Sid ... What Tom said about the rubber hose is money <> Much better then tape We lathe mill all grip upper and lower assemblies on the blank for all of our two handed rods, and have done literally thousands this way. One stabilizer/roller on the reel seat, another in the field ... Male end secured to the power head using a three dog chuck. Our lathe bench has a jug full of vari

But epoxy can do that as well Bill ... We've eliminated that problem by only using clear coat over graphite <> No paint colors. Then even if a bit of the finish (never have seen it go down to fiber ?) comes with the guide all we need to do is buff out the scared area and re-coat with clear finish. In truth we do only our own warranty repairs, and 90% of the time it's actually more

Hi Bill, No I have not. The bottom line is I simply cannot do finish or adhesive epoxy work any longer. My partners and our apprentices do this now, but I still do the custom grip milling/assembly feather work, inscriptions etc. All of this entails the use of poly urethane finishes and adhesives. Ironically as it turns out, we are field testing the credibility of finishes like Deft

Duane, "It dries ready for epoxy in 4 hours at room temps for inlays, but if used for heavy thread weaves I'd suggest an overnight cure prior to epoxy. " "It has a viscosity similar to any of the milky CPs so we do not cut it, but it builds similar to a light epoxy. " This quoted from my post above. Yea Billy ... I knew I was going to get to that point with Guderod

Hi Bill, No I've not tried this for any rod building applications but I assume it would work in some aspects, but for us out-of-the can is best. In feather inlays we really need to flood the immediate area to position the feathers exactly where we want them, and also need 100% filament coverage to seal/fill the feathers. This to minimize bubble escapement at epoxy coverage ... Same true

Our shop does 5 to 6 hundred feather inlays a year on our custom rods, and we do color preserve many of our decorative thread wrap colors at the butt an ferrule details as well. For the past 15 years or so we have been dependent on Guderod 811 for this purpose ... We preferred this product as it was clear and water based <> Not milky like all other CPs. We prefer the clear as we can see

Jeremy, In this case I feel that you'll probably need to somehow compromise with your client to settle on an agreement ... Or eat this one. ... But <> Take the next step and in the future introduce two party contractual agreements with all of your clients. This works for our shop ... For two handed fly rods <> Make the length of both upper and lower grip assemblies proportionate to the length of the rod blank. Rule of thumb for the upper grip: Make a 12'0" upper grip length 12" <> Then add an inch = 13" total upper grip length. 14'0" blank = 15" total upper grip length. Rule of thumb for lower gri

Consider searching Toray carbon fiber. Check out the links and sub-links from this site base. We have found it to be a good answer source for questions that we have concerning whats happening today in carbon fiber technology. If one finds this sort of thing interesting ... Ah heck ... As long as I'm here today ... I have not read this thread, and not sure how the quote was taken from context ... Thought this should be said. We just had our annual shop visit with Mike Thorson <> Batson's product designer. Mike spent the entire day again at the shop working out the preliminaries for additional proprietary components for future generations of our two handed rods. Mikes knowledge of the rod building industry in general is amazing, and has proven time and again to be great asse

It's all good Charlie, Our main reason for experimenting with alternatives to epoxies as adhesives were alergy issues ... I carried quite a pit of experience with poly adhesives from the construction trades so researched them for composite tube usage as well. If done correctly the two were quit compatable. What Mark and Bill have said ... ... We have been using poly adhesives for over 5 years now as have 3 other regional shops ... This for untold thousands of rods for both grip and reel seat assembly. I was skeptacle at first as well <> But the stuff is awesome. Compared to two part epoxies: We have found the assembly process to be faster, far less messy, less expensive, Amine free

Don Lukehart, You bring up a very valid question. Switch rods are short two handed fly rods. All short two handed fly rods are in essence shooting head rods. Two handed shooting head line systems for short two handed fly rods are (by need) rather short in head length, all with compact grain distribution within their tapers. This means that the lines best utilized will have large di

Chris, I suggest that you do exactly as Bill and Tom recommend If your are hyper allergenic to epoxies: Advice such as using goggles, masks, latex gloves etc. will not help in the least. From your described reactions I'd suggest that you stay away from all epoxies entirely, and consult with your physician. I've been dealing with this scenairo for over 15 years <> But still run

Paul, Fly rod families are best defined as either single handed or two handed. Two handed fly rods offer the caster the assistance of the lower hand, single handed fly rods do not. Switch rods offer the assistance of the lower hand in line delivery. For this reason, switch rods fall into the family of two handed fly rods. Actually any single hand fly rod can perform a change of di

Gary, Depending on the taper <> Removing 8 to 10 inches from the butt end of a two handed fly rod could dramatically alter the targeted flex and power intended for this rod. Most two handed fly rods can have rather complex tapers: They are often meant to be use specific, with tapers designed for efficient delivery of various families of two handed line systems. Removing that much
