If you are fishing in the late fall and the winter then I would think that 6's are too small. I would got to at least 7's at the tip I agree that 25 is too big for your butt guide for a centerpin reel. I would go 20-16-12-10-10-8-8-8- and then 7's out to the tip.

I do not believe that there is an duty for a broken rod or for a replacement. I would send the rod back to Lorne Green "Loomis Canada"and let him decide .
Just my two cents

If you use a single cork ring at the front of the reel seat where is your hand going to be when you are fighting a fish. You need to use your one hand as the drag on the reel.

If you build the rod the way you are describing then by noon hour of the first day you fish it you will want to rebuild it. I would take the butt end of you blank and place it at your elbow withyour arm bent as if you were fishing. Where your pinky rests should be the front edge of your Islander reel. Mark that point on your blank and work from there.
You can adjust from there slightly

There are a few questions?
How long is your rear grip or how far from your front of the reel seat to the first guide. If this blank is pretty stiff in the bottom end you may not have to add any guides. I would not go any closer then 23" from the first guide to the reel seat.
You using a center pin or a spinning reel?

I would place my first guide 3- 31/2" from the tip and then add 1 inch to the spacing for each of the next guides. Tape them on and then static test the layout and tweak from there.
Are you using a spey blank for this? I have not seen a 17 foot blank for a float rod. Must be some prety big water you are fishing.

369. Re: Pistol Grip
I sure hope they come back with the flared end that St Croix used to sell in their CG-10 handle kit. I have a customer that has 6 rods all with pistol grips that have had 1" removed making them 3.5" long
Any one have any of the flared end grips laying around?

For a spinning rod of that size you will need a size 16 seat.

Hi
Has anyone used the green framed guides from Mudhole? Have you had any problems with the green fading or wearing off?
I have a customer that wishes to use these on a float rod but I have never used them and was wondering on durability.
Thank you.

It would be a great idea to put a link to your site or at least name it. Beats the guessing game.

I too like the RainShadow IST1562F in grey matte or green 2PC 13' Steelhead blank. But i do not like the rear grip to be less that 10" and a 6 inch foregrip. Take the blank in your hand as if you were fishing. Where your pinky is should be the front of the rim of your reel when the butt is even with your elbow.

Look under the Rainshadow line up for the 12/13 and this blank would be pretty close to the one Bill described

The amount of time you have spent trying to find out what went wrong would have paid for the extra 1 1/2 cc of epoxy. You are talking about a 100 - 300 dollar rod and you are worried about 50cents worth of epoxy.
I think you should just follow directions and get over it.
IMHO

I buy from the Custom Tackle all the time and I too use US mail. The only time I have to use UPS is when I am ordering 1piece blanks over 6' long. The mail service works well and you will maybe pay 5 bucks handling fees. You just have to be patient for the stuff to arrive.

Starting from the tip start at 3" and then add one inch to the spacing per guide.
tip 3" 7" 12" 18" 25" 33" and so on
tape guides on and then use static deflection to determine final settings of guides. Are you using M frame guides or V frame? Winter conditions or just fall and spring time fishing? Is he using a floatreel(center pin) or a spinning reel?

When I use a reel seat I use the wooden inserted seats from either Pac bay or Forecast in a size 17. You could also get a insert from Les. If you the wooden insert method you need the 17 so that it will fit onto the blank.

There is no duty on rod building materials coming from the US to Canada. You will be charged the GST. If you use the US postal service there is a 5 Dollar charge for processing at the border. If you use any of the other couriers expect to pay a 75 dollar service charge. I deal with Custom Tackle all the time and have had no problems.

I had my order in well before the show and Custom tackle had everything I needed packed up and ready to go. Then I started shopping again but did not need to buy any more blanks. Saved me over 100 dollars shipping costs.

As far as I know you can no longer get All Star blanks since they were bought out by shakespere last year.

The last 2 pistol grips I got from St Croix were not the wide bottom type.

I find that the Rainshadow has a better tip section while it has a very strong butt. Just my own personal feelings about the blanks. I also love the Olive green colour that is available in the Rainshadow.
The RS blanks are straight and the ferrule fit is very good. Quaility wise I dont think you can wrong with either one,

What length of blank are you looking for? And what line rating? I would strongly recommend the Rainshadow lineup of blanks.

387. The Show
I made it back finally from the show. It was 1750 miles of driving round trip and the return trip was in snow all the way. The show was great and I was very glad I went. I was very impressed with how friendly everyone was and were willing to spend the time to discuss products and methods. A big thank you to Bob from Custom Tackle, Todd from Lamiglas, the Batsons and Tom. You gents made the show

If it were me I would place the butt end so it was just at my elbow and then put the reel seat as if you were going to use a center pin reel. This should be 10 to 12 inches of rear grip. I know you said you wanted to use a spinning reel but you never know you may want to use the pin later on. This way its set up for the pin and a spining reel. I do not like the short rear grips when using a pin.
