Many very, very stout rods featured pistol grips as well. But back in the 60's and 70's, the general length was 5-1/2 to 6 feet. Even shorter in the preceding decades.

They were popular, and pretty much standard, on bass casting rods for at least a couple decades. They were an offshoot of the standard straight, but short, casting handles used since the early 1900's until the late 1970's. I believe FeatherWeight may have been the first to utilize an actual "pistol" grip on their handle sometime in the mid-1970's. Perhaps a bit earlier - Gene Bullard d

I feel sure Super Z is what he meant. They're beautiful.
Components can be sized either way. Most of our tops, which we size by 64ths, are sized by mm by the manufacturers.

Yes.
RodMaker Volume 9 #6 has all the important details.
You might also do a search here and pick up some information. It has been discussed at some point or another.

I've seen the ferrules and they're quite good. Precision pieces.

16596. Re: PB Minima guides?
I talked with Bob McKamey this morning and have a pretty good understanding of the model #'s now, but I can't direct you to any online page on the Pacific Bay site that has those numbers listed. But they are available and your best bet is to call a dealer who stocks the Pacific Bay line up and have them set you up over the phone.

16597. Re: Spiral guide set up??
Offsetting the first guide so the line enters the reel along the true 0 degree axis is a component of the Revolver Wrap. RodMaker readers will be aware of it but some others may not.

Not sure what REC offers, but you can certainly make your own.

If the blanks did not arrive in the same shipment, then something other than shipping damage is probably the culprit. There is the chance of a bad design on that particular blank (if so, you're not alone).

At what distance are you going to be fishing it?
Pick a spinning rod blank rated for 1/16th ounce casting lure weight. That will put you in the ballpark.

How far apart are the 0 and first 180 degree guides? If they're less than about 9 to 11 inches, or so, (Bumper falls 4 to 5 inches between those) then you have a Simple Spiral with a Bumper guide that will keep the line off the blank but not experience any side loads.
If those first guides are farther apart than that, you have a single 90 degree transition system. It also works well, but the

Glad to hear it works well for you. From the photos I can't tell if you have a Simple Spiral or a single 90 degree transition spiral. The distance between the ) and 180 degree guides isn't plain to see. Both will work, but with the latter you will have some side load on the 90 degree guide.

If these are first quality blanks with decals/labels, return them to the manufacturer and let them make the call. There could be a defect, or you may have blanks that were dinged at the same spot in shipping, etc.

16604. Re: mandrel question
You only need the center bore on one end, not both.
Chuck the mandrel up and run the live center up snug. Turn the lathe on and watch the mandrel - does it run true? It may help if you move your tool rest close to the mandrel so you can more easily see if there is any discernible "wobble" between the mandrel and the rest. A tiny amount is okay, but any great amount is something you

16605. Re: pac bay epoxy mixer
If you go too fast, the ball will be overcome by the viscosity of the epoxy and will turn with it, or, create bubbles. The ideal speed for a mechanical mixer is going to be around 18 RPM, give or take a few RPM either way.

16606. Re: Rod Lathe/ tom kirkman
The only lathe I recall being anywhere in that issue is in the article on the Mobile Tool Stand. If that's the one, you're looking at a custom unit assembled from several pieces, most of which were sourced from Renzetti and Taig. I assembled it specifically for turning grips, outside.

16608. Re: pac bay epoxy mixer
It won't. Either will work - the key is to have the right weight for the viscosity of the liquid you're mixing. Not all epoxies are the same and temperature makes a difference. Getting the right weight mixing ball is covered in the article.

Most likely the mineral spirits.
If your can of adhesive is relatively fresh, there will be no need to thin it and results should be very good.

Roger,
That I can't say - if the concrete sealer is solvent based urethane acrylic, it might well be. It was my understanding that the product Scott sells is not water based. The one you list plainly says it is a water based acrylic.
Scott is the only one that can really say what it is, or isn't.

I can't comment on thinning the adhesive - it's something I've not done nor recommended in the article. The adhesive needs to be very thick in order to gain sufficient purchase on the flock.

16617. Re: pistol grip cork
We outlined how to make your own attachment for chucking pistol grips in a past issue of RodMaker. The tool from Backlash is even more spiffy and for what it costs may be your best bet.
You can always leave the grip off until everything else on the rod is finished. Installing the pistol grip can indeed be the last step.

16619. Re: pistol grip cork
The pistol grip types are not bored all the way through. So you either shim to fit the blank, or if the bore needs to be enlarged, you do so with a non-tapered reamer. The grip is then slid onto the blank butt from the butt end.

16620. Re: High Build Problem
It's doubtful that anything is wrong with your finish. Epoxy doesn't go bad unless you put something in the bottles that's not supposed to be there.
If you can provide a photo of what you have on the wraps there, it would help us better understand what you're dealing with.
