121. Re: [tip top match
Maryann: I am in the same boat. I wanted to go with a size 5 Minima 4 fly guide, but couldn't find a Minima 4 tip top in a size 5 ring. I am not familiar with the XP4XT TT. I would really like to find a Minima 4 size 5 TT in black and chrome for my new fly rod.

Roger: The PT tip top shown on page 21 of the Pac-Bay catalog has the Minima ring inserts and comes in ring sizes from 6 to 10. The FM tip top on page 24 has the minima rings and comes in ring sizes 3 and 4. The MVT tip top on page 17 of the catalog is also a minima tip top and only comes in size 4 rings. Pac-Bay does not make a minima tip top with a size 5 ring insert that I can find.

My plan was to build a Pac-Bay Quick Line 9' 5wt rod using the Pac-Bay Minima 4 guides with the black frame and chrome inserts, and a Pac-Bay AWG7CT, and wrapping it in black and metalic silver. I have never seen any of these parts before. I got my parts yesterday, and love the feel of the blank. The Minima guides are lite, and I am going to order some for another rod I am building. Do a search for UNI-products. They make a phosporescent thread used in fly tying. It is called Uni-Glo. I have never used this product, and know nothing about it. There is a contact us link, on their web site. They should be Fisherman friendly since they are geared towards fly tying.

125. Re: Guide feet
You don't say what color you are looking to match up. There are felt tipped paint pens available in many colors. I seem to remember that there have been discussions on this forum for and against using the Sharpies. Do a search on this site for "coloring guide feet", and you will get a ton of information.

This is off topic. I checked with Tom Kirkman before posting it. I have a smoker and am looking for a good smoked salmon recipe. I figured who better to ask then people who fish. Please email me directly so the forum doesn't get a lot of posts on this.

I placed my order today. 9’ 5wt Quick Line blank, and minima 4 guides. I didn’t like the looks of the Pac Bay Model MTV Minima tip top, so went with the Model P. I really liked the looks of their Model MT, but they don’t make it in the Minima 4. The question that I have is why do these companies make guides down to size 4 or smaller, but don’t seem to make a matching tip top, or did I

Sorry for being so dumb, but I have never seen the Minima guides. I did a quick search on Google. These appear to be a single foot guide. Would you use a single foot stripper as well, or go to a double foot? Can't figure out the difference between the Minima 3 and Minima 4. I have built lots of fly rods, but this is all new ground for me.

I am going to place an order tomorrow for a 9' 5wt. PacBay quick line blank. I have never seen one of these, but have heard they were very good. I would really like to hear from anyone that has built one of these. I am going to use wire single foot guides except for the stripper and maybe the next guide up. These will be a ceramic guide of some sort. I am looking for guide size and placement

130. Re: Fly rod problem
Col.
I don't have the Rod Builder issue with these instructions, but have run across this problem. I used White China marker on the butt section, and put the 2 pieces together. This creates a "Tell". If the marker is rubbed off of the tip of the butt section, The butt section needs to be trimed. If the marker is rubbed off closer to where the end of the top section comes to rest,

I didn't mean to imply that you were wrong in your suggestions. I actually never even considered your reason for the larger spool. I have been reading the questions posted by Bruce Kemp, and sort of figured out that he is new to fly fishing. I don't know if he is new to rod building or not. I guess my suggestion to Bruce would be to find a casting class that has rods and reels the stu

I guess I am just a minimalist, and old timer when it comes to fly reels for pan fish. I have to ask the guys that have caught a lot of pan fish on a fly rod; When was the last time that you made a cast long enough to get into the backing? Did you go to the reel, or play the fish by hand? Did the fish make a run long enough to get you into the backing? Did the extra 5†of line retrieval pe

133. Re: fly reels
I have a a couple of old Pfluegler Medalist reels. They aren't pretty, and are heavy, I have one that is well over 50 years old, and has been used to catch everything from pan fish to steelhead. They were state of the art when I bought it. The neat thing is they are not expensive, and after 50 years, I can still buy parts to repair it.I have newer and better reels, but I always go back to the

I talked to the people at Flex Coat awhile back. The gentleman I talked to was very knowledgeable about this product. He told me that the high build and lite build products use the same hardener but the resins are different. He also said that you can mix the high build and lite resins and come up with a medium build finish. The reason I called Flex Coat was because I was having trouble with f

I don't know if they are still in business or not. I do know that if I had an unhappy customer, I would pick up the phone and call them. But this is just me. When I place an order, or send a rod back, I always call.

Birchwood Casey and Testor's make black paint pens. I use these to color the feet. Just shake them up, and touch the tip of the fiber wick to the are that needs to be colored. No muss, No fuss, No clean up.

I have 3 dogs. Jack Daniels is a Drathaar, Wolf Man is a Schimmelscwartz (sp), and Dumb A-- is a Chesapeake cross. For the most part they stay away from me when I am building. My handwritting is very bad, so when I get ready to inscribe a rod I do a lot of practice before i put pen on blank. I finally got ready to do the inscription on a rod. The day was one of thos beautiful Spring days tha

The rubber bands for braces come in different sizes, and are inexpensive. They stretch fairly well. You can also use a small band with a twist in it so it is doubled for smaller blanks.

Bill:
I would say something is not right with the blank. I have seen Bamboo take a set after being leaned up against a wall overnight, but don't think I have ever seen one take a set in the manner you discribe. Angler's Roost might be the place for you to ask this question. Bamboo is a strange critter, and takes someone that knows Bamboo to figure out what it will do.

I would sit down and write some notes on What kind of fishing you will be doing with this rod, what line weights, lure weights, length of rod price range, etc. Once you have the notes, pick up the phone and call one of the suppliers on the left. These guys and gal's are very knowledgable, and they will walk you through your order, and make a lot of suggestions about what you need, and

145. Re: Oregon trout rod
I am in Idaho and fish from shore. The areas I fish, you never know what you will catch rangeing from Bluegill/Crappie/Bass to small trout that range from 10" to 20", to Cat fish. I built a friend that fishes the same area a Batson SB720-4. I liked the feel of the finished rod so much that I am building one for myself.

I am doing some repairs on a Lamiglass G 200 factory rod. This is a casting Salmon/Steelhead factory built rod. I contacted Lamiglass about which guides and thread they used on this rod. Through email, I was told that they might be Fuji, or Pac-Bay guides, and the thread was Gudebrod. I sent an email back asking what color Gudebrod thread? The answer: "looks like navy blue". Do an

Doug: Do a Google search for Fenwick fl 102, and then click on the Google Images. You will see pictures of these rods with a number of different ferrules from over sleeve, to spigot, to tip over butt. I don't know if the builders bought 2 blanks, and cut one of them to make the yellow pieces for the spigot, or over sleeve or not. Spigot type ferrules actually appear on some good rods. Don't

I did some searching, and I have seen pictures of the Fenwick 102 with both tip over butt Ferrules, and with spigot ferrules. I finally found a site that has some history of these rods, and the light came on. It seems that when Fenwick first started selling blanks, they wanted a way to know if the rod was made at the factory, or if it was a custom rod made from one of their blanks. The factory
