Birchwood Casey flat black paint pen. Shake it up, prime the fiber tip, and paint it on. This stuff is quick drying, and since it was designed to withstand gun cleaning products, it will work with most rod finishes.

Thanks guys. I normally don't do rod repairs, but this is a special situation, so I took it on. I finally had the light bulb (dim as it normally is) go on in my head. I went to the rod makers web page, and found a picture of the rod. The hook keeper was down. I will finish it tomorrow.

I am doing a repair on a casting rod. This is the first casting rod I have ever had in my hands. I have to keep telling myself "The guides go on top". The problem is: when I tore the rod down, I didn't pay attention to which way the hook keeper was located. Does the hook keeper go on the top with the guides, or does it go down?

Skipp: I made contact with Bill Green the owner of Tooth Tamer rods. He is looking up the information on what tip top was used on your rod, and will get back to me. I will let you know what he has to say.

Skipp: now that I have shown the world of rod builders just how dumb I am, and spending some time searching both the internet, and my somewhat cobweb covered memory, I have a question for you. When you measured the size of the ring, did you measure the inside diameter of the ring, or the outside? This is a common mistake when sizing guides and tip tops. The guides are sized by the outside dia

Once again I screwed up. I was looking at the tube size in the catalog, and then looked again. These are sized in 64ths and not MM. how do you come up with a 5.5/64th of an inch? I tried. I am now really confused. Skipp: I will let you know if I get anything from my question to the "social" website.

Skipp: I had to do some searching on line, and then go to my hard copy of Anglers Workshop catalog. I ran across a post on a website from 2009 where one of the people from Tooth Tamer rods said that the guides were alconite. I also located a recent web page for Tooth Tamer on one of the social websites. I have posted a question there. Anglers Workshop shows a Fuji BMNAT tip top with a 6mm

Skipp: take a look at the Batson Alps tip tops. They show several tip tops with a 13/64" tube and 6mm ring in black (that is if I am reading the catalog right). I would give them a call just to make sure.

Skip: Do a search on the internet for the name on this rod. Their web site says they have a limited lifetime warrantee, and their is contact information on the web site. Someone there should be able to point you in the right direction on locating the tip top.

Scott: I talked to Angler's Workshop yesterday. They said they are getting the new Gudebrod thread in. Not all of the colors are available yet. I asked how it compared to the old stuff, and was told it looks and feels the same. I will order a couple os spools and see.

I called the number for Okuma today. talked to a guy in the customer service and repair department, I asked him what thread the factory used to wrap the Celilo rod? The answer to my question was: "Oh yea, that is the green rod. Looks like purple to me". Good enough, Gudebrod Maroon without CP, unless someone actually knows what thread Okuma wrapped this rod in. I am sorry if th

O.K., I messed up by not checking to see if this rod might have a long term warrantee, I tore into the rod that sells for $50 some odd dollars on the retail market. I am doing this for a friend and it is his favorite rod. He called me to ask if it would work to just drill holes in the reel seat, and shove some epoxy in the holes. I could have told him "Go for it", but told him I woul

Lance: This an older rod, and I have already removed the stripper guide, and hook keeper. I am not familiar with Okuma. Had this been a St. Croix, Sage, etc. I would have sent him to the factory. I was told that this rod was a Wally World special, and he only bought it for the reel that was on it. This is also one of those deals where a friend that I owe Big time refered the owner to me, an

I am working on an Okuma casting rod repair. I am not a casting rod guy, so this is the first rod I have had in my hands with a trigger style reel seat with the exposed blank. When I first talked to the guy, he said the reel seat was loose and spinning on the blank. I told him that to fix this the right way, everything from the rear grip forward would have to be removed, and then be re-glued,

If this is the blank I think it is, I have built several of them. They were all done in ProWrap Oak Leaf green. One was done with lime green metallic trim, one with copper metallic, one with silver metallic, and two with gold metallic trim. I did not use any CP with them.

I now have 12" of scrap blank wrapped to do a test. I have one section wrapped with black and pearl, one long section that is dark green and pearl, and another section that is the new Pro-Wrap Twist in green and silver.I marked the blank so that I could turn it 1/8 of a turn, and burnish with a ><>< motion, and then turn it an 1/8th, and burnish in a <><>motion. Since I have never seen a tiger wrap in person, and am having trouble visualizing all of this, I need to ask:: Where do the colors come from? I am wanting a green and white tiger wrap. some have suggested a black and white underwrap and a green overwrap. I was thinking that doing the underwrap in green and metallic pearl without cp, and then doing the overwrap in green with cp, would give me

I am doing a light spinning rod with split grip. I want to do a tiger wrap between the split. This rod will be wrapped in green and white purl metallic. I need suggestions for the colors I should use for the base wrap and the over wrap. I want the green and white to show through.

I have not tried building grips with checkerboard rings yet, so don't know if this will work for your problem. I have had great success cleaning cork and foam grips on well used rods, with dish soap and a soft toothbrush. Wet the toothbrush with water, pour the soap on the brush, and scrub the grip. if things get a little dry, wet the toothbrush again. Then rinse in water. You may have to d

Rich: Yes, I wrapped the first try in the opposite direction. The big problem is that I am not able to get the stripes to form in the base wrap (like the pictures of the base warp shown in the Rodmaker article). I may be trying to do this on a blank that is just too small in Diam. for it to work. I am sure there is something I am missing, and will not understand until I see the wrap done in p
