No. I just applied it directly on the blank.

It is a peel and stick from the Mudhole MHX Fly Rod Kit. It is covered with finish, but instead of it appearing likes it is floating on all 4 sides, you can see a cut mark on one edge. I trimmed it as close to the print as I could before I placed it on the rod. Maybe it was not meant to be trimmed. I hope that is more clear.

I can see the bottom edge of my decal after finishing the rod. Can you tell me why this happened? Thanks

Yes. All I had to do is make some wraps of thread, add a trim wrap and some water, and I could have easily seen the result.

For all of you that don't build a lot of rods this is a reminder to test your thread color and trim wrap color before you proceed. I built a rod with a burgundy thread and Carolina blue trim wrap and it looked great. The blank was a root beer color. With that in mind I used the same combination on a matte grey blank with the same expectations. Well, the Carolina blue trim wrap disappeared into th

Thanks to all who have replied to my questions. You've been a great help. After looking closely at the wraps I noticed some blemishes in the finish (it looked like dust to me) so I cut them off with a razor blade and put on a thin second coat. It looks pretty good. I feel better about it today. Thanks again for all of your help.

158. 2nd coat
I put the first coat of Flex Coat Lite on at around 5 PM yesterday (Tuesday). I can't put the second coat on until 10 AM tomorrow (Thursday). Is that waiting too long? I guess that's about 40 hours. Thanks, Bruce

I neglected to mention that I'm using Flex Coat Lite. I just put a coat on and I tried to put it on a little heavy to make sure I only need one coat. But, I still think I'll need a thin second coat. I guess I'll know later.

I should have said in my post I'm referring to fly rods. I haven't built a lot of rods, but I've always felt that as long as I can't see thread the thread grooves, I have it covered. I guess as long as the thread wraps are covered the rod will hold up.

I have a buddy that told me if one coat of finish covers there is no need to put on a second coat, even if using a lite finish like Flex Coat. I would appreciate opinions. Thankse

Do you do the same with fly rods, spin rods, and casting rods? I'm finishing a fly rod.

Re: tip top new Posted by: Tom Kirkman (Moderator) Date: May 01, 2015 05:11PM If you'll extend your trim wrap up onto and beyond the tiptop tube, and then epoxy finish over that, your tiptop will stay put - no turning nor twisting. If you need to replace it, just trim back the trim wrap, loosen the hot melt with gentle heat, and remove. Best of all worlds. ............ Hi Tom and

Is it proper to install both the reel seat and handle as the first step in building a fly rod? Or should I do the reel seat one day and the handle the next?

Sorry. I read through my old posts and saw I asked this question last September. I got a few ideas then.

I'm looking for a rod with action similar to the old Scott SES rods, if anyone is familiar with the blank. I need a blank that will nymph and cast dry flies equally well, if that's possible. I figure one of you pros may be able to help.

A while back someone on this board recommended ice rods blanks with tips that acted like bobbers and fast at the mid-blank. I can't find the post and I want to purchase a few. I checked my followed topics but can't find it. If anyone can remember who replied to my inquiry, would you please lead me in the right direction? Thanks

I'm looking for a few ice rod blanks to build. I would like ultra light with the tip soft enough to act as indicator for pan fish. I tried the search, but came up empty. I realize the sponsors offer them, but I'd like someone with experience to help, someone who might have experience with such blanks. Thanks

To me the ultimate experience is catching a fish on a rod I built and a fly I tied.

I've built about 20 rods. Some I've liked and some I've hated. How can you find a blank you're happy with before building on it? Any suggestions or is it just hit or miss. I realize you pros build many rods and your experience tells you. Thanks
