Instead of brush applying testers tinted flexcoat to the entire length of the rod, i want to spray paint the ENTIRE rod then try the permagloss spray on polyurethane. I am just wondering, what is everyones setup for spraying lengths of rods? I have used my rod drying turner to spray on paint with decent results, but this usually means having to hold or brace the rod at each end(the rod dryer

I have a rod that I am doing some work on. It is the 2nd or 3rd rod I made. I made this rod for my brother in 1974 or 1975. The chevron has come loose and broken in a few places. All of the Guide wraps are intact, it is just the chevron that is "bad". He told me "do not change the guide wraps just the butt wrap". I have taken the chevron thread off and am now I am goin

I have a rod that just came off the dryer, and want to put another coat of finish on it, but I used up the last of my finish of that brand on this rod. I have some other brands of finish immediately available though. Would it work out OK if I lay a coat of brand "B" on top of a cured coat of brand "A" to get my new rod on the water sooner? Or would I be best off ordering some

Kind of a noobie problem i guess but here goes. I was given 2 rods by a friend. They are 6 foot boat rods....Navy blue EVA grips fore and aft....white fiberglass blanks. I have 2 little (4 years old each) nephews that want rods so I thought this would be a good, inexpensive way to get them matching rods. I decided to do a red-white-blue scheme for them. I scrubbed up the EVA and it came out

I have assembled a couple of MHX rods recently. I left the blanks "naked" as it came from the manufacture. Now I'm curious about what products are available for achieving a glossy finish over the entire rod. And, when are the products applied, before or after wrapping? Will these finishes improve durability and resist "bruising" that can occur on the un-finished blanks? How mu

Hi everyone. I just finished Tom Kirkman's book (which was outstanding by the way so thank you, Tom---worth every dime) and I'm pumped up about building my first rod...that is, until I looked at the photo section of this blog. I REALLY want it to be nice because I'm going to make it for my brother. In seeing some of the reel seat and handle work that you guys do, I am actually pretty intimidat

Hi guys, Am new to this forum and the site has a lot of good stuff. I would like to ask a question: Am an avid fisherman and have made up my own rods for years. But never had refinished one. Years ago, made up 4, 13.5ft. Fenwick blanks for surf casting. All double wrapped, fuji guides, the works. Beautiful rods and have given me great service but after years of hard use, are now star

I haven't built a rod for over 30 years and have ordered 2 Kistler HE66me rod blanks. I now need to order reel seats... how do I know what size to order? This is probably a question that everyone knows but me and I didn't do well with the search function. Here is the info on the blanks: Medium Power Extra-Fast Action 6' 6" in Length 8 - 17 lb Line Wt. 1/4 - 3/4 Oz Lure Wt. Blan

I am going to be replacing some guides on a few rods. I am using a different style guide so there will be some areas that the location of the old wrap will not be covered by the new one. What is the best way to remove the old finish without hurting the blank finish? Thanks in advance.

Hello, everyone! Just a quick question for you all. I have a couple of rods with very nice long decorative butt wraps upon which the rigors of party boat fishing has taken its toll. In other words, scratched and generally ratty looking. Luckily, the epoxy is thick over the wrap. Any problems with sanding down an old butt wrap and redoing it? These were, I believe, done with Aftcote. I'v

I'm about to redo an older fiberglass fly rod. the original finish is scuffed and dirty. I'm going to 3M it down and then recoat before wrapping. Question is, what finish to use. Perma gloss, maybe too "Hot" and screw things up if I don't get all the original finish off. Clear coat auto finish. Done this before on blanks and am ok with it. Spar varnish probably what is on

I'm in need of shortening a foregrip that's a little too long for my needs/wants. I will need to remove about 1.5 inches from the grip in order to make this more suitable. (down from 3.5 to 2 in.) I have some ideas about how to begin, but would REALLY love some direction on this one. It's cork, attached with (I believe) Rod Bond. I was just going to cut a few rings off, as close to t

