Is it possible that it is a Fuji Cermet-I do have a couple wth black frames. They were also used on the old Orvis Trident fly rods back in the 90's. These can be obtained from Fuji, but as a special order from their distributors.

I have not found any of the rod component suppliers charging anything other than actual shipping costs. I have never been charged any handling fees by them either. But the shipping companies ? I don't know how they justify their charges. I often have to pay three to four times the actual puchase cost getting stuff shipped internationaly to me. Of course it depends on weight, but also the size-it

Hi Phil. Use low speeds when drilling and use a block to drill into if the holes are going right through the material. Parafin is a good lube for this. For cutting use a fine toothed blade with lube.

Thanks for letting us know Herb. I think you have brought up quite an inportant point here. It would be interesting to see if there is any difference between manufacturers?

Does anyone know where I might be able to get a spool of Talbot size 60 thread in black preferably, or any dark color. I realy like this thin thread for my fly rods. I used to have some years ago and would like to find some more if I can. I'm just hoping some of you here may know where to get a spool or two, or a bulk spool would be great. Thanks. Earl Hamilton.

Hi Phil, I don't think you have to worry, a 6 rpm motor is fine for curing epoxy. However, you can probably have the origional motor rewound and that will suit the British voltage too-that what I did with my machine when I worked out of Wales. My machine did the same as yours, the drying motor burnt out in a day. That drying machine is still working in Swansea after nearl 20 years with the same

Hi Stuart. You will be asking a lot from one rod, though I believe a #9wt is a good place to start. Its a bit heavy for bones, good for small trevally's, queens, threadfin, and many others, but if your after better GTs (12kg and up) then you will probably need to go to a #12. Will you be fishing from the shore or boat, and what region will you do most of your fishing. The answers to what weight

Well I think there are a few things out there that are at least some improvement. Apart from the Carrot fiber technology which if nothing else is different, there are a few things I would regard as at least good improvements. One that comes to mind are the new Fuji K-series guides. With their titanium frames, not new, Alconite inserts, new (at least with titanium) and there angled posture, not

I have not handled the EVA from Batson, but I have worked with the Acid Rod EVA and will second what Billy says-I personaly prefer hard EVA when I'm not using cork.

I've just spent most of this evening playing around with a couple of sets that I already have from Mudhole. They are indeed beauriful. I have the double footed (TKWAG) and the single micros (TKTAG). I have a few projects coming up with some inshore casting/spinning rods and some fly rods. they are beautiffully finished right down to the feathered/chamfered feet. They have fluted legs that add to

Hi everybody and thanks for taking the time to answer. There is some very interesting information here when it comes to looking at blanks that are normally suggested for use in fields other than casting the fly-I wish there was a bit more info on CCS data on the blank manufacturers web sites, and I should take the time to understand a little more about it too. First I should have mentioned earli

Any one know where to get 8' fly blanks in a #9/10wt ? I'm looking for one for close quarter heavy fly action on reef dwellers. I've been looking around but dont see anything specific. Or should I be looking at a spin blank for something around 3/8-1/2oz casting weight-it'll need some guts in the butt ! Cheers guys. Earl.

Ok, it seems that there are pro's and cons. I will go ahead and put several coats on as the general opinion seems to er in favor for toughness, and if I dont like the way it looks I'll put on a coat of epoxy over the top. Thanks for all your input guys. Earl.

I'm planning to use permagloss to finish a couple of blue water fly rods, or should I stick to two part epoxy finishes-is PG up to the task? will it take abrasion well, and how good is its adhesion to the blank and strength to hold the singlefoot guides in place? I don't have much experience with PG. one other thing-I will be using it in a very humid 90 plus degree climate, will this affect how

Thankyou for reminding me of my lack of sensitivity Tom, and I happily see that the offending piece has been edited. Please accept my appologies. Just to add a note on durability of expanding polyurethane glues such as Gorrila Glue-my own favourite saltwater fly rods have handles glued up with expanding polyurethane glue, including the reel seats-they are now 12 years old and the veterans of mo

