Thanks every one for spreading some light on the subject. The laminate sold in some of the links posted on this thread may well work as they are down to 0.3mm in thickness so I will look into that. Dave Hauser-as it happens, I live in the Philippines and capiz products are easily found anywhere here. There may be somthing in their methods and proceedures that can be transfered to abelone-I will

I have found from past experience that some colors seem to have a greater tendency to "Fuzz" more than others, and this seems to be even more prevalent with NCP-Gudebrods Golden Rod is one of my favorite colors, and sadly one of the worst in my experience, as is black NCP at times. I must add though that Gudebrod produce a first quality product that is in my opinion about the best in

Me too. I was thinking of posting the same question a couple of days ago. I have seen photos of this stuff on rods and to me it is the peak of beauty. I have researched this a bit on the internet looking for sheet, alas all I could find was the real thing which is the cracked shell itself and looks like a mosaic. It is supplied in relatively small sizes of a4-5 inches sqare that are a little les

Yup, thats correct Tom, At least the element of color choice can be readily reproduced to see if they work together in a fraction of the time to do a real trial, and no waste of materials-A reference library of color mix swatches can easily be produced as once the initial layout is complete, which took me about ten minutes, the changing of the color mix takes about five minutes per pattern. Hi all, Dave, I just tried to do a similar experiment using Corel draw, only I did not have to print it off to see. It works to a greater degree. I certainly could see the color outcome, and the "moire" effect was very visible, but very uniform. It only took me 10 minutes to compleat a 50 turn section-For sure it allows you to see the results close enough to the real thing to know what

Hi Dale, For an #80 I would go for a full set of rollers, but thats me. As an alternative there are the Fuji RSG series in Sic. These are a true three legged patern, one guide foot at the front and two at the rear that are bound on the side of the blank-if you look at the model youl see what I mean. These are designated by the manufacturer as guide for this line class. They are very stable and w

Hi guys, I need some encouragement to give me the confidence to take the plunge and break with tradition.. I’m very seriously thinking of doing a spiral wrap-its for a deep jigging rod. It’s a Jigging Master Terminator 400g blank, only 5’ 8” long mostly being used in 150 meters plus of water for dogtooth, amberjack, groupers and snapper, using 50-80lb braid with jigs that average over 300

Thanks guys, You,ve made my day. I just wasn't sure so the question had to be asked. I am doing doing a mega weave on a GT popping rod that I guess will be about 40 hrs work on the weave alone, and I have already put in about 30 hrs on the wrap and doing the weave co-ordinates, so I did not want to ruin that with uneven epoxy. If only I could use this forum for answers to all of lifes challen

Hi Guys. I need to build a drying motor for epoxying my rods. I,m not selling rods, just buildfor my own use so I dont need anything too fancy. Living in the Philippines has advantages, but that does not include finding motors suitable for a finishing unit. I managed to get an oven rotissary motor after three days of tracking around looking for a supplier. My problem is that it is only 2.3rpm. I

Not tried them yet Kerry, but soon some should arrive here in the Philippines-I recently ordered some from Acid Rod, reel seats, guides for my Jigging and popping rod projects. I'm looking forward to seeing them. Would any one in Singapore take on distributorship, that seems to be the Asian center for rod building, and alot easier for us to get to from Manila ? Hi Tom. I have just been trying your solution of cutting the threads to the length required to make a pass on the wrap. I found I need about 3 feet for up and down, using 3 threads-nought but twisted tangles. the more you try to stroke out the twist the worse it gets and 30 minutes to make two passes. The ends of the thread need tension. even 6 inches twist up. I never remember Gudebrod being th

Thanks guys, You have not let me down, I knew there was an answer and you gave it to me.. If the problem is really so bad that I cant get anywhere without twisting then I shall opt for Toms solution as it is absolute-however there is some labor in cutting the threads. I will certainly give Lou's solution a go first-it makes a @#$%& of alot of sense to me 1 Thanks guys, Thank you so much. Earl.

