I'm looking for a fly rod that will fish nymphs as well as cast dry flies. I don't have experience with many blanks and I would appreciate some suggestions.
Thanks

I'm building a 9 FT.,2-piece, St. Croix Fly rod. I'm planning on using 2 stripping guides, a size 12 and 6. My question: can a size 6 snake guide be considered a stripping guide? This seems like a dumb question, but for the life of me, I can't make a read on this.
Thanks

What do you think of these guides for a 9', 6 wt.
A Size 12 stripping guide and size 2s to the tip top.
Opinions sought.
Thanks,
Bruce
how about: 12, 6, and size 2s to the tip?

What Jim said. It's very time consuming. I've done it twice and I don't like it. Ha!

This, too, is my "go to" site for help and I'm never disappointed. Thanks so much.

190. Placing hook keeper
Just to make sure I have this correct. I'm going to place a hook keeper on a glossy finish rod for a friend. Do I rough up the area with scotch brite, wrap the hook keeper and then add the finish?
Thanks

I haven't built a rod for awhile and I see Micro Guides being discussed. What are they and are they used in place of standard fly rod guides?

Good idea with rubberband and paper clip. I've done the same thing. I, too, cut the tip off and finished the road with no noticeable difference. It fishes just fine.

193. Re: Does the weight saved by using permagloss on guide windings really affect how the rod feels?
I think it's like talking the difference in weight between 1 feather and 2. I think you'd have to put a ton of finish on to notice a difference.
Just my opinion.

I never had any trouble with mine. I use nitrile gloves.

I just want to echo what I was taught by these great people, static guide placement is always best. I use my meaurserments to get close and then I adjust them via static guide placement. Works really well for me.

I've been using Liquid Fusion and I think it holds up pretty well and there's no mixing required.

Yes, me too I use the 5 cent throw-aways for the same reasons as Roger.

The general rule for the number of guides on a fly rod, if not using Static Guide Placement, which I like, is a guide for each foot of the rod, plus one. So, a 9 foot rod will use 10 guides and a tip top. Does that standard still apply?

Tom, What would you suggest in snake guides; 12, 6, 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, plus a tip top?

Hi Tom. The butt is 0.44. It is a #5 tip and it weighs 2.48 ounces. Is it okay to say it is a Tradition II blank? I believe they are moderate-fast blanks. I'm not sure of the modulus. I don't want to offend any of our sponsors.

What rod guide configuration would you suggest for a 9-foot, 8 Wt., 2-piece fly rod? I'll be using it for bass and steelhead.
Thanks

208. Re: Preview of color
I was advised by the builders on this site to throw some water on them. It's always worked fine for me. Make a wrap, wet it, and see how you like it.
