I'm going to be building a custom ice rod and know nothing about fishing through ice so I'm wondering about a few things. I think your problem is to much thinner. My guess is the bubbles aren't from air but distillates trying to escape and getting caught in the hardened epoxy. I don't think you would need thinner. If your going to paint a blank I'd suggest using automotive paint for its durability. Testors has paint in 3oz. spray cans or do a net search for automotive paints, there are some in spray cans.

I've used quite a few of the Testors colors with good results, it also dries hard. The spray cans are small so I'll buy 2. This way I'll have enough to spray the blank 2 or 3 times. It allows me to sand out any dings or mistakes. For the clear I mix 4 to 1 automotive urethane with a fast hardner. Its expensive but is a good protection against chips and uv light. I tried Krylon paint and ended up re-painting a rod 3 times, thinking I had a bad can or didn't wait long enough to dry. The last time I left the blank in the sun every afternoon for 3 days to cure and still had problems. I went back to old trusty, Testors enamel. Its good quality paint and if you were to give it a coat of automotive clear urethane you'll never have any problems with it.

This may be late but consider the Alps Tri reel seat mounted down locking. Taper the rear grip to the seat hood starting aprox. 1 to 1.5" below it. Its very comfortable with no seat threads digging into the heel of your hand. With that reel, if wanted, you can cut 5/8" off the threads to shorten it.

Some of us tend to make this harder then we have to by over thinking and/or rushing the project. Take your time, don't put on to much product at one time and you'll be fine.
