Hello,
A customer wants a 12' 2 piece casting rod built to use for float (river bobber) fishing. Casting isn't as much of a concern as line payout as this will be a boat rod. I typically use the simple spiral (90* bumper to 180* runners) for bass rods which are typically 1 piece and a lot shorter. My question is, would the simple spiral still work; what are the pros and cons; would a 60*, 120*, 180* work better for keeping the line of the blank and for smoother transitions? I'm thinking double foot for the stripper guides and single for the bumper and runners. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated, Steve Re: Spiral wrap for 12' casting/float rod

The Simple Spiral will work. Rod length is not really an issue and because there are no transition guide/s on the SS, you get a straighter line path under load.

Simple spiral should work fine. Make sure you check the line path on the bumper guide under load so that you don't get side pressure on the guide. You might have to adjust the bumper guide a bit off from the 90 degree mark, or change the position of the next runner guide slightly to get the line moving at the bottom of the guide.
