Hey guys, it's been a while since I've done a spiral wrap and can't seem to find my notes of my last one.. I was going to do 10 at zero 8 at 90 and use 6's at 180 or are any of you having luck with micro running guides?

All, I am building my first 2 rods ever. 1st is a CRB 50-100lb class rod and a black hole cape cod special 450g rod. I have been practicing on the CRB and then doing the Black Hole blank. I am now at the point of guide placement, which I want to be acid wrapped. I don't have a clue how to find the correct guide placement. Any help would be appreciated. Also of note, the CRB is a moderate fast

Tom, Thank you for reprinting Volume 5, Issue #6 in the current RodMaker Magazine. It is no wonder it is the best-seller of all issues with its in-depth background, information, suggestions and qualified assistance from Ian, Mike and Tom. Those, such as me, who are relatively new to the site and magazine, now have access to the wealth of information contained within that article. I now have the

2 Questions regarding simple spiral. 1) If my guide train goes: butt guide #10, and first 180 #8, and then running guides are #6 is it ok that the bumper guide (between butt guide & first 180) is a size #6 or should it be an #8 to follow the sizing? If the line goes from a small guide like a #6 to a #8 or even a #10 and back down to a #6 is that a problem? 2) When i lay out the simple s

Is the blank affected in a negative way by the spiral wrap load? For instance my setup has (slow spiral) Guide at 0 degrees (load coming straight down/to the blank) Guide @45 degrees (line is contacting guide to the blank) Guide @115 degrees (line is contacting guide to the blank) Guide @135 degrees (line is contacting guide away from the blank) Guide @180 degrees (line is contacting guide

Just wondering if anyone has only used three guides to transition around the blank. I am also wondering if I should use the same size guides for the spiral wrap. Guide charts show me staring with a size 12 guide. I have seen in articles with starting at zero with first guide. Has anyone started at 10 degrees.and went to 60, 120, and 180.

The question is do I spiral wrap or not? I am leaning on not. The rod will be built using a NFC backbounce blank. I will be fishing mostly bucktails, spinnerbaits and stickbaits. Most of the time the tip will be down. Does it make sense to spiral wrap it? Appreciate your opinions.

Hi guys I am going to build my first spiral wrapped rod, how do I pick which guides to use. I was thinking of getting this kit will this kit work? I was also wondering how do I go about laying out the guides for starting the spiral? I know I will have to static test to place the rest of the guides. Thanks for the help.

Hi guys. I am getting ready to start a new build for myself. I was thinking about doing a spiral wrap on a rod, I kind of understand the concept a little. My question is what is the advantage of a spiral wrap vs just making a spinning rod. Any advice or input on making a spiral would be greatly appreciated so I can gain more information on this type of build. Thanks Jusitn

Plan to build a couple deep crank rods using RX6 FT905 blanks and the guide spacing provided from Batson (CB76MH). Budget components for reel seat and EVA grips in hopes to keep them each less than $100 each. Looking for some guidance on a light but dependable (KR concept) guide set for fluorocarbon lines, any recommendations? Thanks. PS, only doing 3 builds this winter, doing more ice fishing

This winter, I'll have an inordinate amount of free time on my hands for the first time in eons and I want to rewrap my favourite rod, an original Helium LTA 7' MF. Just about the only thing I ever have tied onto this rod is a weightless fluke with a Steez/SV105 spool. I want to go with a lower profile guides set, but I need it to pass a 20# braid to 10# leader knot, likely an Alberto 90% of the

Was thinking of attempting my first spiral wrapped pitching rod for my own personal use. What are some things I should take into account with this rod, regarding setup and placement of the guides. I know I will need to static test, just looking to get a starting point from which to start with. Any guides that people prefer to use with this setup. Last, with this guide setup would most still o

Hey everyone, I know there are a ton of threads on here on spiral wrapping. And I have read many of them describing the different spiral wrapping methods and techniques, but still have some questions on guide sizing. I am building an 8' xh saltwater rod that the blueprint states the guides to be used are 25,20,16,12,10,10,10,10,10. However I am not sure if I would need to change the guide sizes f

Found this site through google. Great information ya'll have built up here. My son is what got me into this. I offered to get him a custom built rod for his 18th birthday. He decided he'd rather for us to try and build some. So made a order for everything. Cutting our teeth on a 8.0 medium heavy fast crank bait rod. MHX blank CB965.. Cork handle and reel seat done. Now for the guides. There mic

I keep seeing videos of people that made a spiral wrap on their rods. Why do they use like 6 guides real close to each other to move the line 180?

I'm going to be having a 6'6'' E glass fishing rod wrapped for wireline jigging striped bass, in the North East. Is having it spiral wrapped while using wire (60lb) out of the question? If not, can anyone recommend a size 16 roller tip for this rod? Thank you very much!

Hi folks, I was just curious if anybody knew what kind of spiral wrap Gary loomis does on his new brand edge rods? I have seen s few and they seem to be a slow transition compared to a 'simple spiral' or Roberts wrap. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

And a glorious, good day to all. While gathering the needed supplies, information and courage to attempt building my first spiral wrap rod for live bait fishing off the SoCal coast, I was reading Lynn Behlar’s post “ Low frame double foot guides” from about a week ago and the replies within. It was obvious to many he was looking for an appropriate, if not the ultimate, bumper guide for a spiral

Has anyone created a blank for conventional reels which had an opening in the fore grip or the adjacent blank through which the line could pass directly into a guide train on the underside of the blank? Such an opening could be engineered so that it would not weaken the blank in the least and would provide the same benefits as a spiral guide configuration in a much neater arrangement.

Hi to all you happy wrappers, and even the grumpy ones if there are any. While I am rather conservative in the way I approach most things, particularly fabricating in which I include rod building, I also realize the importance and benefits modern technology. But as with all aspects of life there are checks and balances, and the majority of the time to gain on one side of the scale results in a l

I have gone over to wrapping all my saltwater rods using the simple spiral with the bumper guide. I don't really feel these rods are casting as well as the ones I had with conventional guide set up. Has anyone noticed this also or am I just crazy?

Found a neat little tool to find the center of rod blanks. The pro's on this site probably already know about it or have a different method but I thought it was worth mentioning. I found it at and drilled out the center hole to about 3/16" to accommodate the china marker lead. Just slide it up the blank to make a mark where your guides are laid out. Bill

Hello all. This is my first post here. I am a newbie rod builder, have only wrapped a few guides so far, for practice. I am about to start a couple of builds, one being a Daiwa Saltiga Ballistic 35-405. I have been researching this for the past 6 months or so, accumulating materials and tools, etc. I want to build this as a spiral wrap. Selecting guides not knowing much ab

I'm building a 500 gram jigging rod and want to do it spiral. This will be my first spiral wrapped rod and I have a question about the transition. I've read several articles and comments about transitions and still don't know what style will be best. The rod will be used for deep dropping in the Norfolk Canyon and jigging tuna. It is a Bushido blank (BVJ58500) and the reel I plan on using is
