if you have a strong back.

There is a difference between a test and a competition. If you take two different rods and set them up with different guide combinations and find one casts further than the other, you do not have a test. You have a competition. To say that the casting difference was due to the guide set up on one would be incorrect as it is only one of several variables. I have no interest in setting up

Let us stop and back up a second here. I do not think we are talking about results based on blind faith. We are or should be talking about results based on at least semi scientific testing procedures, which did not take place. If you are asking me to have faith that a rod wrapped in spiral fashion will outcast a rod wrapped with the guides on top I am afraid I am going to have to ask for proof. I

No, I am being serious. And if you have followed the posts made by others who use ONLY braided line you will find some of them do exactly what I suggested.
How did you locate the choker guide on your rods prior to the 27X method being made available? That was all I asked. As a "free thinker" you must surely have had your own personal method that did not require following the use of e

47. Re: Line Path
Unless you rig up the different systems on the same blank--- not the same model but on the SAME blank, you would have no way of knowing if the increase in casting distance was due to one blank being slightly better suited powerwise to the casting weight being tossed. What they did was not a true "test" in any sense of the word.

You are way out of line. At long last he explained what he was wanting and I provided him with a method that will give even more of it to him especially is he uses braided line. If he will do what I suggested he will get even better balance and more sensitivity. He will lose some casting performance but he openly stated that casting distance was not his main priority.
You have openly stated th

For even more sensitivity try this- move the choker guide back to the butt guide location. Build it with all size 6 guides all the way out. This will get rid of all the larger guides and greatly increase your sensitivity.

You said it did not work on your rod but in reality your objection is strictly regarding how it looked, based on your subjective opinion, not on how it actually worked.
It will work very nicely. I have used it with reels larger than yours and it works great.

The line path from the top would not change. No. But the very slight deviation from straight due to the line having to pass the blank on one side would not be enough to really make any difference.
I have no idea why a good spiral built rod would outcast a good guides on top rod. In fact I am not sure that I can really believe that. I think they would come out about the same, give or ta

I would multiply 61.54 by 27 and take the total and then place the choker guide that far from the reel spool. And I would be confident that it would work very nicely.

You did not answer my question. The 27X method has only existed for about two years. BEFORE it came into being, how did you locate your choker guide? It would have been impossible for you to use 27X in any way prior to it being brought forth.
So before the 27X factor existed, you located your choker guide halfway between the reel spool upsweep intersect and where?

57. Re: Line Path
Once a fish is on the line the line path will never be straight. The rod itself will not be straight. It will be flexed and the line follows the rod. As the rod flexes, some of the systems that were less straight on the unflexed rod become more straight. For example, the simple spirals I have done actually become straighter and straighter as the rod is loaded and flexed more and more.
Forum: rodboard 14 years ago

Yes I already know that you incorporate the 27X factor. That was not my question.
Again, where did you locate the choker guide prior to the 27X factor being brought forward? Halfway between the reel spool upsweep intersect and where?

59. Re: Line Path
All the various lines I use are highly flexible. They do not require a perfectly straight path and as long as you keep the path relatively straight I doubt it matters by a tremendous amount. I am sure you can concoct a path that is so highly out of line that it causes some type of problem but within reason I would doubt it makes more than a very slight difference.
Just think what happens to yo

You say that you do not use the 27X method. I believe that you do. You said that you put your choker halfway between the 27X location and the spool upsweep intersect. So you are using 27X in your choker location.
Where did you locate your choker guide before 27X? Halfway between the spool upsweep intersect and where?