Hi Folks, Although I've built a fair number of rods, I'm in the process of building my first for sale rod, and I'd like to get some input about my guide spacing. The blank is a recycled (at the customer's request) Quantum TGS661MW, 6' 6", rated 6-12 lb. line and 1/8- 1/2 oz. lures. After complete stripping and refinishing , I 've installed a split grip with a Fuji cork covered quicklock g

I have a blank that was bought a few years ago by my father. He put a handle and seat on it with rodbuilders epoxy and I believe he used super glue to secure ONE LARGE Spinning guide. I am working on finishing the build with a nice custom handle and the guide spacing is all messed up with that one guide on there. At this point the handle is removed leaving a bunch of the epoxy. What is the

I have two fly rods built on the first St. Croix SCV (Elite) blanks with the gloss brown finish. I like the rods but the finish is soft, hard to match thread colors to and ugly (to my eyes) as sin. Has anyone stripped these blanks down? Would I get a nice graphite grey finish if I stripped them and buffed with wet sandpaper or something like that?

I've recently purchased a 5C70MF blank and it is the "old color" gloss brown. I don't particularly care for the color, and I understand that this finish does not wear very well. So... I'd like to remove the brown finish and apply a coat of Permagloss. I'm no cosmetician - am I potentailly getting myself in trouble? How should I proceed, if at all? Thank you, Rick

I have several rods that have begun to flake. I am talking about the finish on the actual blank, not the epoxy. You can rub your fingernail on the rods and what looks like dead skin comes off. These are saltwater rods - yes, they have been washed after use. Is there something that can be done to stop this process, and restore the blanks? I ran a few searches, but came up empty handed. The

I am refinishing a rod, top to bottom. I split the reel seat, very carefully and peeled the old reel seat off. Now, how do I get all the old epoxy off? It doesn't want to scrape off, and sanding it off could damage the blank. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I have stripped the coating off an old fly rod. The original intention was just to rewrap the guides, but due to UV damage the coating had to go. This has lead to some questions. Must the carbon blank be treated with a coating of some kind, or is it acceptable to use in the salt as is? If it must be coated, what products are suitable in addition to PermaGloss? Is ther esomething I can pi

I was wondering if there is anyone in the rod building business that will recoat or refinish graphite fly rod blanks. I have two blanks that I would like to change the colors of. I'm somewhat familiar with the process, but I do not have the means to do it myself. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Bill H.

Hi All! I am refinishing a solid glass rod from 1940. The fiberglass seems to have taken on a yellow-ish stain or discoloration. The blank area where the wraps once were, is almost transluscent white. The rest of the rod is yellow. I think that the discoloration may be due to UV. I have tried scraping with a razor, rubbing with a nylon abrasive pad, and even tried a little isopropyl alcohol

Two questions. Customer wants to restore two rods. The first is a Harrington that someone did a real ugly job on the finish. The entire rod appears to have been coated with thread finish. Its lumpy and bumpy. Obvious drips from where the finish settled. My plan is to knock the high spots off carefully with a razor blade, than sand the blank down to the paint, than refinish with Permaglo

I'm trying to paint a rod blank. I sprayed several coats of black Krylon Fusion then wet sanded. I then tried to brush on U40 Permagloss for a finish coat and got a gloppy, lumpy , uneven mess. The permagloss also seemed to melt the Krylon paint. Any ideas or suggestions?

Some people never learn...a buddy for mine gave me a rod to repair and what it looks like is, he'd been using braid in guides not made for it, I don't know maybe be the hazard of using braided line, it has worn grooves in them so I am replaceing the guides.. Ive been doing the proven method of cutting down to the underwrap with a razor blade on the edge of the overwrap and then pulling the underw

I'm refinishing what I believe to be a 1950-ish (maybe late 40's) fiberglass casting rod. Stream-Eze, South Bend, Ind. Pfleuger "Ace Hi" Number 2742 real seat. Blank attaches to a ferrule on the reel seat Will PG harm the decal on the blank? Will PG have any harmful effect on the blank, which appears to be unpainted, but may be tinted? Thanks.
