I agree with the packing, last expo I went to see Mark Crouse's demonstration and he said it from the very begining, do NOT start packing any threads until you have at least 4 or 5 threads down, if you start packing immediatly you will move your layout thread. I have been doing it this way since and now all my wraps stay straight.

Another suggustion would be to build one from a 7' 2 or 3 wt fly rod blank, I have one made that way and love it. Also have a 6' 6" Shikari ultra lite and that is my most favorite, we are actually going on a river float trip Monday to fish just for blugill/red breast and the like, it is a blast.

I have a question about powder coating guides though, I also have my own powder coating equipment and have done quite a bit of various materials especially for motorcycles and hot rods, question is, how are you preping your guides before coating, sandblasting of sorts or just a good cleaning?

Thanks for all the reply's, I have almost finished shaping my grips and I think tomorrow night I will start applying the Tru Oil.
Other thing is, will my red burl still look red? or will it just turn darker?
Thanks

36. Tru oil question
I have done a few searches but still can not answer my own question.
I have not used Tru Oil yet but I will be using it in the next few days to seal my grips, question is this, I am using a mixture of natural cork, red burl and burnt cork on the same grip, what would be the procedure for doing this ? I read the bottle several times but does this apply to cork the same as wood?
Thanks, Rob

As the topic states, I have a 7' 3" 3wt 2 piece blank that I want to cut down to 6' 8", question is, if I cut 3" off the tip and the remainder off the butt what will happen to my 3 wt? will it stay the same as far as line weight or will it make it too stiff and will be more like a 4 weight instead? Hope this makes sence.
Thanks Rob

41. Flag wrap
I am going to do an American flag butt wrap on my sons rod, I have done quite a few diamonds, chevrons and boxes but never this one, I have the info on how its done but my question is what would be the layout and spacing, maybe spacing like a chevron?
Thanks Rob

Sounds good, I think I will give the rubber band a try first then I will try Bill's idea.
Forum: rodboard 15 years ago

That sounds pretty good, you think the rubber band is that strong where it will keep the rod from spinning?

I have a question, I am looking for a way to hold my rod while wrapping so I can release my hand, especially when I am wrapping guides fairly tightly (hand wants to give out). I love the wrapper that I have now, it's a 7' bed with rollers. I built this one last year and have wrapped a lot of rods on it and no, I do not want to go to a power wrapper, just not my style. I am just looking for some i

46. Tiger question
I do have the Rod maker magazine on this article but the question I have is this, how loose or rather tight should the first wrap be to burnish it in several directions to get the effect of the tiger wrap.
Thanks Rob

I am going to try my hand at wrapping one of my All Star 7.5' blanks in a spiral wrap. My question is this, is there a formula for figuring out the guide spacing for an acid wrap, I did a search but did not really come up with what I am looking for.
Thanks Rob

Thanks for the help, I think I am going to try and build something along the lines of what Mike has, by looking at it again I do believe I may be able to put washers under the cork to make thinner rings if I want.

That's about exactly what I was talking about, one question though Mike, how do you adjust for different thickness sizes or is it just set for 1 size.
Thanks again.

Trying to pick some brains here, what have any of you guy's come up with for slicing cork rings? I like to build my own cork handles and would like to make some small width rings, maybe 1/8" or less, I done a search but could not find any help, I am sure some of you have come up with some homemade somethings I could build.
Pictures would be a plus,
Thanks again, Rob

Thanks for the reply's, I understand what your saying Tom and I think you are correct, I think the DPSD style seats just "look" too big. I am getting ready to order some more supplies and I think I will get the seat Jim recomended and see how that looks and feels.
Thnaks again.

Going to start building myself a couple of ultra light rods and was looking to get a few recomendations from some of guys.
I have a couple of UL blanks that are 5' long that is probably the lengh I will leave them and I will also make my own cork handles as usual but my question is this, these will be spinning rods and I was wondering about what size and style reel seat I should use? I have neve

I too believe it is an 8wt but I was trying to be sure, problem is I don't have a use for a rod this heavy, normaly I use a 7wt for bass and such, I may have a friend I can build it for though.
thanks again.

I was going to ask a couple questions about the tiger wraps as well but instead I just went ahead and ordered a copy for myself, sometimes I think that is much easier than trying to figure it out by what you read and try.
