I am currently repairing and stripped down an older MHX based rod. I wet sanded a light layer of the entire rod and decided to try the Krylon Fusion based paint with a Krylon clear coat to follow.

My question is has anyone used Krylon Fusion before? If so how did it stand up? And secondly what paint is the preference of choice to most?

I use the krylon .but It has its limitations. You gotta let it dry longer than recommended before doing any top coat.DO NOT use perma gloss with it.I usually use depthane spray to finish as it seems to hold up the best

Thanks Chris! I did learn about having to let it really dry before the top coat with a test spot on the butt end. And I am going to try the depthane spray. I need something that can hold up decently to the harsh Florida sun.

I tried Krylon paint and ended up re-painting a rod 3 times, thinking I had a bad can or didn't wait long enough to dry. The last time I left the blank in the sun every afternoon for 3 days to cure and still had problems. I went back to old trusty, Testors enamel. Its good quality paint and if you were to give it a coat of automotive clear urethane you'll never have any problems with it.

take a look at the DupliColor web site The Auto Match sprey colors are nice A lot in matallics drys fast
They also have several kinds of primers
Then a coat of that 2 K clear in a spray

@Phil - I'm interested in how you paint with the restore too? I like the way Testor paint coats but never thought to use it for an entire blank.

i have painted a lot of blanks i even went way over board and bought a compressor and spray guns. after a lot of trial and error using a bunch of stuff i found that spray max 2k clear is great. so if you spray dulicolor then coat with spray max it will look real nice. only problem is spray max is like 20 bucks a can and once you mix it you have to use it. all 1k or one part clears stink. permagloss/lumiseal are another option some people more talented than myself have had success with.

Don't know how many you can do with one can of the spray max But try doing 4 blanks and then spraying them It may do more ?? But at least ya get some more out of it

i have not tried the DupliColor clears They may work

I've used quite a few of the Testors colors with good results, it also dries hard. The spray cans are small so I'll buy 2. This way I'll have enough to spray the blank 2 or 3 times. It allows me to sand out any dings or mistakes. For the clear I mix 4 to 1 automotive urethane with a fast hardner. Its expensive but is a good protection against chips and uv light. It also gives other options like adding candy concentrate to give the color some depth or alter the color if its not exactly what I'm looking for. Sometimes I'll add pearl powder for a little sparkle. I use an inexpensive air compressor for pumping up car tires, added an additional storage tank to it and bought a cheap spray gun. Something else, especially in the winter, after painting a blank and letting it sit over night, I'll slide it into a piece of 2" pvc pipe then put a hair drier in one end and let it run for 20 or so minutes. That will cure it so you won't get thread marks while wrapping. Auto body shops cook the vehicles somewhere around 150 degrees so the hair drier works evtremely well.