Hi Guys, I thought I would throw this problem out there-I am havng big problems with the Gudebrod "A" thread that I am using whilest doing a diamond wrap, twisting up very badly straight off the spools ! This is most frustrating and is making the simultaneous use of 3 or more threads a major chore. I have not built any rods for a few years now, but took it up again recently. I dont

Hi Cliff, One coat finish is produced by Epoxy Coatings Company in Union City, California. This stuff was my favourite back in the eighties and nineties. it is quite similar to flex coat. It tends to "fish eye" a little easier than flex coat, but gives better adhesion, has less yellowing, and is tougher. I also found that it has less bubbles in a heavy coating. It has been desingned for

Hi Jan, I hope I can give you some idea here. I dont have any experience with the blank you are using, so I cant comment, but the brand is often highly recomended here. I have built many 11'6" fly rods for customers. My first questions to you would be what style of fly fishing are you doing, and what style of casting will you be using. Most 11' 6" rods I have built in this weight ran

This thread has sparked some heartfelt reactions and inteligent input, which I believe varifies a need for some sort of organization to take the helm to promote and lead the custom rod building profession to be just that-A recognised profession. If the RBI can fill this need, and Joe Douglas is willing to head up such an organisation, then he has my support, in any way I can provide it ! An

This is a no nonsense site, with no nonense information available to all, young and old, the short and the tall, the novice and the pro, the Davids and the Goliaths. We all benefit.. Anyone with any interest in fishing rods will find no better advice on rods in any other place. Its all available here, and as such this forum is the oracle in my view. It will take an almighty effort to replace it-bu

Hi Antony, I just thought I would add my 2 penneth worth of thought and some limmited experience here. I have built quite a few of these big trolling rods, including an 80 that landed a 1635 lb blue taken by Mike Houston off Portugal back in 93. As for the fish, they should not be under estimated-they have evil abilities to find the faults in tackle. If your client is serious about having a cra

Hi Tom, Thanks for the pointer. I have to agree with you that AFTCOs just plain work. The proof is that they have been around for so long I have kind of got bored with them. I just wanted to see if there was anything that would allow me to get some creative juices flowing, and not rattle. At least I know I wont go wrong if I use the AFTCOs !

Hi Guys, I,m hoping some of you can give me some pointers on a couple of Sabrer GT5080s that I picked up recently. I dont know much about them but they're 5'6" graphite strokers. I want to build them for fishing with braid for yellowfin here in the 50 to 100kg class. I already have the butts sorted, but was wondering what the best guides for these might be. I've narrowed the choice down t

Thanks Tom, Sound advise ! I think Billy also writes sense about the salinity of tropical water. wether its higher salinity, or higher chemical reactivity from higher temperatures still remains as a question, but the result is the same. I also have to admit also that in each case the rings were not of top quality brands, even if they are Sics and stainless ! Perhaps I should pay the extra ship

Hi Guys, Just came back from a trip with the fly rods-When I was getting off the boat I noticed that the stripping guide center had popped out on my 12 wt. This can happen from time to time I know, I had it happen once in the UK in about 20 years, but I have had a total of time 7 times here in the Philippines in the last 4 years on different rods. Each time the encasing frame has burst open arou

Well guys, if I may venture into murky waters and join the fray. I have had aquite a few years experience working in a barter/cash market for rods. I virtually fitted out my house building rods on a barter system, and I rarely had to pay much for car maintenance !!! I had many great customers who like me were cash strapped, but could offer services etc. i got many jigs, rigs, racks and mac

A good point Mark, thanks for the tip. I have to confess I had not thought of this, but you have certainly brought the point home to me. Apart from upsetting other anglers for having to put up with the inconvenience these things can cause on a busy boat, there is a conservation point that comes to mind. I live in the Philippines, and deep jigging is taking off here. People are catching some re

Hi Guys. I'm new to the forum, but have some experience building rods. This place is the mecca for rod building information-and a good education! In response to Daves question, I would wonder if using kevlar as a guide wrap may be akin to the crushing coils of a techno python ! I have worked quite a bit with Kevlar thread, for flies, and assist hooks-there is no give in this stuff, it feels l
