16051. Re: Red Blank
When blank color becomes the priority, the customer has to understand that his options become severely limited. He just went from a possible 200 blank possibilities, down to perhaps just 1 or 2.
Your only other option is to buy a blank and paint it.
Coming from a time when rod blanks were mostly grey or black only, we got our colors from our thread wraps or handle colors. The blank was cho

It will be a while before they are available. A few of the sponsors here will be carrying them and no doubt will announce when they have some in stock.

16053. Re: Travel to Expo
If you're on the main line between New York and New Orleans, the travel is direct with no layovers anywhere.
Other than that, it's just like air travel - you may have to change trains or lay over for a few hours. You do the same thing with the airlines if your flight isn't direct to GSO.

I lease a lot for the vendors to park their trucks and trailers in. We can accommodate a few motorhomes, just check with me a few weeks prior to the event so we can work it out.
There is also a nice campground for motorhomes and trailers at the City's Oak Hollow Park Campground, which is about 3 miles north of the Showplace.

I would also assume that the European Match Rods are about the longest in use.
For length and weight, I'd think the Ulua blanks for Hawaiian surf fishing are about the most substantial out there.

It would appear that both Dr. Bill Hanneman and Gary Loomis will be on the seminar team for the 2010 event. I'll confirm this shortly once we nail everyone down.

You're onto the Carolinian there, not the Crescent, although that will get you here, too. The route is not quite as direct however. I believe that one travels through Raleigh and then up through Richmond.
So actually you have at least 2 options as both the Crescent and the Carolinian serve High Point. The train station is across the street from the hotel.

16062. Travel to Expo
I got a call from Joy Dunlap yesterday. He informed me of his plans to attend the Expo in February. While we were talking something came up that he didn’t know about and which surprised me, although I guess it shouldn’t. Coming from a railroad family, I tend to know more about train service than the average person, I guess.
Joy lives in Birmingham, AL. As it happens, Birmingham is on the

JK Fisher closed a decade ago. Winston and Orvis make their own blanks and have done so for about a decade each, at least. Winston had blanks made at G.Loomis for a few years (these were not Loomis models, however).

You have more than "something" - you have the world's largest custom rod building event, period.
The 2010 event will be the largest in history. Let's concentrate on that for now and worry about 2011 the next year.

16068. Re: Batson's site
Bill,
Let me throw this at you - the Batson site is memory intensive. If your browser is an older version or you do not have enough memory dedicated to that browser, it could be that it simply does not have the ability to load the full website. This would result in a memory overload and an error message of some sort.

16072. Re: RodMaker Volume 12 #4
The CCS was already simple (the original "how-to" was only something like 4 paragraphs long). But it contained all the background research which put a lot of people off. So the updated article won't have any of that. You can get through it in just a few minutes.

You can cover it with anything that will easily hold up to your rod holders and not create any problems with getting the rods out of the holders when under pressure.
You might want to consult with Mike Pederson at Riley Rods about his foam-core, carbon-skinned grips. He's using these just as you propose to do with the grips on your rods. It's one more option to consider.
Beyond that, the

An over-sleeve will be your absolute best bet, particularly in that upper, very small diameter tip section.

The cents to ERN figure will never be completely linear.
Dr. Hanneman will be at North Fork Composites this fall helping them with some things. The URRS could easily be expanded a bit more if needed. It will largely depend on what the manufacturers feel they need.

16078. RodMaker Volume 12 #4
The new issue of RodMaker is printing now. Out of the many articles within, there are 4 that I think will be of particular interest to most rod builders.
First is the SBSS seat which we provide full instructions on making. This is a creation of JP Timberlake and offers the custom rod builder something that his or her customers can't get in a commercially made rod. At first glance it looks di

16079. Re: Blank Extension
A scrap section of rod blank may be your best bet, although it's not always easy to find in just the right size.
If you have a Fastenal company store in your area, they offer a huge selection of tubing in a wide variety of sizes. Aluminum works well but depending on the application it can be a little on the heavy side.

16080. Re: Payne 100 Guides
If it were me, I'd go something like #12, #8 and then snakes in all the same size. You don't need all those different sizes - they do nothing for you other than add a little unnecessary weight.
However, if you put the guides that you have on the rod, you'll find it will work just fine. Don't expect to gain much of anything, if anything, from the other set.
