the best thing to find is a woodworking store near you as well as woodturning clubs. you will be hard pressed to find something specifically designed for rodbuilding, but all we are doing is spindle turning. take a basic turning class at a woodworking shop and you will learn the basics of what you need Re: LOOKING FOR INFO ON TURNING WOODEN HANDLES

RodMaker Magazine has covered this topic in-depth, many, many times. In a very recent issue we even showed how to turn an oval or hammer handle shaped grip.
Grips are just spindles for the most part. Any wood turning DVD or book will give you the basics. ........... Re: LOOKING FOR INFO ON TURNING WOODEN HANDLES

Wood for handles or grips does not have to be stabalized. Stabalized wood is rarely used on the grips or handles, more often on reel seat inserts. delete

check out youtube. Nothing directly related to rod building, but you can find a few short how to videos on using a lathe, spindle turning. Until the rest of your videos and books come in. Re: LOOKING FOR INFO ON TURNING WOODEN HANDLES

Youtube can be helpful but you must be very careful with what you see there. It is not fact checked and often the things shown are completely lacking in any sort of standard safety practices. Remember, anyone can upload a video to Youtube. I can upload my own homemade wood turning video that contains bad information and shows unsafe lathe practices. I only mention this to point out that there is a vast difference between the treatises shown in the better magazines and books which have been checked for accuracy and safety and those that John Q. Public uploads to the internet. Use it for sure but remember that many if not most of the videos there were not submitted by practicing professionals. Just be careful when it comes to safety. I agree 100%.
When it comes to using any power tool or hand tool, read and abide by the safety instuructions. A lathe can be a killer if not used properly...and an x-acto blade can make for a bloody cross wrap and an expensive sewing job at the ER if not used safely. Some of the videos on youtube are scary.
