Getting ready to spiral wrap my first rod. Does anyone have a guide spacing chart for spiral wrap ( as a starting point ) or do you use the same guide spacing and just make the transition around the rod?

I am a novice builder and have been wanting to spiral wrap the guides. I was just wondering for what application(s) should spiral wrapping guides be used for OR not used for? Any advice on the subject would be appreciated. Also which is the best way to do a spiral wrap? I know of a couple different ways to do it but everyone has their own way and would like to hear everyone's opinion. Oh, a

I'm not a big fan of spiral setups, not from a functional perspective, they just look goofy to me. But, I was wondering, since the second guide is intended mostly to just keep the line off the blank, so a really low guide is recommended, would a guide ring of the proper size glued to the blank in the half way position between the 0 degree guide and the 180 degree guide, work ok? Anyone tried th

Aloha everyone. I am about to make my 1st custom rods. I have been practicing thread wrapping, inlays, applying finish ext on some older broken rods i had for about a week. The reason i have decided to build a custom rod is because no main stream rod company makes a rod for what i do. I fish for pelagic from my kayak in hawaii, targeting 100+ pound fish, YFT, Wahoo, Mahimahi, Marlin, GT's

Hi Everyone, I want to try a 6 axis 3D chevron. My blank is 50 mm. Circum..(there is no taper on this part of the rod) I have an under wrap of 180 mm in length. I have read custom thread art/advanced custom rod building- I understand that the spacing (center to center) for a single wrap is the same as the circumference and for a double wrap it is 1/2 the circumference. Question 1. What is it

Hi All - Long time reader, first time posting. I have built a few rods over the years. All were strictly utilitarian, with the fanciest having trim bands on the guide wraps 8 ) . I am gathering the components to build up a Coho trolling rod on a Rainshadow RDR86M blank using the Batson Blueprint as a starting point. I want to dress this one up just a bit so have been practicing some more e

for a one piece 7' rod how quickly should the rotation from top to bottom should the spiral take place? currently the first guide is tapped on at 24" from the bottom with an 8" space between the other guides that wrap to the bottom of the rod. It looks nice but in terms of functionality I am guessing. I used the "search" function of this site but could not find any pertinen

Hey guys so I am interested in making a spiral wrap rod. I have tried googling, but my issue is that there are a lot of different types of wraps, and some have different names for the same one. So if I am mainly making rods at the moment for freshwater bass fishing, what would you say are the main wraps I need to research and learn more about? Also how should one go about deciding if I should

OK so as I understand it the simple spiral does not have any transition guides. the bumper guide is only there to keep the line off the rod blank as the line shoots past the blank to one side. correct? so here's what I'm thinking, since the bumper guide does not direct or transition the line, can I just leave it off and put a thread wrap coated with PG in that spot? that would give the line somet

I know that mono and braid does not pile up to one send on a level wind reel when using spiral wrapped guides. Any problems with wire line piling up? I dont think there should be but looking for someone who has experience with wire line and spiral wrapped guides just to be sure. thanks buzz

First, let me preface this post by saying that I realize this may not be ideal, or even a good idea, I just want to know if it will work well enough to try the idea out. OK. So, I have a relatively inexpensive 2 piece casting rod that I would like to try an acid wrap on. What I was thinking was to strip the second and third guides (away from the reel) off, reorient the tip-half of the rod 180*, t

I am using a seekers blank GTS60XH rated 80/100 LB and I have decided to use wrap it with a simple spiral. Did any of you guys have some previous experience with this blank setting? I am planning to use this set of guides : Alps BXNGZG inc Tip 20,16,12,12,10,10,10 (8mm bumper guide) 10

Hi folks, I'm planning my first casting rod and will spiral the guides. Not sure whether it will be "simple + bumper" or "willie wrap" style but I'll decide that detail after I have the stripper and runners taped on and do some experimentation. Regardless, I'm wondering which guide type will be best for the bumper/transition and first 180 guide. If I use one KWAG7 for stripp

Hello Everyone. Well I did not receive as much interest as I would have wished(only 6, unless you count me then 7) so any thought of getting any door prizes together is not likely. The three questions we need to vote on are: 1: Date, so far we have: end of April to middle of May, May 3rd, and late May. 2: Lunch, so far we have: Hot Dogs, Pizza, and Snacks or Sandwiches. 3: Seminar

Hi, I am wrapping guides for the first time on a fly rod. I am having difficulty with getting the thread to wrap. The blank I have has a gloss finish on it from the manufacture and the thread slips. I have loosen the tension on the thread I have increased the tension slowly to the opposite extreme. I have considered lightly scoring the gloss finish just like when I installed the grip and seat. S

I have built a couple fluke rods with spirals and now I want a striper/cod rod with spiral. I heard that it mite "pull" the 2nd guide off the blank since the pressure will be on the side of the insert. does this happen with the heavier rods? I try to transition the line fast to the underside so I tend to use less guides. for fluke rods its not bad but just curious about the heavier rods

Hey guys, have been asking around about the seeker hercules specifically the 6' H and XH and most of everything I had run across had been very positive, that they were durable, sensitive, light, and could handle a whole lot of drag. In my search I went on 360 tuna and have found threads upon threads bashing the blanks claiming breakages etc. Most of these threads seem to be stirred up by one

I have built several rods using the simple spiral wrap with bumper guide, and several using the 0, 60, 120, 180 degree method. With the later, I placed the butt guide and did a static guide test. I placed the guides where they should go according to the static test. The second, third, and fourth guides from the butt I then placed at the 60, 120, and 180 degree position. In reading some of t

About 3 weeks ago I built a rod for a friend. Yesterday he sent me a picture of the decorative wrap that shows a clean break in the epoxy all the way around the rod and both sections of epoxy separated by about 1/8 inch. The rod finish underneath appears to be undamaged. The break in the epoxy is directly over the point where two colors of thread meet. I hate to assume, but I can't help but t

Building a 7'3" heavy power bass frogging rod, I have a 7 double foot 20.5" off the face of my revo STX at an angle of about 10 degrees to the right followed by a 4.5 Fuji belly guide at 95 degrees to the right, and finally another belly guide at 180. I payed them out by using a straight line path from the reel to the 180 guide. I did some test casting and under pressure retrieves, all

I just want to know if anybody used these guides on a UL blank, for throwing very tiny lures, like 1/32-1/16 with realy thin mono line? My main concern would be that if the line will or will not sticking to the blank when is wet,due to the "hight" of these really tiny guides...affecting drasticly the casting distance. Talking strictly in terms of some very light lures.

Hi everybody, I have a few questions about the difference between the "revolver" and bumper wrap method. I believe a revolver wrap means that you would start with the stripper guide at 180, then the next guide at 90, then the next at 45 and fourth at zero. (please forgive me if my definition is wrong). Secondly the bumper method as i have sen it defined is the stripper guide at 180, t

I have been reading for the last few weeks to get set up to build my first rod. I have replaced a few guides in the past, and have experience with a lathe as well as general wood working, including using epoxy as a finish on lures. I have decided on a Tackle Industries blank, I know there are not many people using them, but I have several of their rods and like them. I also like that I can get a