Without trying being contrary, I have found that some of these expanding polyurethane glues to be very usefull and they can work very well, but I would not recomend it as a hobbyists or one off at a time rod builders glue unless he has good experience with the stuff. I was put on to expanding polyurethane glues back in the late 80s by the late Malcome Grey who was the original owner of Greys of

The question here is about the quality of the ceramic and, or the coatings. I have just recently done a bit of research into ceramics to take a look at their properties for heat dissipation, shock strength and hardness. Top of the list for hardness is Silicone carbide. just a hairs breadth behind are Zirconia and silicone nitride, with aluminium oxide just a bit lower. For heat dissipation its si

We used to use specialist grips for tennis raquets and bicycle handle-they can come in quite an array of textures and colors in leather and synthetics.

Hi Bill. Struble are indeed a great company and I always find it a pleasure dealing with them. I did speak to Struble, as its one of their reel seats that is the culprit. Apparently this paricular model, the SDS was designed as a special order for a reel with an oversize foot, which I suspect was a Steelfin Abyss. As a result of the conversation I had with them, they may be making some Delrin in

Hi Spencer. I could not agree more with you and Tom-true to the last word, but....... I,m a tart ! For the most part it seems that good manufacturers do their stuff well. My project falls a little outside the run of the mill as its for a #16-#18wt. As such practicle experience and information is more limmited and so the choice of whats made available for the job is somewhat reduced as to wha

Thanks for clearing that up Larry, thats good to see and I now stand informed. The reel I have does have a foot that conform to the specs given by AFFTA, but the model reel seats I bought, a newish product, manufactured by a highly respected manufacturer does not fit , and its suggested usage would indicate that it should-nor did the vendor, whom also is highly respected know that the model reel

That little bit of information I have posted was only researched just before I wrote the post, so I dont think there is much out there. What puzzles me is that the manufacturers claim to be using these standards, but they nor anyone else cares to explain these standards, and they are not given as information within the product listings. The graphite seats are really great, but unfortunately fo

What are the NAFTA standards for fly reel feet ? This is a side track from my former post that I fear may get berried in the depths, regarding fly reel foot and reel seat fitting. Tom, you wrote in my post that fly reels don't have standardized feet size. I would tend to agree with that, but I read elswhere that NAFTA do have standards, and some of the reel seat manufacturers support this by

Thank you Michael, Kerry and Tom. Kerry-I have a few of the bigger Alps Triangle seats here and like them, and I also tried a 20mm Alps Centra Locks which fits really well but is a big reel seat for a fly rod. I assume that the Alps will be the same fit. In this particular case the 14mm Triangle is a little small in diameter as the blank is just over 15mm, but a 16mm will do the trick. I will pr

I am building a couple of heavy fly rods for an upcoming trip in the Coral Sea. I have been looking for a reel seat with a good firm fit for the foot on my Tibor Gulfstream fly reel. I have tried several, (Pac Bay Chanel Lock, General Pac bay aluminum models, H&H and a few other s of Asian manufacture)but they have a bit of slop side to side or are too small(Alps Window fly seat), and one wa

Hi Ridge, This type of popper fishing has drawn quite a circle of followers fishing for yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna and giant trevally. The type of blank used for this style of fishing would depend on the size of fish you are expecting to encounter and the weight of the lures you would expect to be casting. These rods would definately fit in to a specialist design bracket, and in the heavier e

From what I understand these rods are built on the Ocean Revolution blanks that are designed and manufactured in collaboration with Smith of Japan. They appear to have gained quite a strong following in yellowfin popping circles in the US and elsewhere.

Hi Bob. I used to love the Epoxy Coatings epoxy. I found it gave a really tough finish. the One Coat Hibuild is a bit heavier than Flex Coat. It was I believe a popular finish in Japan, but I don't know if others have taken over since it has been some time since I have used the stuff. From what I remember It didn't yelow too quickly. As far as I know its never been available in smaller quantati

I will be building a #16-18wht fly rod for Yellowfin and Dogtooth tuna. I doubt that I will be fishing within IGFA leader ratings. I used to use the Fuji LNSG-F series in 20 or 25's which had a thick flanged SIC ring that increased the radius at the imediate point of stress thus reducing the pressure and heat build up(in theory), but I can no longer get these. so looking for a replacement.
