Hi to all you happy wrappers, thanks for reading and hopefully assisting to resolve my Perma Gloss issues.
Without using PG before, I read the application directions and purchased a couple good quality, 3/8in artist brushes. The first coat applied to the rotating butt section resulted in a slightly streaky, lumpy finish, obviously from my “thin” coat being thicker than what PM considers thin. Al

I've had an old Montague Flash 9 ft. bamboo rod laying around for years and I recently decided it was time to restore it to a fishable condition. I know it has little value as a vintage rod, but thought it would be a good project and fun to fish. I've removed all the old guides, closely examined the three rod sections and all appear to be sound; no delaminations, etc. The ferrules fit perfectl

I'm just looking for any advice or techniques for applying CP to the top of a tiger wrap. This is on a Madeira wrap, so the gap is very small. The last time I tried, I ended up losing the effect. I don't know if I moved the threads and closed in the gaps or if the cp covered up the undercoat to the point of blocking the holographic effect. I had to pull off a lot of thread and ended up having

34. Painting blank
I have a customer that wants me to paint a blank with metallic paint. I have never painted a blank and don't even know if this should be done. Does it crack? What type paint? Does it change the action of the rod?
Any feedback will be great. Thanks

I thought this would have come up sooner, but since it has not, let me ask: Doesn't the "freeze frame" method of wrap finishing featured in the magazine last issue have high risk for deteriorating the physical characteristics of the wrapping epoxy? I remember a previous article warning about the dangers of excessive heat making the epoxy less flexible. It seems to me that the "f

I use PG at least twice a week and am comfortable with it most times.
On longer stretches of blank i use a technique similar to how one does a grip: spin rod in a lathe at about 100 to 200 rpm apply PG saturated foam brush with one pass, wait 30 minutes then come back from the other direction and its done.
So lat night on a sage 4 wt i did that over 3 coats of CP where the logo is and my name

I have turned the handle parts and am ready for glue up. I have only recently started using this product. On my last handle I applied the permagloss and when glueing the handle it dulled up the finish where ever the epoxy touched the permagloss. I had let the handle set over night after application of the permagloss. I am wondering if I did not let it cure long enough or if this is just a don

Just a quick question about this, I don't like the outcome of using ht sponge brush applying this and an alterative is cheese cloth, which I have not found where I am. I figue any cloth that is not corse or will leave fuss shold work to put on a couple of coats. does this sound accurate?

39. Blank Finish
Have a question regarding the finish on blanks. A friend of mine has a spinning blank with a matt finish and he wants me to build it for him but he wants it to have a gloss finish. Can I epoxy the whole blank with a thin coat or spray it with a polyurethane before I wrap it?

Guys I have a few questions regarding the use of PermaGloss if you wouldn't mind.
1.)When using PermaGloss as a finish the blank itself do you need to keep turning or is that unecissary? Is it even a good idea to use it as a blank finish?
2.)Can you use it as finish for guide wraps? If so how many coats does it take I am assuming quite a few more than it would with say a 2 part epoxy like

I have a question regarding a Tom Kirkman YouTube video instructing application of a urethane finish to carbon fiber grips. Tom makes a strong point not to use any solvent to clean the grip prior to application of the urethane. Unfortunately, I saw this AFTER doing just that (thinner) used to clean up the rod bond used in gluing the grip to the blank. What do I need to do at this point to pre

42. Rod paint help 2
I would like to start by thanking everyone who responded to the last thread as it was greatly appreciated.
I ended up using tamiya r/c polycarbonate paint on the blank I painted. I then used spraymax 2k clear over that three coats a half hour apart. I followed all the directions on spraymax can to the letter. The blank has now sat for 36 hours at 64-68 degrees.
Problem- it isn't hard. Now exac

Well here I am finally upset enough to consider painting rod blanks. Some blanks are just awesome but come in (my opinion only) horrible colors. Therefore i now need to decide to get an airbrush kit, use spray paint, or a spray gun. I am leaning toward the airbrush only because it is only a few blanks that i want to do. I tried to use spray paint before- then put on permagloss which burned the pa

I have searched and found lots of info on PG, but I have not found what most use to apply PG on wraps. I am rebuilding and old Bamboo rod and would like the best possible applcation technique on the wraps. Do you guys use a good brush, cheap brush, spatula or other? Sorry if this has been covered before.

