Hi folks, I' am refinishing an older fibatube (Hardy line of blanks) spinning/casting rod. Guides are off, handle has been refurbished. Now I sanded down the old glossy coating and replaced it with 3 layers of U-40 Permagloss urethane finish. For whaterver reason I have lots of dust particles on the blank which are giving the whole story a bad surface feel (so small that you can not see mo

G'day Guys, Well I've sort of rectified my previous problems with refinishing a blank. I couldn't easily get hold of Krylon Fusion so decided to use Tamiya PS paint. Its quite good stuff and is available in a wide range of colurs including metallics. I sprayed 2 coats on the blank and it turned out nicely. Last night I decided to coat with Permagloss. Unfortunately the solvent in the Permag

G'day Guys, I need some more help with refinishing a blank with Permagloss. Please, Pretty Please? I tried refinishing a solid fibreglass rod last night. I am dissapointed with the result but am sure that it is my doing. The actual finish is good and looks nice and hard. The problem is with the colour. I wanted the rod to be an opaque red, but it is a very wishy washy translucent pink. I us

Searching through old posts I see it is not that hard. I just have a few questions. I want to re-space the guides on my first rod and use different guides. I would like to compliment the blank as best as I can keep learning. It was $130+, more than any complete rod I've bought. To get the guides off I take it you just gotta go for it and be pretty careful. I read mixed opinions about heating

I have read several times where builders have used Permaglos to coat the outside of a blank. I have an older IMX 8 foot 2 pc. 2 wt. fly rod blank that I would like to apply Permaglos to. However, I have a few questions which I was unable to have answered by looking through the archives on this subject. Do you coat the total blank? Even where the two sections would lock together? I was going t

I need to refinish 7 saltwater rods and have heard of many techniques and products for doing this. I have some Permagloss but am unsure on how to apply it. I have heard of the squeegee method but am not sure of how it is done. Any and all information (experience) is greatly appreciated. Thanks Brant

I purchased at @#$%& an old split bamboo surf rod. I would like to refinish and retie the eyes. I do not want to devalue the rod though. It has a small decal with a sailfish and H-1 in bold. It was made in Utica NY. It has hand written Surf King on the blank. I would like some info if anyone knows about the company and anything about refinishing bamboo. Also, what type of thread was used o

Hi all. My name is Paschalis, I am a fanatic fisherman from Greece and I am considering involving with rodbuilding, in order to customize my rods to my needs. Since I am a completely amateur I would like to ask for some information. I have an SPRO Cedra Power Beach II, 13 ft 3 piece surf rod casting 150-200 grams that has completely wrong guide placement. Also the butt guide is a folding type wi

Hi there, I am a first time poster and relativley new rod builder (20 or so rods) . On to my question: So far I have been using the 2 part epoxy for the finish coats. On my last rod, I tried the one part ready to use rod finish regular build product. It went on easily to the thread portions, but gave me challenges on the rod itself. (i.e. over the name decal, and just off the thread

I have a Dan Craft FT-905 rod that i am trying to rebuild. I have removed all the guides and thread but still there is some excess epoxy that just wont come off. Tried heat, scraping with plastic, fingernails etc. The epoxy is about 1 year old now and it seems it has become 1 with blank. Anyone have any suggestions?

I purchased some old rods at a garage sale, one of which is a glass rod, in hopes of making it a gift for a friend that recently lost/broke his first rod (25 years). I am not interested in "replacing" Orange, but in giving him a classic style rod. My question is this. This rod has some flaking of the outer coating and is that any indication to the integrity of the rod? I would h

I have already stripped and light sanded the blanks, removeing the guides and all, I want to mix some black and silver to make a charcol black color, is enamel paint like Testor's ok to use? The blanks are farily stiff and not much flex in the top sec

Hello, A friend asked me to restore his vintage fiber glass St. Croix spinning rod and I have a few questions. The factory finish was thin and appears to have worn off. Is there a noninvasive way to remove the rest of it? And can Flexcoat light be used to refinish them; or does fiber glass require varnish? Thanks in advance, Steve

So I built a bunch of graphite fly rods this winter. Really enjoyed the experience and I'll continue doing it for fun and cuz one can never have enough rods. I'm certainly a long way from mastering the craft, but I've become competent in the basics. The question is, how far can one go with these skills toward refinishing or restoring old cane rods? Not interested in building them from scratch min

In rummaging through my stack of rods I came across my first flyrod, an old Heddon Pal, over 40yrs old, time sure flies. I thought that I would rebuild the rod guides, cork, etc.,. The rod is painted and has several chips in the finish. I've never painted a rod before and would like some recommendations as to how. Additionallly, what would be the best way to remove the metal ferrules for replace

I`ve got a factory pre finished blank in black origin unknown. when i tried wrapping it (with various tensions including almost none) the thread cuts into the finish and `bleeds` through the thread making burnishing impossible any one got any ideas?? It seems that the thread no matter how well packed when wrapping (as tight together as my 40x magnifier will let me get them anyway) slips and the

I had to post this again, the original was deleted as I did not read posting instructions and did not include my full name. I have been working on my first rod a ST Croix spinning rig and all is going well until now. While prepping the blank to wrap the 2nd to last guide with 90% alcohol and a paper towel a blemish showed up. The blank is gloss black and now there is a matte finish in that small

I have a couple old sabre chockolate stroker factory wraps. They belonged to a dear friend who passed away, and I need to refinish them for his grandson. The guide wraps are not a problem. The entire blank is covered with a coating that is flaking, peeling, and coming off. It's fairly easy to remove from the blank, but I'll lose the decals with it. With the old finish off, the blank is dull,

I would first like to say that this forum is loaded with great information from what seem like great people. As a rookie to rod building I thought this would be a great place to get a few questions answered. 1. I have few rods I would like to put new guides on. What is the best way to remove the old finish to get to the wraps? 2. I have been doing alot of research trying to determine which

OK......I did not explain myself very clearly in the question posted a couple of days ago about removing spar varnish. Simply... How can I best remove ALL of the spar urathane (varnish) from a blank before I redo it.....rewrap it, this time using FC over the wraps rather than spar varnish. I can peel off most of the varnish when I remove the wraps.....but directly beneath where the wra

If I use 600 grain wet sandpaper to remove existing varnish on rod surface, will this be sufficient enough not to damage the graphite rod blank? I am going to repair 12 older spinning rods I have. Thank you, Capt. Marvin Engel

Well guys I need your help again. I'm in the process of refinishing a blank. I didn't look into it too much and I went to Napa and, since it didn't coat that much, bought a small can of automotive paint. Its called Dupli-Color and it came in a 5 oz spray can. I have no idea if it will work so I figured I'd ask before I mess up. I have a bottle of Permagloss, don't know if I need it to do this, bu
