I just tried to take a picture of my glasses with the flip up lenses that would show the flip up's, and give you some idea of the 3 powers. The top is my normal prescription, the middle is 3x, and the bottom is 5.5x. The picture is not as dramatic as when you get all 3 lenses at a distance where all 3 lenses are almost in focus. I posted the picture here: .

Roger: The headaches, neck pain, and vertigo was when I was using the lighted magnifiers, or single focal glasses. Trying to get the magnifier so it focused, and then holding my head to accomodate the magnifier. All of this went away when I started using the multi-focal glasses. I have worn bi-focals for 30 plus years, and tilting my head enough to go from the normal vision to the reading p

Bobby: I normally wear bi-focal glasses. I have tried all of the different magnification ideas except the head visor type. I had trouble with all of them. I finally hit on a set of flip down magnifiers that clip to my glasses. I wear the large "aviator", or shooting style glasses. The flip down magnifier had a long drop down to it's lens. This worked out great. I had part of m

Jim: Flitz is a metal polish used for guns, knives, cars, and other things. You can find it at auto parts stores like Pep Boys, Home Depot, and most sporting goods stores that sell firearms. It is good stuff.

Kevin: I have been using Anglers Workshop since they were a Mom and Pop operation. Even back then all you had to do was call them. They would answer all of your questions, and take care of any problems. They have just gotten bigger and better over the years. I can't say enough good things about them. They have walked me through a number of builds over the years. They are working on their

Jim: I am not familiar with the rod or guides you are working on. I can tell you that the finish is varnish. Probably the old Gudebrod varnish. I seem to remember that they called it "Glass". I see that Gudebrod is making varnish again. I don't know if it is the same as what they made years ago. Since you are removing the guides, it will make it easier to clean them. Since the

Eric: I went Minima T strippers in size 12 and 8. Since I was using the black frame with chrome insert, I used the Minima F in size 6, and a Minima P size 6 tip top. I am with you in that I thought that the size 4 F guides looked a little small. I would have gone with the size 5 guides if they had a size 5 tip top in black and chrome Minima 4. I have since talked to Pac Bay, and was told t

Bruce: You don't have to use all of the colors from your kit on your build. Both green and gold and black and gold really look good. I may be strange, but I do my wraps starting with the trim band, and then start the main color. I leave a long running end to the trim band, and use this to make a single turn of trim after 5 turns of the main color. I know this sounds about as clear as mud. b

You are talking about a 2 wt. rod. I would go Minima 4 guides for the whole build. I am building a 5 wt. rod and using the Minima 4 guides. I am planning a 7 wt. build, and once again, it will be Minima 4 guides. I am a new convert to the Minima 4 guides, but I really think that you would have to be over fishing a rod to cause a problem with these guides. When I say over fishing, I mean tryi

I have one that I got at Joann's. It is plastic, has a hinged lid, and plastic locks to keep it closed. This is made for sewing thread spools, and works for me. It is something like 13'x14'x3", and designed to be stackable.

I am just wondering if anyone has tried to do an incription on a rod over a tiger wrap? What were the results?

I am sure this has been asked before, but the question just popped into my head after some recent builds. We can get pretty much all of the guide measurments except the I.D of the guide. I know that when I order guides for a spinning rod. they are sized on the O.D. of the ring. Then I get into wire fly guides. These things have a totally different sizing terminology. These things are listed

Maryann: i sent an email to Pac-Bay about their recommendations for running guides. They recommend size 4 Minima "F" guides for rods up to 10 Wt. I recieved this reply from them today: "I would agree with you that in my personal preference, I would likely use a size 5 Minima guide on a 10 wt single handed rod. However, I did test a 650 grain 10 wt spey line at the large taper

Maryann: I am just finishing a 9' 5wt. QuickLine. I did it all in Minima 4 Guides. I used the black frame and chrome ring. wrapped it in black with silver metallic trim. Used the polished aluminum Pac-Bay reel seat with black woven graphite insert. It is very nice. I used the Minima F guides in size 6 for the running guides. We talked about Pac-Bay not making a fly type tip top larger t

Sorry Tom. There seems to be a breakdown in the language we use for this. I must just be old, and havn't learned the new stuff. We always called the heavy guides close to the grip stripper guides. On short rods it was 1 stripper, on longer rods it was 2 or 3. My mistake, and I am sorry for adding to the confusion.

