271. rod refinishing
I'm presently stripping down 2 rods which have been badly chipped by much use. The original coating seems to be quite thick. It is coming off well with the use of 600 grit sand paper. The new guides will be placed at different locations than the old ones and the blank is definitely different colors.(seems to have faded in some stops). I was thinking of coating the blank again prior to wrappin

I have a rod I built several years ago that has been used very heavily ever since. It has on it a wood slide ring seat(struble D-2)well, now it seems that the varnish or whatever it is on it is flaking off and the wood is getting sort of grey. is there anything I can do to rejuvnate it? I hate to cut it off and replace it as it is on a 2-wt pac-bay blank and is glued very well, and I don't want

274. rod refinishing
Hope someone can give me some advise. A friend asked me if I could possibly redo 2 rods for him and I said I would give it a shot. He wants to use these rods for wire line trolling but doesn't want to use roller guides. Any suggestions? Also, the entire rod blank had been coated and is now chipped and of course the spaces where the guides used to be. Any suggestions on which type of rod res

275. 5000th Post!
Sometime early tomorrow, Rodbuilding.Org will receive its 5,000th posted message! That works out to about 1,000 per month or 225 per week or 32 posts per day. Not bad for a 5&1/2 month old website on rod building.
The reason I bring this up is to remind everyone of the wealth of information contained in the archives. Every post ever made is still there, waiting for those who may at some

Hey everyone thank you for all your help!
Im restoring a 7.5' 2 piece bamboo rod. I have reglued any
delaminated segments ,stripped all the components and sanded the old finish off.
My question is do I varnish the blank before I install the guides and then finish the wraps seperate or is the proper procedure to install guides and then varnish every thing together ?
Also, should I use a mari

I am fairly new to rod building (have built 2 fly rods). A friend of mine has asked me to repair/refurbish several Salt water rods. These rods are used in Alaska for halibut and salmon fishing out on the ocean. The primary problem is the guide wraps are coming loose and the finish is cracked or peeling. Are there any books available that detail how to refurbish these rods? Nothing fancy, just rem

I was just given an old Lamiglas 12'surf blank (1 piece)that has no finish, paint or anything on it past the old butt wrap. The blank appears to have been worked on previously and has no guides. The rod has the outside fibers slicking up everywhere giving it a very fuzzy appearance and feel. The rod is dark brown in color and the wrap lines very distinct. The fibers are fiberglass I'm sure and

I HAVE SOME COLOR PIGMENT FOR EXPOXY BUT I WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD USE THIS WITH POLYURETHANE FINISHES. FOUND A NICE SUPPLY OF UNFINISHED BLANKS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO COLOR. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR INPUT.

I have a little 6' 2wt flyrod that was my first rod ever built and have rewrapped many times and used it for all kinds of experiments. It has some sentimental value but really needs to be sanded down completely (repositioned the guides too many times) and refinished. What is the best method for application of finish and what finish is most desirable for this situation. I planned on turning it

284. Scratches
Hi,
I'm in the process of rebuilding a rod and have some deep scratches in the finish (Pier Rash). How does one fill or hide a deep scratch. It's only in the finish. I was thinking of using Flexcoat or LS or U40 rod bond to fill and sand then applying Permagloss to the whole blank. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in Advance
John
