I see that some rode are epoxied from above the butt to the tip, and some
are done over the wraps on the guides and butt wrap alone. Now I
understand that epoxy affects the action of the blank. This particular rod is a heavy boat rod
the old type with a wooden butt. So my question is this, if I did want to epoxy the
. entire rod from butt wrap up do I just do the the thread work now, then

I just stripped a spinning rod built on earlier US made Batson RX7 (charcoal). I am going re-build this into a casting rod.
When I removed old guides the blank coating has also peeled off and it doesn't look good. So I am going to remove the coating completely.
What would be the best method to remove the coating without damaging the blank?
Thanks

I am doing a few heavy saltwater rods and for the first time i will be doing underwraps. My question is this. I will wrap the underwraps and apply a coat of finish. In a few days i will wrap the guides over the underwraps that have been finished. Do i need to scuff up the finish on the underwraps to help the new coat adhere better?

I have been asked to refinish an old graphite Fenwick fly rod. After inspecting the wraps, they appear ok. The finish on the wraps is about gone. What is the best way to proceed ? My thoughts were to wipe down the rod and simply recoat the thread wraps, then clean and sand the cork grip? I've never done a dedo so I would appreciate any advice ? Thanks.

Never used this stuff before...
A. What kind of solvent works?
B. I'm just touching up the clear coat on a blank where some guides were relocated from. Will it work in just those areas as a touch up and be relatively unnoticeable or should I just do the whole blank?
Thanks again!!

Has anyone here ever re-finished a white blank using tinted Permagloss to change the blank color? If so, and if you have photos, I would love to see some, as I am considering such a project myself and am curious to see what results can be achieved. If you don't want to post them on here, you can email them to me. I would be most grateful. I tried searching the photo archives here but didn't have

46. Sage re-build
I'm looking for some help with a Sage RPL 8'6" 5 wt. 2 pc
First of all, I picked up this custom built rod used. The blank looks to be in great condition but the guides are less than desireable and are not located correctly. I would like to strip the rod and rebuild it from the cork up.
Could someone point me in the right direction for guide spaceing on this particular rod? Also I've

A friend of mine dropped off two of his prized rods for me to replace the guides on. They are St. Croix blanks, and the guides were severely rusted. I have removed all guides and had to sand " lightly " some of the areas where the guides sat (with 400 grit) due to the staining from the rust. How would I polish the entire blank to get that new look, without damaging the blank itself?

I am stripping a rod for a re wrap and there was no CP used so the epoxe goes through the thread to the blank. I may want to relocate a couple of guides and the blank will need a lite sanding to remove all traces of old epoxe. After sanding and removing all old epoxe can I use a product like Krylon clear lacquer or spray Varathene to restore the gloss to the blank in these areas? What would you u

There are a lot of horizontal scratches on it. I removed the guides and just a little epoxy/coating left. This is my fisrt crack at refinishing any rod.

53. So what now?
I have stripped down an old rod I am trying to redo from scratch. My question is, now that I am down to a blank, what next? I scraped most of the glue and epoxy off with a heat gun, but there is still glue residue and spots where the blank finish has been taken off. Do I sand down the entire blank with some fine sand paper, clean w/ Acetone, and spray lacquer to get that new blank finish back on

56. Refinishing Rod
I'm refurbishing a 9' Eagle Claw fiber glass rod for a buddy. I have the guides removed and I'm now down to the dirty work of removing the finish.
My Question. Should I redo the thread wraps on the handle, female ferrule, etc.? They are in perfect condition. My buddy says he doesn't care if the thread is a perfect match as long as I replace the guides.

Hi
Starting to repair a 20 year old fibreglass 2 piece 12 foot DAM rod, the paint has been scratched and chipped off over the years, what do I need to do to repair/repaint this rod. I've read the articles on Refinishing a rod blank and on the water break free process. I'm putting new guides and extending the butt on a very old rod, one that I'll use just for down rigger fishing for trout and kokanee. I don't want to put the money for a high end automobile urethane into this rod, has anyone had any experience in a color coat other than what the article talks about? Any help w
