Hey gang, I need some help on this!
Years ago when Dale Clements had his store, he sold a form to use on pistol grip handle rods in the dryer. It looked kinda like a kitchen whisk on larger. Front part clamped on to the pistol grip right behind the reel seat and the back came back to a centered plug. You could turn the rod straight in the dryer rather than lopsided. I really like using the dryers I've made, but the pistol grips I have to use another dryer. Any of you know where I can find the Clements form or do you have a solution with something you've made? Thanks for this rather long winded question!!! John Re: pistol grip form for dryer

Okay, let me see if I can describe this in words alone. Take a wood dowel that will fit into your dryer chuck. On opposing sides of the dowel, affix a couple of long, flat metal straps. Make them long enough to reach up past the offset area of the pistol grip. You could screw these into the dowel or just affix them with rubber bands. The two straps are then spread slightly and place on either side of the pistol grip. They should reach up close to the rear of the seat area. Fasten these to the pistol grip with rubber bands. Now everything should be in line and you can turn the assembly on your rod dryer.

I had made mine out of a coat hanger. Cut and bend so the ends fit alongside each side of the handle. Align with the blank, tape to the handle. Compress the bent end to get it close about 1/2" wide. When bent about 5" long. Re: pistol grip form for dryer

John,
Same idea but made from PVC 1†pipe. (Love that PVC pipe) I cut a 1†PVC pipe about 7†long then cut two ½†fingers about 3 ½†long and 180 degrees from each other then put a little duct tape on the fingers to protect the handle. I also put piece of cork in the end of the pipe so it will mount easier in the dryer or lathe. I posted a picture in the tools section. Lynn Re: pistol grip form for dryer

Another option;
and what I do some times. I will put the grip on so the blank stops at the back edge of the handle or just short then when I need to turn the rod. I insert another blank up in the blank on the rod I’m working on then like putting together a two piece rod. Then clamp that blank into my chuck. It will hold most of the time. Some times I’ll have to put a little masking tape on, wrapping it around the handle down onto the blank chucked into the wrapper/drier After all is done I just put a little cork plug into the hole in the end of the handle. Its simple, quick and I don’t have to worry about centering handle in makeshift holder. Re: pistol grip form for dryer

Heres my two cents....As above a piece of 1" p.v.c. appx 4 inches long , two pieces plumbers tape , screw plumbers tape into p.v.c.,
use elec. tape on plumbers tape for protection of rods handle, a couple of good heavy duty rubber bands and you are all set. The plumbers tape is very plyable. I copied the idea from Clemens tool which I also still have. Always the better mouse trap. Tight Lines Tight Wraps Fishin'Stix by Fred Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