Thanks Don. I just built a 9' 5 Wt., and used size 6 Minima guides. They seemed large to me. Tom Kirkman said to use size 5 Minima guides. The problem was finding a size 5 Minima tip top. I did talk to Pac-Bay, and they are working on the size 5 and 6 tip tops for fly rods. I will go with the size 6 running guides.

Don: Thanks. The Pac-Bay catalog shows everything in MM, I have been converting what they list as the ID for their F guides to inches. The F 6 works out as .212" (close enough to .202"). The F 7 guide would be .255", and the F 8 would be .283". They don't list an ID for the size 4 single foot wire guide. The Batson recipe for a 9' 7Wt. fly rod calls for size 4 single foo

I am going to use the Minima 4 guides on this rod, and know the sizing is different on these than for the single foot wire guides. I went to Jann's Netcraft, and printed out the page that has a black dot to show the ID of a size 4 single foot wire guide. The best I can do with my calipers measuring the dot is .26" This would be a size 6 Minima 4 F guide. Can anyone tell me if I am close

This rod will be used for large Rainbow, Brown, and Cutthroat Trout on the upper Snake River. I was told 7 or 8 Wt. I was thinking more 5 to 6 Wt. The customer was raised in the area and has fished it so I will go with what he wants. On another note: Can someone that has a size 4 single foot wire guide measure the ID. for me?

I was asked to build a 9' 7Wt. fly rod for a guy. I have never fished with him, or seen him cast. I am assuming that he is an intermediate caster from our conversation. I am looking at the Batson Rainshadow IF907-4, or the Pac-Bay Rainforest II RF2 907. I have never seen either of these blanks. I would build him a quickline, but don't know if he could get the most out of it. Looking for sug

Maryann: If you are talking about a set up using 3 stripping guides, the only chart I can find for an 11'6" spey rod shows this: From the tip top, 67 3/8", 81", 100 1/2". I have never built a rod this long, so don't have any personal experiance. Just fabout to finish a 9' 5Wt. Quickline fly rod. Used Minima 4 guides for the whole thing. I think it is going to be really

Maryann: I don't know why the differance happened with the larger running guides. I have been looking for my notes on casting it with the rod set up fpr the 2000 reel and the size 6 running guides. I can't find them. I just remember that the casIing distance dropped off for both reels and lines. I changed the guides from the Fuji to the Minima 4 guides, and picked up a foot or 2 with both

Maryann: I am working on a Batson SB 720-4 blank. I have been doing some testing on the 27X system. I want to use both a 1000 and 2000 size reel on this rod. the 1000 is spooled with 4# braid, and the 2000 has 8# braid, I set the rod up for the 1000 reel, and cast it 10 times along side a tape measure, and then changed to the 2000 reel, and cast it. I then set it up for the 2000 reel and

I have had some success in these situations by coating the whole rod, and then coming back and hiting the fisheye with a little more epoxy that has thickened up a bit. Sometimes this thicker epoxy has just enough hold to it to keep the fisheye from reforming. I have had less of these since starting to be really careful about keeping my hands and tools clean. I use the orange gritty soap made f

Steve: That is what my test wrap with white and black on the bottom and kelly green on top turned out like. The green was not as green as I wanted it. I can't remember if I used CP on the top wrap or not. I am going to try a couple more test wraps. When you use black and white for the bottom wrap the black basically doesn't show. What would happen with a white and gold bottom wrap, and kelly

I need to do my first Tiger wrap on a rod. I have done some test wraps, and think I have the "how to" down. I just can't figure out how to get the colors I need for this rod to work. This is a school themed rod, and school colors are kelly green, white, and gold. I need the kelly green to be the main color, and then the white, and finally the gold. I want to use Pearl white and go

Contact Mud Hole Tackle. Their catalog shows ice fishing rod kits with a small winding check. They may have them and just to catalog them. The other option would be a small O ring, or maybe you can find a small metal washer at a hardware or plumbing store that could be polished up and or painted.

Marryann: Can't find them in the current Pac Bay catalog. I did find them on line. I am doing a 9' 5 wt fly rod and a Batson SB740-4 spinning rod and am using the Minima guides for the first time. I just don't know if the size 4 rings in the Minima guides will work with the 5wt fly rod. I also want to use the black and chrome Minima 4 guides.
