from my feeble perspective all of the points made have merit and the major reason I do not build except for family members and exceptional friends currently, Have requests from people who have seen my own rods and lliked them and want them until they find out how much i spent on componenets- but like I have told them it was for my own use and satisfaction but you can use cheaper componenets-

I am going back a few years on my recommendation for a steelhead spinning reel so bear with me. I would suggest a reel sizre comparable to the old mitchell 300 series. and use for main line around 12 lb test- I have fished for steelhead in WA for about 50 years and have seen it all. (from light gear 2 lb to 40 lb test) i have even guided for several years My prefernce is a good quality level

New configuration on the handle- it does help me cast about 10% to 20% further and more accurately. (Your claim to fame on this handle) Again best words I saw "CALL IT A CUSTOM" and leave it alone. Am willing to bet not many will notice if you don't say anything Just my $0.02 worth. Mark

Try Grizzly tools- they seem to have all of the oddball threads and in stock- 3 or 4 jaw chucks- I bought the 4 jaw 5" 3/4 X 16tpi chuck for about $50.00 # H8041-4 jaw chucks are more accurate than 3 jaw for centering.

Just my $0.02 worth. I bought a couple of feet of most common sizes surgical tubing. With a decent pair of scissors (usually first aid type (Blunt nose) I just cut what I need off. These range from up and down from about 1/8 inch wide, (just eyeball the width of the band). If not tight enough (mind you not tight but only snug is what you are after) then I will double them over and place my

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder***author unknown " *** how true!!! I like to have my rods catch someones eye-when asked where/what store it was bought, I respond I built it and usually I am told @#$%&- I am no more than a beginner, believe me I already have known that for more than 30 days let alone 30 years. I have noticed that my grand childrens fishing rods get a lot of

Jeremy I have built a couple of rainshadow steelhead blanks- I used graphite reel seats (colder weather)=colder hands with aluminum. Used Karrys suggested guides, Think they turned out fairly well, although I did not use trigger handles.. These are set up for casting reels anyways. If I can make it work I will post the pictures over on the picture board. pictures are in my photos These

I suggest a wet rag wrapped around the handle in the area you are trying to protect then very carefully apply the heat. You should be able to remove the butt cap in very short order (seconds AND NOT minutes)

Roger Most likely your counter top is not made of plywood but mdo. It has no real inherit strength alone. 2X6 @12 foot long will not stay straight-even my 8 foot bench did not do that and I was hoping it would (I used a set of modified relloading bench plans with material sizes and grades up graded did not work as well as I had hoped for, although it is straight and strong) I would support b

Find a hand spring clamp that will fit the trigger & grip and use for off/on and it comes off easily in case of disaster. Something similar like the one below Mark

I am fairly new to the rod building community after a 25+ year absence that is. I am not a professional by any stretch of imagination, but that being said everyone who sees my finishes likes them. I use 20 brushes for .99 (thats right ninty nine cents). They come in 6 sizes (artist paint brush set) #1 through #6. 2 or 3 uses and then usually off to the garbage. If allowed I will post the link t

I just was told of a very simple method for a handle and not being real smart I did not even think about it. Use a handle with slip rings. Just looked at my fenwick packrod (Model FF 70-4) and it has both a flyreel seat and slip rings on one handle and does not use the reversible handle. Highly intelligent people on all of these rod building sites Thank you Mark

Looking to build 4 or 5 piece pack rods in spinning/fly combo's. I would like to make them like the old (aluminum tube) Wright & McGill trailmasters (reversible combo handle/grip). Max line rating for mono is going to be 6lb test- Not sure about the flyline rating but am guessing about 2 or 3 weight? Will be using spinning or spincast reels. Unsure of flyreel size. Any and all suggestions

BARGAIN Box's in several sizes for decent prices and grits. "Klingsporwoodworking.com" I have used their products for several years on my woodworking projects and find this the best way to buy sandpaper and as for quality it is great. I am not affiliated in anyway, just a loyal customer who likes a good product and bargain.

Also look at the IST blanks by Batson- These seem to be an extremely nice blank-I am in the process of building 2 of these for casting (level wind). Just finished 2 of the XST's one 1141F and 1143F. I am still learning to wrap again after a 25 to 30 year break. Now just another spendy hobby. Grandkids all have new ultralite rods-Daughterin law, sons etc well you get the point.

If I was doing the repair, the job would be done correctly for all loose guides. Even if I can only feel good about charging for the 2 missing guides. A little thread and finish, small amount of labor for free goes a long ways. Bad mouth words are never a good thing. Just my $.02 worth. Mark
