Got some guide spacing measurments...Do these sound right for the 17' er? These are based on the first guide from the butt being 41 inches and using 16 guides. The guides will be Pac Bay Match hi-frame, or the new Forcast VS3 guides.

4, 8.83, 14.48, 20.95, 28.25, 36.38, 45.33, 55.1, 65.7, 77.13, 89.38, 102.45, 116.35, 131.08, 146.63, 163.0

Do these sound right? Any input from you more experienced rod builders would be welcomed...

imo..... your spacing out to far a the end i would throw in at least two more guides to shorten the spacing out ........

I was thinking the spacing was getting a bit far too...I'll throw in one more and see what happens. I gotta minimize the number of guides due to weight, or as you know, go to Titanium frames...$$$$$$$ KA-CHING!!! thanks for the input, as I will use it.

That spacing is a good start. Tape on the guides in that spacing, now follow the 'New Guide Concept Primer' and 'Static Guide Placement' to place each guide just exactly where it belongs according to the way This blank flexes. All spacing charts can do is approximate the correct guide positions. No two blanks, even those otherwise identical, will flex exactly the same. Ralph

If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again.

For weight and a better price take a look at the American Tackle Titan guides or even the REC Re-coil.
Another way to space them would be to put your first guide from the tip top at 4". Then add 1/4 " to say about 6-8-10 guides from there. Then start adding say 3/8 - 1/2 " to the rest. You will have to static test and adjust them. Got to figure 17 guides and add or take away.

There are a few questions?
How long is your rear grip or how far from your front of the reel seat to the first guide. If this blank is pretty stiff in the bottom end you may not have to add any guides. I would not go any closer then 23" from the first guide to the reel seat.

You using a center pin or a spinning reel?

Bills right about the rec recoils check those out .. ive been toying with float rods ahwile now line stick will occur more then often in the winter with low frame guides if spaced out to far...........but with a rod that long guides shouldent be a big issue adding 1 or two more guides... its balancing that baby out id rather fish with a little heavier rod in the back then a tip heavy rod.....imo........good luck with it though id like to see pics of it when your done...........should be able to cast a mile with it... biggest ive used was a 15 ft......tight wraps

I would go with the Fly type (BLAG type) guides for much of the rod. That will really help with the weight and are more than adequate for the job. I use them on musky rods with no problem.

Robert-/ Bill --I was thinking about the recoils as well, I just needd to do some searching for them...They are LITE!

I will post some pics of her when she's all done. Ya know, after 30+ years of fishing now, and I'm just staring to build my rods-I wish I would have started many years ago...But boy-o-boy is wrapping a rod fun and gratifying. I got my 7 year old wrapping a little too now...
