I was wrapping a rod for a co-worker who will hit the big 75 this weekend, placed the rod in my room which is warmer than the others this time of year.
Here we go, went to watch tv and had the rod up against the dresser after three hours on the dryer. one of the dogs brushed against it and it fell on top of my wifes gigantic teady bear, when I noticed this it was stuck to the bear, so needl

I have read several posts relating to refinishing and rebuilding rods. Recently I saw a post about scraping, sanding a rod and then using permagloss for finish. My question is do you have to sand and scrape the the entire blank or just the areas that need it, i.e ferruls and former locations of the guides. Also can I use the flex coat finish in place of the permagloss or are they two different

I started out by refinishing an old Montague boat rod for my dad for Christmas. He loved it. I couldn’t find the original style of thread, but it still turned out nice. Man this stuff is fun!!! My dad made a wrapper for me as a Christmas also. Thanks to JP Timberlake for showing me how to wrap guides. Thanks also goes to Larry Tysinger for letting me use his dryer. Also thanks goes to Tom Kirkm

94. Lost Back Issue
Well, I was reading an old issue of RM on the plane to PHL last night, and eventually snoozed off - not because of the magazine, but because, as usual, a 1-3/4 hr flight turned into a 4hr adventure (welcome to Useless Air and PHL- the worst possible combination you can get in modern air travel). As luck would have it, I left the magazine on the plane. Trying to recover it, because I'd already l

I am refinishing a 37+ year old fiberglass rod. In the process of trying to "clean up" the finish under the old guides, I ended up removing enough paint to expose the blank. The blank is so nice looking that I decided to remove all of old the paint. I want to maintain the look of the unfinished blank. Do I need to put any coating at all on the blank? Is there a coating that will pr

Hi. I have refinished a rod nearly one year ago with permagloss. I first prepared the surface with scothcbrite and put on two thin coats of permagloss. It was perfect, but now I can see some little areas where it tend to peel (some little spots where it bump on), and with a little pressure of plastic tool it completely peel off from the first original finish of the blank. What can I do now ? Must

I have a vintage 60's Wright & McGill "Green Hornet" 4wt, 7.5' glass rod that I love. I let it sit in a damp case overnite recently (duh!) and the brown finish has become discolored in some areas. How were these rods finished and do any of you have any suggestions on how to refinish/touch up the rod??
Thanks for any hints you can share...

98. rod finish
I've researched the topic on here in the past discussions and am still a little hazy about what to do. But I plan on refinishing a blank. I read the topic about the pvc T joint with the rubber across each end filled with the finish. This seems messy and hard to do. Is there any easier way to do it? Maybe on a rod dryer or dipping it? And if i were to color the blank would autobody spray pa

I now own a craftsman wood lathe 1hp and I was planning on using it to turn grips and to turn unfinished blanks to sand them down. I've seen the universal rod chucks but is there any other way to rig it up. also is this the same thing you would use to accept the mandrels. or do they come with an attachment.

100. Varnish vs Urathane
Because of the plethora of esoteric information bantered about on certain topics I was wondering if I might get an answer to this question?
I'm refinishing a rod that I found that had been submerged and was covered with algee. I've removed the guides (huge, heavy and only 5 on a 6' rod) and cleaned the rod the best I can and as soon as I figure out how to remove the handle/reel seat (I think

Although I know people that wear them deer hunting. I found another use for them. I cut off a section of one leg, folded it into about a 2 1/2" square and applied PG to a rod blank I was refinishing. I think it worked better than a coffee filter or a sponge. Just wondering if anyone has tried this.

103. Loomis GLX
Just got a Loomis GLX blank. Very nice blank however, the finish is strange. It looks to be scuffed along the entire length. Is this normal? I almost looks as though it needs refinishing.
Has anyone had any experience with these blanks? Are they super delicate or can they withsatnd normal boat use.
I am usually pretty careful with my gear. I have a set of Cermets for this rod so it will be

A friend of mine wanted me to rebuild an old rod that his Grandfather had give him. This is a 5"10" Fiberglass rod with a 27 inch wooden grip. The foregrip had old red thread on it, I have removed the thread from the foregrip and replaced it with D thread. The foregrip runs down at a fairly steep angle. Will the epoxy level when in the dryer? I have not had any experience with refin

107. Refinishing rods
I am planning to rebuild an older graphite rod of mine. I plan on shortening it from 7 ft to about 6'3'' so i would be re doing all the guide placements. So I figure to remove all of the finish from around the guide feet i would need to not sand but use a 3M scouing pad to remove what is stuck on...also the blank is pretty scratched up...So to refinish one in a different color all together what

108. Expo
Booth contracts from @#$%& and American Tackle were in the mail this morning. That brings the number of exhibitors to 37 as of today, June 29th. Exactly 52 booths have now been sold. I suspect the remaining 23 booths will be gone by mid-July.
Advance tickets are selling briskly, but I would remind everyone that we won't run out and the ticket lines last year moved smoothly and swiftly. Bec

109. Expo Update
Contracts from Mud Hole, American Tackle and St. Croix were in the morning's mail. The exhibitor's list is nearly complete.
Last Wednesday I met with staff at the Showplace to go over the new floor plan. We'll be able to get 75 booths on the exhibit hall floor without reducing aisle space or changing the seminar room locations. Even a full 7 months out, the ICRBE is already larger than anyt

I have been given an old blank to refinishing, this rod was used in salt water all its life and a good bit of the 6ft length is in a beautiful wooden handle. , the blank appears to be fiberglass, it has a yellow color to it, and is translucent to a point where you can see the fibers. My question is can I strip the guide, and use Permaglos to get a finish. Or can you use Permaglos for a fiberg

Often my wife asks me what I am doing on the computer so long and I tell her I am studying or doing my homework assignment. My current project is about done and I thought I would share it with you b

I have a surf rod butt section that I am changing/replacing the grips on. During this process, I have decided that I want to shorten the foregrip length. The "problem" is that I made a decorative butt wrap at the top of the original foregrip. Before I made the butt wrap, I scuffed up the area under the butt wrap with a scotchbrite to get good results with finish "adhesion".

Also how to apply it so it looks more prfessional with no streaks. Are there a variety of colors? Finally, do I need to put some sort of clear protective finish on top of it? Thanks for your help. I have a 4oz bottle of permagloss. Only about 1/2oz gone so far.
We have gotten along just fine until tonight. I cracked the plastic cap that goes on the glass bottle. I placed the cap back on, taped aroound the cap and bottle to "seal" it as best as I could do. I turned it upside down to let a little get down around the crack and hopefully find enough moisture to harden and seal th
