I have no idea what you've read on the subject, but the original articles as they appeared in RodMaker Magazine are on the online library page here. They both answer your question about the tightness of the base wrap and the importance of disturbing that layer through burnishing. In fact, they go into quite a bit of detail on that issue. ............

You can set the butt guide where ever you want. The thing to remember is that on a reel with a level wind the line will move back and forth from side to side of the butt guide. On a spiral wrap, it will hold mostly on the side that the line is spiraled to. This means that in certain cases with hard pulling plugs it could stack heavy on one side of the reel spool. Thus, some builders will shift t

Properly placed, there is never any side load nor torque on the bumper guide. The danger in placing a ring around the blank is that the blank changes shape as it flexes. If the ring constricts that change of shape, you'll have a failure at that point. Just something to be aware of. ...........

No, it will have no effect on the action of the rod. Action refers to where the rod initially flexes. However, it will have an effect on the speed of the rod. Speed refers to how quickly the rod reacts and recovers. The more weight you add to the rod, particularly in the upper 1/2 of its length, the more you reduce the efficiency of the rod and slow the reaction and recovery speed of the rod.

It doesn't matter. Torque is rotational force. To counter that you'd have to employ a spiral wrap. Generally if you're running a forward clamp you'd have the nuts to the front so the clamp can ride on the threaded section just forward. Otherwise you have to install a tuna block between the seat and foregrip. The stability of the reel in the seat isn't going to be changed by putting the nuts

Bill Boettcher, No, I would not say that. ............... Most likely there is some defined standard for surface hardness and/or rebound required in order for a baseball bat to pass muster (continued use of wood bats in the major leagues have spared most ballparks from becoming obsolete in the way that say, golf courses have become). By managing to soften the surface of the composite ba

No. The more fatigue introduced the less durable it's going to be. If you want a more durable rod, you'll have to switch to different fibers or a different structure. ........

All materials have a "fatigue life" and over time and use will fatigue. This results in a loss of power or stiffness. Modern graphite rods have a fatigue life that is thousands of times greater than older glass rods and will withstand tens of thousands of stress cycles without any noticeable loss of properties. It is doubtful that anyone is ever going to wear out a graphite fishing rod

That's a better photo. I'd have to back off the idea that it's black and gold. The brown and gold is more likely after seeing that. Not sure how close you can match it with modern thread. ............

I believe you have the old Gudebrod Varigated gold/black thread. A little hard to make out from the photo. Do you know who the maker of the rod is? It looks like an older glass rod which would put it in the right era for that thread. .............

When blank color becomes the priority, the customer has to understand that his options become severely limited. He just went from a possible 200 blank possibilities, down to perhaps just 1 or 2. Your only other option is to buy a blank and paint it. Coming from a time when rod blanks were mostly grey or black only, we got our colors from our thread wraps or handle colors. The blank was cho

If you're on the main line between New York and New Orleans, the travel is direct with no layovers anywhere. Other than that, it's just like air travel - you may have to change trains or lay over for a few hours. You do the same thing with the airlines if your flight isn't direct to GSO. ..............

I lease a lot for the vendors to park their trucks and trailers in. We can accommodate a few motorhomes, just check with me a few weeks prior to the event so we can work it out. There is also a nice campground for motorhomes and trailers at the City's Oak Hollow Park Campground, which is about 3 miles north of the Showplace. .............

You're onto the Carolinian there, not the Crescent, although that will get you here, too. The route is not quite as direct however. I believe that one travels through Raleigh and then up through Richmond. So actually you have at least 2 options as both the Crescent and the Carolinian serve High Point. The train station is across the street from the hotel. ..........

I got a call from Joy Dunlap yesterday. He informed me of his plans to attend the Expo in February. While we were talking something came up that he didn’t know about and which surprised me, although I guess it shouldn’t. Coming from a railroad family, I tend to know more about train service than the average person, I guess. Joy lives in Birmingham, AL. As it happens, Birmingham is on the
