Hello, A customer wants a 12' 2 piece casting rod built to use for float (river bobber) fishing. Casting isn't as much of a concern as line payout as this will be a boat rod. I typically use the simple spiral (90* bumper to 180* runners) for bass rods which are typically 1 piece and a lot shorter. My question is, would the simple spiral still work; what are the pros and cons; would a 60*, 120*

I have been researching the various methods of the spiral wrap and I like the simple spiral but on the 7' bass bait-casting rod I am building with micro guides the line was very close if not touching the rod as I loaded ithe rod to test placement. I moved the stripper guide less than 10 degrees off of top dead center and it made all the difference. So my question is, does that stripper guide hav

Greetings once again. i've added a new blank to my salmon rod arsenal. I received in record time the North Fork Composites salmon G.Loomis back bouncing blank SBB 809-1 (IM) this is the largest of that model. the matter of sturdy long lasting guides concerns me. previously i have built up the g.loomis GL2 bb964, adding 6" to the butt as i intend to do with this new 809-1 blank since

I read about the alignment tool - great, but I have one question. the last guide from the tip, is it aligned directly with the tip guide, or still spiraling (I guess you would say) toward the tip of the rod. I have a friend that would like me to make one for him and have never done this before. Thanks

Good morning everyone, I am French, so please, excuse my bad american ^^ I am building an XH casting skipping rod with Spiral wrap for a customer who wants to fish with frogs in X- Heavy cover, so I think you can help me. The rod blank is 5'6" length (Batson RX7 IMB 785 which on I will cut 10 inches from the butt). It is a Mag taper rod blank, so I shouldn't loose a lot of backbon

Ron; Sorry for the delay, have had much on my plate. Col. Thanks for the reminder Since you’ve not worked with Micro’s before, I would suggest starting with 3mm before stepping down to smaller size running guides on future rods. It takes a bit to train your fingers working with the small sizes. And #3’s are a good training ground. Below is a good starting point for spacing when work

132. Spine
So, while building my rod, I was playing around with my Sages and a TFO and noticed that the guides seem to be wrapped on a 90 from the spine. Is this my imagination or does this sound right? It makes sense in a way because most people including me, at least when throwing shorter casts, seem to throw with the rod at a bit of an angle Am I correct? I ended up putting mine on the inside of the

I'm having some trouble convincing myself that a simple spiral wrap on CalStar GFX700L blank is appropriate. This blank shuts off so early that spacing between the stripper (BMNAG 20) and first 180 guide (BMNAG 8) is well beyond 12 inches... which spawns my insecurities. To be honest, I've never crafted a rod this stiff in the butt section... which feeds my insecurities. And I've never wrapped a

I have seen the carrot sticks with the micro guides and they apparently still have not adopted the concept of the spiral wrap for the baitcasting-type reels. I did notice that they have 12 micro guides, including tip-top, on a 7' rod. Is this customary for this type of set-up? I want to incorporate the spiral wrap so would I need less guides in this instance? Any suggestions on a 7"

I want to build a acid rod, or spiral wrapped rod. I want to use the seeker rod blank model CJBF70 or the Rainshaddow Forecast model RCJB78MH. I will be using an Avet LX reel, with 30# mono topshot . I need to know what type of casting guide sizes, and the basic ball park spacing. I will static test the rod and do adjustments. I have a wheel that help you get the angles. If you have a build

When you wrap a spiral wrap do you need to have a bumper guide in there? I just layed down some guides on a rod and used a 1/4" turn method that brought the 4th guide directly under the blank. Test cast were very smooth. If I look through the first guide I can see threw the holes of the next 3 guides at an angle leading to the bottom of the blank. From there I spaced out evenly the rest of t

Hi, I am in the process of building a second spiral wrap rod and I have a couple of questions to ask you guys before I can proceed. First, some spiral wrap methods call for the stripper guide to be offset to the side of the rod's blank to keep the line from winding on one side of the reel only, I understand its purpose but what about if you're using a reel with a level wind that does all the

Hello, This is my first post here, i'm from Florida and heavily involved in shark fishing. Before i ask my question, i would like to mention that this is would be my first rod build and your help is really appreciated. I got an older 8'.3" seeker blank,(i don't have the model number) rated at 80-130lb fast action, and i would like to build it for casting and shark fishing. The butt of

I know this isn't rod building related, but figured I would ask here since some rods have cord wrapped grips. I have a friend that wants a grip wrapped on a walking staff. The staff is round and the grip area is about 12" long. I could do a simple wrap for him, but thought a cross wrap would really look nice, and add some grip. Have any of you done a cross wrap in cord, and if you have,

I am looking for the guide spacing for a Fenwick 8'3" blank in casting mode circa 1982-1985. I built a boron x blank at that time with alot of guides as per the Fenwick rodbuilding catalog in 1983. I remember 10 or 11 guides. The rod was lost out of a boat on the way to a boat ramp in 1998 and I have finally found another blank. Anyone out there have an old sizing chart? The Fenwick peo

i just had a question if it is recommended to spiral wrap a parabolic blank. specifically, it is the 350g jigging master blank. also, i have only done one spiral wrap so it is a fairly new concept to me. should i use simple spiral or revolver method? i tried looking into the physics of this but that just made my head hurt. any input is appreciated.

Its been a while since I posted as i have been out of rodbuilding for about a year. I am back up and going now and am about to attempt my first bass rod with micro guides and have several questions. Does normal static stress guide placement methods apply? Can these guides be used in conjunction with a simple spiral wrap? and if so... what pitfalls should I watch for in doing this? This phorum

Until now I've built mostly spinning and centerpin steelhead rods, however for my next project I'd like to build a 13'6" casting float rod. I'm considering utilizing a spiral wrap on this rod due to it's length and action. My question is, on a moderate action med/light power rod could I get a way with a simple spiral or would a blank such as this require a slower transition? If I'm bette
