I just stripped a spinning rod built on earlier US made Batson RX7 (charcoal). I am going re-build this into a casting rod.
When I removed old guides the blank coating has also peeled off and it doesn't look good. So I am going to remove the coating completely. What would be the best method to remove the coating without damaging the blank? Thanks Re: Removing blank coating

Not sanding, that's for sure. Either scraping at 90 degrees to the blank's surface, or perhaps a relatively mild chemical stripper such as the citrus based products.

I scrape. And like Tom stated; with the blade at 90 degrees to avoid slicing into the blank. After removing i give the blank surface a very light sand with fine wet/dry paper used wet, clean the blank with soapy water, rinse with warm water and dry off, and avoid touching the blank with my fingers prior to refinishing it. Citristrip works pretty well for this. Just apply, let it sit for awhile and wipe it off. You might have to do it a couple times but it avoids any potential damage from scraping.
If you do scrape, try using a concave cabinet scraper. This seems to work pretty well. Go lightly though. Terry Re: Removing blank coating

Thanks. I will try citristrip. I tried scraping but it seems taking forever. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
