High Build Problem

After putting on the second coat of Flex Coat High Build the epoxy started to coagulate. It looks like someone poured paint over a ball. I thought maybe the temperature (68) was too cold. Today I put a third coat to repair the second coat at (80) with the same results. Today was better, but it is still not right. Any suggestions?

I'd sand it down, then make my next batch of epoxy making really sure the mix ratios are exactly right.

Before applying it I would warm it up a bit with a heat gun or hair dryer.

It goes on thin, this way, so you may have to repeat several times.

Others may have more refined recommendations.....

Chip,
How long have you had the finish?
I wonder if something may have gone bad with the finish.

Before doing anything else with that finish, I would suggest that you put both containers of your finish in a pan of hot water for 20 minutes to heat and thin the mixture. Then, really shake or mix up each container very very well.

Then, before going back to your rod, mix up a small batch and apply to a piece of scrap blank - let dry for 24 hours and check the results.
If these results are bad, I would pitch the finish and pick up a new shipment.

Obviously make sure that you are doing an exact 50:50 mix by volume and that you have mixed for at least 120 seconds before applying.

Good luck
Roger

It's doubtful that anything is wrong with your finish. Epoxy doesn't go bad unless you put something in the bottles that's not supposed to be there.

If you can provide a photo of what you have on the wraps there, it would help us better understand what you're dealing with.

Thanks all for the advice. I think I will heat the epoxy and try to get a final finish.

Thank you
