I know there are tons of discussions on this board about how to use decals and an epoxy coating for the labels on our custom built rods. However, I have not been able to get a smooth, clean epoxy layer no matter how hard I try. Factory-built rods silkscreen (I think) the labels using a durable paint with no epoxy overcoat. Has anyone tried to do this on your builds? Is there equipment out there t

Have couple rods with broken guides. 10 feet 3 oz weight 2 pieces spinning. Just hate to throw things so decided to fix them . Striped the first one with abrasive pad, paint and primer both. What paint and primer to use ,brands and models? Clear finish? Read some topics on forums and internet, feel more confused now? Will appreciate any info. Thanks in advance.

I've rarely had this issue before. It may be related to my advancing age and retreating memory, but I'm beginning to have a lot of problems with the shadow of the blank coming through the thread on wraps when I want the thread to be completely opaque. I did a wrap with ProWrap Hot Pink NCP thread on a black blank and try as I might, the blank shadow is still showing through. After doing the wrap,

Soooo I’m relatively new to rod building and I’ve been looking for the best and most professional way to accomplish this, can anyone give me some detailed instruction on getting a color shifting effect onto the rod not the whole blank just between the foregrip and first guide

Has any had any experience in re-coloring a plastic tackle box they wouldn't mind sharing? I have an older one I've acquired that's pretty faded and was thinking of trying to dye the color in rather than paint it but have not tried either and was hoping for some experienced opinions on the matter. It by the way is one of the fold out shelf/tray style ones... Thank you.

The "expoxy over label" posted earlier reminded me of my own question. I just used a blank in a build that came with a label that's not to my taste, it's just too big and long. I'd like to label the rod very simply, like "905" to cover the length and weight. Any suggestions on where to get decals or labels for something simple like that? Does Hobby Lobby carry that ty

I purchased a carbon fiber fore grip and after inspecting it I see there is no discernible coating over the weave. I contacted the vendor and they say there is no problem using the grip as is but I would feel more comfortable if there were more of a solid finish on it. I don't want to use thread finish because there would be too thick of a build up.So I am thinking of trying Krylon clear coat

Can anyone give me a recommendation on an easy to apply clear coat for use on a painted graphite rod blank? As background, I am picking up rod building again after a 40 year hiatus, so am trying to relearn the techniques and modern approaches to the hobby. I am practicing on an unfinished ultralight graphite blank that I purchased at a garage sale. It was unfinished and unsanded, so I have san

I've have been reviewing all the different threads about painting rod blanks. But my problem is I don't have a spray gun. Is there an option out there for a spray can paint that works well for painting rod blanks? I'm trying to make a brightly colored rod tips to see the action on a fiberglass blank.

I am rebuilding a G.Loomis surf rod and need to repaint the blank with flat black paint to cover up original paint scratches. I want to cover this paint with U-40 perma gloss. I tried Krylon on an old blank, let dry 24 hrs, then applied U-40, but the paint then dissolved and rubbed off. Any ideas on which paint to use?

Was on their site yesterday, looking at their Q&A. Saw this, directly from one of their customer servicemen: Hello, This product is not meant to be used on flexible substrates. We recommend it be used on hard rigid surfaces only. If the surface is too flexible, it could crack, chip, or peel. Regards, KrylonCS - See more at: Interesting, as this is one of the two highest rated p

New to air brushing.. Want to paint some ice blanks. normally I use krylon fusion which is real flexible and doesn't crack. But they don't have all the colors that I need. Do I need to be concerned with paint cracking (there will be a coat of clear coat over it) for ice blanks? Suggestion on make and model and decent company to deal with please. thanks, Buzz

Instead of painting a rod blank, could you wrap the blank between guides with a solid color vinyl wrap?

I've never painted a rod before and am wondering which paint is best to do it? The rod I'm rebuilding is a very old (45 years) 6'-9" fiberglass rod I bought years ago for mainly Bluefishing Bunker (Manhaden) cut bait on a boat. I'm in the process of using a citrus paint/varnish remover (per this forum) and am amazed how easy the citrus remover works, doesn't stink up the whole neighborh

I have a customer that wants me to paint a blank with metallic paint. I have never painted a blank and don't even know if this should be done. Does it crack? What type paint? Does it change the action of the rod? Any feedback will be great. Thanks

I've applied the CP over decal to avoid lifting of edges, but after the epox cured, the CP looks very visible like a cloudy dirty shade under the epoxy. Was it because it was too thick ? Can I try some other method for the decal without using CP ? I hate it.

--Hey everyone, Kinda new at this, only have built, or rebuilt I should say, one single rod. I searched everywhere for what paint to use and what clear coat to use and there was not a clear answer so I decided to experiment and then post the results to the forum for any other newbie looking for the right answer. I read a lot of people using Krylon Fusion, which I could only find Krylon Maxx

I am planning on making my 3 1/2 yr old son a rod this winter and he wants a red rod. I am thinking of a 5'6" or 6' light power for trout & panfish. The only place I found a red blank in this size range was Rod Geeks which offers a 6' blank. Does anyone know of any other vendor? Thanks, -Chris

I am rebuilding an older, pumpkin - colored glass surf blank and would like to paint over/blend in scratches and bare spots rather than stripping, prepping , and repainting the entire blank. What is the best way to go about finding a close match in paint color?

Hi All, many threads on painting blanks but I could not find one on Aluminum blanks. I have an old Mitchell Rod and Reel that I am redoing for my cousin. It is a sentimental piece or I prob would not bother with it lol. So, I have the Krylon (leather brown), I matched it and tried it on an old blank so that is good. 2 Main questions then: 1) Should I prime the blank since it's aluminum?

I'm just getting into rod building and have built 3 rods so far. I've been struggling to find a 36' medium heavy fiberglass rod blank for ice fishing. I have found 2 on mudhole, but they have orange or yellow tips near the end. I'm tryign to build a rod for a friend as a gift and would prefer to not have the colored tip. Silly? Certainly, but any suggestions would be great as google as not