45. permagloss issue
After becoming resonably proficient at 2 part epoxy application, i decided to try my hand at permagloss. I have previously finished a rod with spar urethane and it was a success, however permagloss is proving difficult.
I will try to descibe the condition as accurately as possible. On some of the wraps, after the second or thrid coat small spots and streaks have appeared which look almost lik

A couple of years ago I did a repair job to a stripping guide wrap using Flexcoat Lite (2 oz. bottles). I stored the Flexcoat resin and hardener upright in my rod building Plano storage tackle box. Now I would like to finish the wraps on a light weight fly rod. When I went to use the Flexcoat this afternoon, I noticed the resin is still clear, but the harderner has yellowed and the plastic bot

I have read various threads about using permagloss after painting a blank, I tried making the pop bottle applicator but I can't find rubber that doesn't rip when slid down a fast action blank, and tried the foam brush which seemed to leave runs at the bottom, and not have enough left in it at the tip, then I went to the coffee filter but I have a hard time not overlapping and messing up the finis

Hi Gents,
Had my first go at using the stuff and it looks like it's turned out pretty good. Wanted to say thanks to Tom for the articles in Rodmaker. Wasn't as difficult as I expected although the humidity is pretty low here at this time of year, will be totally diferent in six months so should have another go then to see what it's like. Anyone thinking of using it should go ok if you follow Tom

53. Blank painting
Hello everyone,
I plan to paint a blank, and I would like to know if someone have ever used Lumiseal or Permagloss as finish, without any problem ?
I have read that Lumiseal and Permagloss have a hot catalysts, and I am afraid by paint unsticking.
I will try to paint and finish the blank in rotation to make a "sheathing" of paint and finish on the blank, for assure a good pain

Never used this stuff before...
A. What kind of solvent works?
B. I'm just touching up the clear coat on a blank where some guides were relocated from. Will it work in just those areas as a touch up and be relatively unnoticeable or should I just do the whole blank?
Thanks again!!

How does everyone coat the entire rod with epoxy? I've seen heavy saltwater/offshore rods with epoxy from tip to forecheck (no blank exposed).
I'm using a pacbay power wrapper and am scratching my head on how to do this without the roller/supports getting in the way.
Anyone?
What kind of drying system is used?

Can some explain the difference and appropriate uses of these two finishes. I am not a chemist, so plain language is needed. T K uses spray urethane oh fiber carbon handles, why not polyurethane?
Thanks, John

How does the carbon skinned foam grips compare to cork and/or eva in regards to weight and sensitivity? Assuming all things equal, split grip setup, do you save much weight by using the foam and carbon? I do not have the supplies or know how yet to make the carbon skinned grip, but plan on attempting one this spring. Any insight into the weight or sensitivity is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jer

58. Ugly blanks..
Hey guys,
I got some blanks from the mudhole blowout and several of them seem faded or have been rubbed against something for part of the blank.
What's the best way for me to tidy up these blanks? If I paint the blanks I'll have to epoxy the whole length to ensure the paint doesn't come off, right?
Thank you.

I have been building up my composite carbon fiber grips using riley rods foam and epoxy. They work great but I would like to use something a little stronger/harder as a top or finish coat. I spend a lot of time making sure they look perfect and then the first time someone touches the grip it gets scuffed pretty easy and or smudged. Does anyone have any suggestions on a finish/top coat epoxy or

Has anyone sprayed permagloss or Lumiseal with a Preval aerosol sprayer? I am thinking of giving it a shot on a painted blank for a smother finish. Just wanted to get some feedback first. I have never used permagloss, but I would think Lumiseal would need to be thinned before spraying.
thanks,
Thomas
